Texas Primaries March 2026
Tips from Jeanne Spreier, Wilshire member & Volunteer Deputy Registrar
Feb 17: First day of early voting
March 3: Primary voting day
In Dallas, Tarrant and Collin counties, on election day (March 3), you will be able to vote ONLY in your precinct. The "voting centers" will be shut down on election day. Collin County will continue with "hand marked" (fill in the bubble) ballots, which take longer to complete than the touch pad ballots used in the past. If you are in Collin County, allow extra time for that.
Texans do not register by party. You declare at the poll what party's ballot (Democrat or Republican) you want for the election. You do not need to request the same party ballot as in past years. However, if there is a runoff to primaries, you may vote only in the runoff of the party you voted in this year. (IE if you voted in a GOP primary in 2026, you will not be able to vote in a Dem primary runoff.) In the general election in November, you may vote for whoever you like, regardless of party.
If you request a mail-in ballot, follow the directions meticulously. Mail-in ballots have an especially high rate of rejection. In some Texas counties, it's up to 25% of mail-in ballots are rejected. More information here.
Bottom line: Vote early and in person, if you can. If you are voting by mail, vote the day you get your ballot in the mail. If possible, drive your mail-in ballot to your county election office. If you cannot do that, put your ballot in a mailbox at a post office, not in your home's mailbox.
I'm happy to answer any questions you have.
