Liberia Mission Trip Testimony by Melissa Luckett Liberia Mission Trip | January 2026
In 2023, I was given my first opportunity to join a mission team traveling to Liberia. I was incredibly excited to join a group that would provide healthcare, help build homes and assist teachers in educating students in a small village called Boway. As a nurse practitioner in a women’s health clinic, I knew my professional skills were limited to women’s health and obstetrics. Still, I went with a willing heart, trusting that the Lord would use me however He saw fit. When we arrived in Boway, I was immediately overwhelmed by the hospitality, the kindness and the genuine love shown to us by people who had never met us before.
I quickly realized something unexpected: what I had to offer was not nearly as great as what I was receiving. In every encounter, I saw the goodness of God. I fell in love with the children who simply longed for relationships and connections with people who cared about them. Their joy, faith and love changed my heart. When I returned home, I found myself counting down the days until I could go back.
Then, in February of 2026, the opportunity came. This trip felt very different. This time, I would be leaving behind three children who were old enough to notice my absence and ask why I wasn’t home. Friends and colleagues often questioned my decision. “Why go now when your kids are so young?”
Each time I answered the same way: I want my children to choose to love Jesus first, and I want them to see that faith requires obedience and sacrifice.
This trip was also different because our team planned to attend the Global Methodist Conference in Liberia. Almost immediately after arriving, I began to feel out of place. I wasn’t a pastor, teacher, or biblical scholar. At that point, I started to question everything: Why had I left my family? What was my role here? Did I even belong on this team?
In a very emotional moment, I confided in Janis Albergotti and shared how inadequate I felt. She listened and then gently said something that shifted my entire perspective: “Do not underestimate the power of your presence.” By leaving my family, traveling across the world and simply showing up, I was doing my part to show the love of Christ. In that moment, I was reminded: God does not call us to be the most qualified person in the room. He simply calls us to be willing.
So I decided that whether I had everything to offer or nothing at all, I would choose to be present. I could pray for the people I met. I could pray for the Global Methodist Church of Liberia. I could listen, encourage and love the people God placed in front of me. My mission would be to show up with an open heart and willingness to love the people around me.
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” - Isaiah 6:8
I am so incredibly thankful that He has sent me twice.

Celebration for God’s Work in Boway, Liberia
In January, a Mt. Horeb team visited our mission partner, Rev. Dr. Jerry Kulah. Dr. Kulah serves as the Conference Superintendent for the Grain Coast Annual Conference of the Global Methodist Church in Liberia. The conference includes nearly 30,000 members and continues to grow through Dr. Kulah’s passion for evangelism and church planting.
When we first met Dr. Kulah, he invited Mt. Horeb to partner with him in developing his home village, Boway. Boway is a small, rural village of approximately 1,200 people. For many years, the community had no piped water, no electricity and very limited social and economic development resources. Most families rely on subsistence farming, and inconsistent crop yields have often resulted in food insecurity.
As a native of Boway, Dr. Kulah felt a deep calling to serve and strengthen his home village through sustainable community development initiatives. Through a faithful partnership with Mt. Horeb over the past five years, Boway is moving from an impoverished village toward becoming a sustainable and thriving town.
We invite you to join us in prayer as we celebrate what God has done through this partnership since 2021. These initiatives are transforming lives and community infrastructure, all in Jesus’ name. Together, our partnership has made the following possible:
- Construction of 24 new homes for widows and widowers, each equipped with indoor flushing toilets
- Installation of indoor bathrooms in 25 existing homes
- Solar lighting throughout the village, improving safety and allowing children and families to gather after dark
- Construction of two bridges connecting nearby villages and contributing to economic growth
- A twelve‑bedroom guest house for youth gatherings, pastoral retreats and mission teams
- Launch of entrepreneurial initiatives, including beekeeping and pineapple farming
- Scholarships for 250 elementary school children
- Training for teachers and pastors
- Medical services for residents of Boway and 11 surrounding villages
- Approximately $150,000 in new medical equipment for the Boway clinic through a partnership with Project C.U.R.E.
- Construction of a town hall in the neighboring village of Schenkpoi, named the “Jeff and Lynn Kersey Town Hall”
-
Ongoing construction of the Mt. Horeb Church Town Hall & Skilled Training Center in Boway, along with several duplex housing units and an expansion of the medical clinic
We give thanks for God’s faithfulness and for the lives being impacted through this partnership. May we continue to prayerfully support and celebrate the work He is doing in Boway and throughout Liberia.

The Liberia trip was a two‑fold journey:
- Visiting the town of Boway
- Attending the first Global Methodist Church (GMC) Grain Coast Annual Conference in Ganta, Liberia
Mt. Horeb partners with the Grain Coast Conference by providing transitional financial support as hundreds of Liberian churches faithfully transition from the United Methodist Church to the GMC.
More than 800 people attended the conference, and the celebration of this historic movement from UMC to GMC was a powerful and joy‑filled occasion. Hundreds of participants filled the streets, chanting “Go Global” during a parade that kicked off the opening ceremony of the first Grain Coast Annual Conference—an unforgettable testimony to God’s work in Liberia!
