Preparing for Flash Flood Threat

From the Mission Presbytery Disaster Preparedness Task Force chair,

Lisa Ringler

A slow-moving Pacific cold front is bringing widespread, heavy rainfall to South-Central Texas, carrying a Level 2 to 3 flood risk for our communities. While much of this rain is beneficial, intense storm pockets could drop 6 to 8 inches of localized rain, causing life-threatening flash flooding.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until Friday at 7:00 PM for most of South-Central Texas. Please review and share the safety details below with your congregations:

Timing & What to Expect

  • Wednesday Night – Friday: Scattered storms develop in western areas and move up the I-35 corridor. Thursday evening carries the highest risk for severe, heavy storm redevelopment. The heaviest rainfall for the San Antonio/Austin area is noon Thursday through noon Friday with rainfall exceeding 2 to 3 inches per hour at times.
  • Friday – Sunday: Heavy rain moves into the eastern areas of our Presbytery on Friday, reaching the valley and gulf regions on Saturday where it is likely to lighten in intensity. Heavy lightning and isolated downpours will persist in Austin and San Antonio through early Sunday.
  • River Flooding: Minor to moderate flooding is expected in the Guadalupe (upper & lower regions), Llano, San Antonio, Frio, Medina, and Nueces river basins. Keep a close eye if you live near those areas.

Notable Severe Weather Threats

  • West of I-35: Level 2 out of 5 risk for large hail, damaging straight-line winds up to 80mph, and isolated tornadoes.
  • I-35 and East: Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe storms, with intense pockets capable of dumping 2 to 4 inches of rain per hour.

Please stay weather-aware, monitor local road conditions, avoid flooded areas, and check on vulnerable neighbors. For real-time radar and timing graphics, follow @NWSSanAntonio on X or Facebook.

We are praying deeply for everyone's safety and that damage to homes and churches is minimal. Please know that your Disaster Preparedness team is here beside you, ready to help you find resources and support you through what comes next. You do not have to face this alone—please reach out to us for anything you need.

Put ten kindergarten kids in one room with ten balloons. Nine balloons are white. One is red. How many kids run for the red one? Almost all of them. Within a minute, someone is crying. Someone is pulling. Someone is a little too proud of winning. Nothing was wrong with the white balloons.

As we enter October, we celebrate the ordination anniversaries of all the Teaching Elders in our midst who were ordained in October. We send special greetings to William Woods, celebrating 60 years; Sally Anderson, celebrating 40 years; and Patrick Dennis, celebrating 20 years!
