Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Class
Midweek | 6:15–7:30 PM | Kersey Chapel
Begins August 12 for 6 weeks


TBRI is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI is connection.


Who is it for, and who should use it? TBRI is designed to meet the complex needs of children who have experienced adversity, early harm, toxic stress and/or trauma. Because of their histories, it is often difficult for these children to trust the loving adults in their lives, which often results in perplexing behaviors. TBRI offers practical tools for parents, caregivers, teachers or anyone who works with children to see the “whole child” in their care and help that child reach their highest potential.

When people think of missions, they often think of “going out,” not “bringing in”. However, bringing people into the love of Christ through some of our in-house missions programs is essential to the Mt. Horeb Missions Ministry.

Many children, youth and families right here in Lexington face difficult circumstances shaped by financial hardship, family instability, the need for foster care and other challenges beyond their control. As followers of Christ, we are called to love our neighbors, walk alongside those in need and reflect God's hope through meaningful relationships.

At Mt. Horeb, we have three ministries that create opportunities for life-changing mentoring relationships. 10:10 Bridge is an after-school program serving elementary-aged children. Heritage Builders serves youth and young adults who are currently in or have aged out of the foster care system and often lack a trusted adult to provide guidance and support. Connections Lexington Community journeys alongside adults and families as they move from material poverty toward financial stability and holistic transformation.

Over the next couple of months, we are sharing stories from mentors and mentees in these three programs whose lives have been transformed by either mentoring or being mentored. As you read these stories, we ask that you pray for the participants, mentors and their families in these three ministries. By showing up, encouraging and extending compassion, God brings hope, healing and lasting change—one relationship at a time.

What brought you to CLC? 

"Janis did a mission highlight on Connections during the Sunday service and asked for volunteers. I was newly retired and looking for a place to serve. Immediately, I felt the tug to get involved and emailed Janis that day after church to sign up."


Why did you commit to CLC?  

"It just felt like I was supposed to do it. Growing up, I saw abuse and dysfunction in my family. I could easily have made poor choices to avoid the conflict and fear at home had it not been for God's grace, my mother's strength and my involvement in church. I've also been blessed with positive role models, family and friends who have encouraged me and supported me in achieving my goals and making my way.

Through hard work and determination, I've been given opportunities and avenues that have contributed to my financial security. I felt that my experiences, both good and bad, would enable me to be a resource to someone else. I also thought about my adult children and the times they've needed help. My husband and I have helped them through some difficult situations, and I wondered what would have happened if they had not had our support. Connections would allow me to offer support to others."

How has your life been impacted by CLC?  

"My family has grown. My participants and co-mentor have a personal connection, and even though they have both graduated, we continue to attend Connections to support and check in with each other. I've also learned a lot! Through the training and ongoing programs, I've gained new nuggets of insight about finances, fitness and what's available in our community. I've also learned a lot about myself.

Connections has allowed me to experience Jesus in a whole new way. My compassion and tolerance for people outside of my bubble has grown. I see all people in a new light. Prior to going through the training and working with our participants, I didn't understand what it was like for people living off government assistance. Except for special circumstances, I felt being in that situation could have been avoided with hard work and determination. I worked hard and didn't quit, so I developed the mindset of, 'If I can do it, they can do it.' And, 'After all, there are plenty of jobs out there if you want to work.'

However, I got a big dose of reality after hearing about the obstacles and limitations that some people experience. I heard their stories, their fears and their frustrations. I relived some of my own memories through them. It was no longer that person; it was the person sitting across from me. I saw them not as a stranger would, but as Jesus sees them."

What do you love most about CLC?


"You become family. Not only do you build a relationship with your participant, but you also form connections with everyone in the group. Everyone is assured a safe place to share and be honest with their feelings, so people let you inside their journey. You become involved in their goals and struggles and successes. You come alongside your participants, not to tell them what they have to do, but to listen, talk and share opinions and ideas. It's so beautiful to celebrate a participant, especially your own, when he or she achieves a goal that was never thought possible. Better yet, to be at the graduation!"

What have you learned through this program? 

"I've learned that it's not just getting a job or working hard that brings about financial security. Not everyone is educated on how to budget or manage a checking account. Not everyone is given, or knows how to take advantage of, the opportunities that are out there. I assumed that everybody would know about a savings account and that you don't spend rent money on something extra. But what I learned was that not everyone is given the chance to learn these important life skills.

Most importantly, I have learned how to have more compassion for people. I don't know what is going on in someone's life, so I should be slow to view their situation through my own lens. I've learned that I have a lot left to learn!"

Concessions of Hope provides meals at Hope Plaza in Columbia (2018B Main Street) for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. A team from Mt. Horeb participates in this ministry by preparing and distributing meals to an average of 150 individuals on the last Saturday of every month. This ministry provides not just food for the body but also encouragement and nourishment for the soul.

CAR CARE

Our Car Care Ministry exists to serve and support families in our community by meeting a practical, everyday need. We understand that maintaining a vehicle can be both costly and overwhelming, especially when you’re carrying the responsibilities of work, home and family on your own.

Through this ministry, we offer free oil changes as a simple but meaningful way to ease that burden. More than just car maintenance, this is an opportunity to show care, provide encouragement and remind single moms that they are seen, valued and not alone.

It takes a team to make this ministry possible.

We are looking for volunteers with experience in changing oil and basic car maintenance to serve on our auto care team. We also need a warm and welcoming hospitality team to prepare and serve snacks, creating a comfortable and inviting environment. In addition, volunteers are needed to lead simple craft activities for moms and their children to enjoy while they wait.

Our goal is to create more than just a service appointment—we want to provide a space of rest, connection and care. While we care for their vehicles, we also seek to care for their hearts—offering prayer, conversation and encouragement as desired. It’s a small act of service with a big purpose: helping keep families safe on the road while sharing the love of Christ in a tangible way.

The Mt. Horeb Golf Classic is full, but there is still room to support the Backpack Ministry through sponsorship!

You do not have to be a player to support the Backpack Ministry through this tournament. In addition to donations, we are offering sponsorship levels of all kinds, including Cart Sponsorships, which are perfect for families or small groups.

For the 2025-2026 school year, the Backpack Ministry:

• Sponsored 10 schools with backpacks every weekend
• Four of the 10 schools are Title I schools, meaning 40% or more of the children are on free and reduced lunch
• 500 children received a backpack every Friday
• The total cost was $117,000, at $6.50 per backpack of food
• For the Summer Backpack Program, which collects and distributes boxes of food to families over the summer, we gave away 2,600 pounds of food
• The 2025 tournament raised $28,000, which allowed us to add 75 more children to the program

Red Bird Mission Trip Overview


Red Bird Mission and Clinic has been providing ministries in the Appalachian Mountains since 1921. Red Bird serves an isolated, rural, distressed area, handicapped by chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and obstacles due to the rugged mountain terrain. Red Bird Mission and Clinic strives to meet the needs of their community through education, health and wellness, community outreach, economic opportunity, and community housing improvement.

Mt. Horeb will be coming alongside Red Bird Mission in a variety of ways, the most prominent being by serving in their work camp, which will include light to heavy construction. We will also be helping in the community thrift store and serving in the Senior Center.
