Because Presbyterians love to leave their mark (literally and spiritually)

Last Sunday, youth from Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin visited Casa Marianella to learn more about their ministry and work for the Austin community. They received a tour of the community, spent time talking with residents, and heard stories about the places many of them call home.

Somebody Prayed For You

Rev. Bobby Musengwa

Transitional General Presbyter

We were carried here — by grace, yes, but also by the faithful, persistent, often unseen prayers of people who loved us and loved God and believed those two loves belonged together.

Which brings us to the question that reflection always asks: Now what?

Now we pray. We pray for those coming behind us — the young people finding their footing, the communities struggling for dignity, the neighbors near and far who are navigating a world in revolution.

What is Pentecost All About?

From the Learn Committee

What’s the big deal about Pentecost? Why do people insist on celebrating it in church ever year?

Pentecost is sometimes called the “birthday of the church” and its story is found in Acts, but it goes back much further than that. In Judaism, Shavuot or “Festival of Weeks”, is observed fifty days after the start of Passover. People from all over had come to Jerusalem to celebrate and remember receiving the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. It’s one of the three pilgrimage festivals, when all Jews in Jesus’ time were expected to travel to the temple in Jerusalem.

After his death and resurrection, Jesus’s disciples gathered in Jerusalem for Shavuot and waited for instructions on what to do next. Enter the Holy Spirit. Suddenly, a wind and fire appeared and danced on their heads. This gave them the ability to speak in different languages and be understood by everyone present, no matter where they were from. That wind and fire at Pentecost reminded readers of Acts of God at Sinai in Exodus.

We are reminded that God is "making all things new" (Revelation 21). Alleluia! The Risen Christ is dwelling with God’s people, and death is no more.

Let us look ahead, with joy and anticipation, for God’s new creation. As the summer season approaches — and, with it, the 227th General Assembly— may we keep walking in faith God’s path together and persevere toward wholeness. A wealth of new resources, events, and programs is before us!
