Ministry Resources and Ideas for Church Leaders

Bed Ministry Continues to Get Attention

All children should have a safe place to sleep. That's the commitment of several churches around the region who have started a Bed Ministry in their local communities. The ministry began in this region with First Christian Church of Newton. Families in need are identified through the school system or a social worker. Then a new bed is constructed for the child. FCC Newton displayed information about the project at an All Congregational Gathering a few years ago. They shared how they constructed the beds in the basement of their church and sought out local partners to help provide mattresses and bedding.

At that gathering, members of FCC Keokuk saw the display and took the idea back to their church's mission team. Since then, FCC Burlington and FCC Fort Madison have gotten involved. Each congregation has found a way to construct and give away beds to needy children in their communities.

Recently, an article about the bed ministry appeared in the Fort Madison Daily Democrat. The article quotes Pastor Leslie Dalstra in Fort Madison about why they do this ministry: “We create opportunities for people to connect with their community in a benevolent way,” she said. “Not because we want you to come to church on Sunday – that would be great – but we don’t have an ulterior motive. We just do it because as Christians we feel that it is our call to invite people to help one another out.”

Regional Youth Ministry Reading Group

Beginning in January, a group of youth workers from around the region will be gathering virtually to learn together. We will be reading Andrew Root's "The End of Youth Ministry?" A monthly meeting time will be established once the group is formed. We will read 1-2 chapters a month and finish by the end of the school year. Email Tiff Williams to be included in the group and receive the Zoom link.

Who is a youth worker? Anyone, layperson or pastor, who works regularly with young people. (Sunday school, youth group, Christian Education chair, etc.) Please sign up by January 6th to be included in the group.

Email Tiff Williams to be included in the study.

Green Chalice, a Disciples of Christ ministry focusing on environmental issues, will be offering an online conversation on January 12th at 7:00 pm EST. Anyone who is interested in learning more about Green Chalice, or getting more deeply involved, is invited to attend.

Join other Green Chalice congregations and leaders for a time of learning, listening, and inspiration.

We Want to Hear about Your Ministry

Is your church doing something new or creative? Are you finding a unique way to serve a need in your community? We want to hear about it and share your story with the rest of the church! Our goal is to share at least one new idea from a congregation each time we publish this newsletter.

Please send your story to Tiff Williams, Associate Regional Minister, and she will get in contact with you about your ministry. Sharing your church's story could spark a new idea in a sister congregation. As Disciples Together, we will be stronger in our ministry to the world when we share what God is doing through us in our communities.
