Presbytery Committees Begin Their Work

Mission Presbytery’s three newest committees have been hard at work over the last few months to fulfill their mission to help the Presbytery to live into its new focus of Connecting, Learning, and Serving. Here’s a peek into their recent endeavors.

CONNECT:

The Mission Presbytery Connect Committee is excited to pursue the following goals as we work to Connect congregations and leaders within our bounds:

  1. Over the next five months contact congregations to survey needs.
  2. Develop a mentor program to help welcome new pastors and their spouses into the presbytery.
  3. Provide opportunities for sharing best practices.

LEARN:

The Learn Committee has met twice and is excited to share some news about a few initiatives. We are planning New Pastor Orientation, where we would create space and activities that enhance collegiality and spiritual formation. Additionally, the committee will be creating and curating Christian education curricula and sharing promising practices in the Presbytery's newsletter.

SERVE:

The Serve Committee is excited to bring back the afternoon of service at one presbytery meeting per year. Before COVID-19 changed our lives, Mission Presbytery had invited commissioners to serve on the Friday afternoon prior to the meeting in the local community where the meeting would be held. This June, we’re bringing back that opportunity in San Antonio! Six local non-profits will host over 100 commissioners for service projects that will remind the community that Mission Presbytery cares deeply! Ask your session to send you as a commissioner, and look for the details when you register!

In Memoriam

Rev. Dr. Dwight West

November 23, 1933-April 30, 2023

With sadness, we report the death of Rev. Dr. Dwight West, a long-time minister member of Mission Presbytery.

Dwight served Grace Presbyterian Church in San Antonio for many years. He retired on August 1, 1999. He’d also served FPC, Hillsboro, TX; FPC, Camden, AR; Northwest PC, Oklahoma City; FPC, Moore, OK; and FPC, Weslaco, TX.

Dwight earned his BA from TCU in 1955; his M.Div from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1958; and his D.Min. from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1980.

Dwight was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Ann (Casey) in 2009. He is survived by his wife Graciela Caballero West. Dwight and Graciela have been faithful worshipers at Covenant PC in San Antonio. Dwight enjoyed the company of retired pastors there every Tuesday morning.

Services for the Rev. Dr. Dwight West will be held on Saturday, May 6, at 3:00 p.m., at Covenant Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. The church is located just off Loop 410, at 211 Roleto Dr. We continue to hold Dwight's family and friends in our prayers.

She's a Published Author at Age 10!

Add 10-year-old 4th grader Emily Tolbert, member of FPC/Georgetown, to the ranks of published authors. Emily, daughter of Patrick and Amanda Tolbert, is the author of Deep in the Jungle, a book about what happens if you find yourself trapped in the jungle. For a project in her Talented and Gifted program at school, Emily studied how a book gets published - with the aim of getting a book that she writes published. She interviewed authors with books released by publishers and some self-published. Deep in the Jungle is available on Amazon in digital or paperback.

A Letter from Melissa Johnson, serving in Zambia

What Does Love Require of Us?

Chasefu Theological College sustainable agriculture students learning to make compost.

Charles and I were both very nervous the first Sunday we were in Lundazi back in April of 2016. Our call was becoming real as we would now be alone in a community where we knew no one. But we were soon entirely overwhelmed by the love and welcome each and every person showed us. We were shown God’s love because everything begins with God’s love. If we ever forget this basic, essential fact of our faith, 1 John 4:7-21 makes it crystal clear.

These verses have been on my heart for the last couple of weeks – or really, it has been the topic within those verses – love – and what that means and what it looks like in our lives.
