Iowa State Fair Hymn Sing

Greetings, Regional Church,

As you may know, our Upper Midwest Region has hosted the Old Fashioned Hymn Sing at the Iowa State Fair for over two decades. It has been a fulfilling mission and an important ministry in exposing persons in Iowa to our Church. The late Rev. JoAnn Thomas coordinated the Old Fashioned Hymn Sing for several years. Don Hiscox, retired pastor living in Grimes who provided administrative responsibility for the hymn sing for many years, has re-assumed responsibility for coordinating this ministry.

Your help is urgently needed. We cannot find details about those who volunteered their time and skills to make the hymn sing a reality. We need to rebuild our list of people willing to serve as song leaders and people willing to serve as accompanists for the hymn sings. In total, we need of 22 song leaders and 22 accompanists. If you or others in the congregation in which you participate can volunteer your time, talents, and energies to this ministry, please contact Don Hiscox at your earliest convenience. He can be reached at don.b.hiscox@gmail.com or 515-865-1770.

In addition to the twice daily hymn sings in The Old Church, the ministry expanded last year to include a Children’s Time on the lawn outside the church building, introducing children to a Bible story through storytelling, crafts and song.  Gail Aurand, co-pastor with the Elkhart congregation, has assumed responsibility for coordinating the children’s ministry.

Realizing the majority of the children walking by The Old Church have never been introduced to the Bible or Jesus, we are needing eleven (11) congregations to provide volunteers and funding for each day's lesson and craft, which Gail will coordinate. If you can help with this ministry please contact Gail Aurand at gailaurand@gmail.com or 660-785-0349.

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to provide. The Iowa State Fair is only about five months away (August 11-21, 2022)!

Several times a year, congregations receive a special offering to support the ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). These gifts are given above and beyond the regular core support of Disciples Mission Fund.

The Easter Offering, received by most congregations on April 10 & 17, 2022, supports several of the general ministries of the Christian Church. Your gift supports college students in leadership development programs, global mission partners, health and social service ministries, the formation of new congregations, support for pastors and chaplains, and so much more.

We Want to Hear about Your Ministry
Is your church doing something new or creative? Are you finding a unique way to serve a need in your community? We want to hear about it and share your story with the rest of the church! Our goal is to share at least one new idea from a congregation each time we publish this newsletter.

Please send your story to Tiff Williams, Associate Regional Minister, and she will get in contact with you about your ministry. Sharing your church's story could spark a new idea in a sister congregation. As Disciples Together, we will be stronger in our ministry to the world when we share what God is doing through us in our communities.
