Ministry Resources and Ideas for Church Leaders

The Rev. Michael Schloff Recognition Award - Connie Ryan

This year's recipient is our own Connie Ryan, the Executive Director of Interfaith Alliance of Iowa. Connie has been in this position for more than 20 years, and in that time has stood in the public square, the Iowa legislature, churches, mosques, synagogues, and more to unify people of conscience and has been an advocate for the progressive voice in Iowa. Connie is committed to promoting and upholding the rights of the queer community. She speaks up and leads others to advocate for justice for those whose sexual orientation, gender identity, self-expression, and belovedness are threatened.

The recognition award is named for Rev. Michael Schloff, an openly gay Disciples clergyman who died of AIDS related pneumonia in the fall of 2018. He was an original member of the former Alliance Coordinating Committee (now AllianceQ). This recognition is given to individuals or groups who demonstrate the powerful Christian commitment to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Affirming Christians and to all persons within or without the church.

Elders Together

Elder’s Together is a Regional ministry designed to support congregational elders and foster friendships across the congregations in the Upper Midwest. Elder’s Together was first offered in 2024. Gratitude and appreciation for learning together were responses to the experiences of 50 elders from across the Region last year.

Elders Together will be postponed until early 2026. Watch future newsletters for more information.

This is a peaceful gathering. The moderators reserve the right to remove anyone who is deemed disruptive to the peaceful gathering.

Climate Ambassador Training

September is the Season of Creation and Disciples are partnering with Blessed Tomorrow and 8 other denominations to offer a FREE live, virtual Christian Climate Training on September 27, 2025 from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm ET / 8:30 - 11:30 am PT. It will include breakouts by denomination. The majority of Americans are concerned about climate change. But, they think only half of those around them feel the same way. As a person of faith, you can help others see they’re not alone in their concern and invite them to take action. The Christian Climate Training equips you with the knowledge, hands-on experience, and resources to speak and take action on climate change from a Christian faith perspective in your home, neighborhood, church, community, with policymakers, and beyond. DMF Day

September 12, 2025

Disciples Mission Fund makes it possible for us to do more together than we can alone. Because of DMF, lives are transformed and ministry happens across the church and around the world. Congregations are stronger when they participate in Disciples Mission Fund because they are part of something larger than themselves – DMF makes it possible for Disciples to do ministry in places far beyond their own community. Congregations benefit from DMF in tangible ways as well: support from their regional minister through the search and call process, sending kids to church camp, ministry interns from Disciples seminaries, global mission partners, and so much more. For more information, including events.

Disciples Advocate Platform

Disciples Home Missions (DHM) is relaunching Disciples Advocate as a distribution channel and a connection space that empowers DHM to bring a coordinated approach to promoting greater justice and mercy in the world and is intended for congregations, Regions, clergy and laypeople, General Ministries, and our partners as we work on the frontlines of justice and serve God in new and exciting ways. For more information.

"Is a Migrant My Neighbor?"

LTS Lay School, Sept 24, 5:30p Central

Currently, many social and political tensions arise around the treatment of non-citizens in the United States. In this interactive Zoom session with Dr. Jean Soto, we will inquire into the Old Testament theme of “migrant” or “stranger” and the meaning of “neighbor” in the New Testament. Register here.

We Want to Hear about Your Ministry!

Is your church doing something new or creative? Are you finding a unique way to serve a need in your community? We want to hear about it and share your story with the rest of the church! Our goal is to share at least one new idea from a congregation each time we publish this newsletter.

Please send your story to Joshua Patty, Regional Minister, and he will get in contact with you about your ministry. Sharing your church's story could spark a new idea in another congregation. As Disciples Together, we will be stronger in our ministry to the world when we share what God is doing through us in our communities.
