August 5, 2014

This is is the third of a monthly email newsletter sent to all participants in Mission West.   This newsletter will arrive on the first Tuesday of each month.  For those that would like paper copies please call the office at 806.358.9590 and we will mail you a paper version.

One of our goals in Mission West is to help connect churches to one another.  Rather than a model of ministry as a hub of a wheel, Mission West  hopes to work as an interconnected web.  One way to accomplish this goal is by sharing our stories and experiences in ministry.  If you have a ministry that you would like highlighted, please send it to the office, no later than the 25th of each month to be shared in following issues.

The formation of a communications team is coming together but we are lacking someone who is tech savvy to help diversify the team.  Are you or someone you know tech savvy and willing to help Mission West formulate it's communications plan?  Please submit nominations to Karakay at your earliest opportunity.

Please enjoy this month's newsletter.
Mission West Update
The Mission West Common Mission Board met on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. We are pleased with the reports from our camps this summer and look forward to next year. There will be a Mission West Youth Leader meeting on August 23, 2014 in Lubbock at Westmont Christian Church. Contact Karakay for more information.

As a Board, we continue to fine tune operational documents such as the Mission West By-Laws. It is great seeing the experience and expertise of the three areas coming together. We are investigating what will be the best accounting practices and policies for our organization and were very pleased with our first financial report.

The one thing we are all most excited about is the formation of the Mission West Elder Team. Charlotte has done a great amount of research and has put together a protocol that will ensure the program's initial launch will be prayer-filled and beneficial to our congregations. If your congregation has any suggestions of who would make a wonderful MW Elder please let Charlotte know. We hope to begin the Elder program by the end of September.

How exciting it is to be on the ground floor of such an exciting new ministry!
Respectfully submitted, Rev. Laurie Lewis
MW Elders Program
Mission West is seeking gifted clergy and lay leaders for their new Mission West Elders Ministry.

Mission West Elders will be a group of volunteers within Mission West who provide contact and care on behalf of Mission West for an assigned group of ministers and churches serving in a particular geographic cluster or who are involved in a distinctive ministry. The ministry is designed to be primarily as a resource to ministers within Mission West, but Mission West Elders over time also develop relationships with the congregations/institutions those ministers serve and often develop supporting relationships to the leaders of those congregations/institutions as well.

This ministry will benefit the pastors and congregations of Mission West by:
  • Extending the reach of the Mission West Staff
  • Providing a presence of the Mission West in local congregations and in ministers' lives
  • Extending pastoral care to more persons than the Mission West staff could provide

We are seeking especially:
  • Gifted ministers or lay elders who have the ability to be present on behalf of the Mission West
  • Persons living in or near the geographic cluster of the congregations being served
  • Persons who can develop the trust of the pastors to whom they are assigned
  • Persons with listening skills

Please share names of individuals who you feel may be qualified to serve in this volunteer ministry with Rev. Charlotte Hoppe, Lead Minister.  If you would like to know more about this new ministry, please contact Charlotte, as well.  The Lead Minister will speak with any recommended individuals or interested volunteers.  Final decision about who will be called as Mission West Elders will be made by the Common Mission Board, based on  recommendations by the Mission West Lead Minister.  Training and support for this ministry will also be the responsibility of the Lead Minister.
