Mission Moment: Herberth Galan
Congratulations to San Antonio Lighthouse Machine Operator Herberth Galan for being recognized as a nominee for the 2021 Peter J. Salmon Award at the National Industries for the Blind (NIB) National Symposium held in Washington, D.C. last month.

This award honors the accomplishments of blind employees at NIB associated agencies who excel in their positions.

In his 15 years at the Lighthouse, Herberth has sewn chin straps for the Marines, as well as combat jackets and extreme weather pants for the Army. Currently, he cuts material for military chin straps.

“I like to work at the Lighthouse because we’re a good team and have good communication,” Herberth said.  “The Lighthouse has given me an opportunity to work and I like that I can always learn more.”
Join our Golf Tournament:
"Fore" the Blind Charity Scramble
We’re thrilled to announce our 14th Annual “Fore” the Blind Charity Scramble will take place at Canyon Spring Golf Club on Nov. 16, 2022.

Join us for a one-of-a-kind golf tournament where foursomes are paired with one of the world’s best blind golfers.

Proceeds from the event will benefit programs at the Lighthouse that increase the independence of individuals who are blind and vision impaired.

Last year, the Lighthouse provided more than 23,000 services to roughly 7,000 San Antonians.

You can help us empower even more people who are blind and vision impaired by supporting our event.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day
In anticipation of Global Accessibility Awareness Day on May 19, we’re sharing tips on how you can make your website more accessible for the 1 billion people with disabilities and impairments.

According to WebAIM Million Report, 98.1% of website home pages have at least one Web Content Accessibility Guideline 2.0 failure, with an average of 60.9 errors per home page.

So how can you make your website more accessible?

  1. Include proper alt text for images.
  2. Give your links unique and descriptive names.
  3. Use headings correctly to organize the structure of your content.
  4. Use a color contrast analyzer to optimize your content for individuals with vision disabilities like color-blindness and low-vision impairments.
  5. Forms should have a well-positioned, descriptive label.
Meet the Board: Paula Miles

Why do you serve on the San Antonio Lighthouse Board?

I came because I was intensely curious about the people, the technology and the adapted machinery. I stayed when I came to understand the Lighthouse mission and observed its impact. I felt called to play a part in all of it.
