Crafting for Christ

We would like to take a moment and recognize a very special ministry within Missions that may be rarely seen, but has served our local community and partners abroad in tremendous, tangible ways - the Crafters for Christ Ministry! Last year alone, the Crafters for Christ completed the following for these outreach events:

Samoa Mission Trip: 54 pairs of shorts for boys; 400 Samoa bags, 202 eyeglasses cases

India and Nepal Mission Trip: 235 reusable sanitary pads (pictured above with a Nepali girl)

Mt. Horeb Worship: 1 GMC banner, All Saints Sunday flag

VBS: 5 new costumes for Bible Stories

Walk to Emmaeus: 61 painted wooden crosses

Congregational Care: 23 prayer shawls and 1 quilt

Prism Children's Hospital: 1106 surgical caps: for pre-op children

Lexington Extended Care/ NHC/ Lakeside Senior Living/ Oakleaf Nursing Home/ Millennium Rehab: 393 Easter candy hats, 323 wheelchair bags, 635 hand rolls (wheelchair bags pictured below)

Lexington Extended Care: 200 angels, twin comforter and sham, quilted lap blanket, 2 crocheted lap blankets

Crafting for Christ is more than a craft-making group. They are a group of individuals dedicated to caring for one another and crafting with intention. Each craft is created with a missional mindset to serve the needs of those near and far through their handiwork in the name of Jesus.

You do not need to sew to craft for Christ. If you can knit, crochet or use scissors, they can use you! Crafters for Christ meets on Wednesdays from 10 AM – 12 PM. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Cyndi McDaniel at (803) 237-9898.

Oasis Conference Mission Trip

We currently have a missions team serving in an undisclosed African country, where persecution of Christians is great. This country is part of the GMC Oasis Conference. The Oasis Conference is a region of Africa where Christians experience great persecution, including potential job loss, threats to housing, access to water, relationship loss and disengagement and regular threats of physical danger and possibly death.

The primary purpose of this trip is to encourage and pray with the church as they face intense persecution. We welcome you to pray for this team and the "underground" house churches, their pastors and the pastors' families. Please ask the Lord to:

Encourage the people who know what trials and tribulations they are up against.

Strengthen their hearts and minds under this intense persecution with the hope of the Lord as thier strength.

Shower them in joy as they witness the gospel spread and God at work.

Build their faith as many of the new believers are vulnerable children, youth and young adults who have converted to Christianity.

Fill their minds with wisdom as they stand firm amid a counterculture.

During the school year, our congregation partners with local schools to help feed families who struggle with food insecurity. Through the Mt. Horeb Backpack Ministry, children receive a backpack of child-friendly, shelf-stable food to take home over the weekend. During the summer, when children are not in school, we support these families through our Summer Food Drive, where these families receive approximately 50 pounds of shelf-stable food to fill their pantry.

The Backpack Ministry currently serves children from 10 different schools in Lexington School District One. You can help us feed these children over the summer by purchasing these foods:

Macaroni and Cheese

Chef Boyardee

Hamburger Helper/Tuna Helper

Canned Meats (Chicken or Tuna)

Instant Potatoes (Mashed, Au Gratin, or Scalloped)

Pasta

We will be collecting these items on Sunday, May 24 and 31 at the Missions Center, (outside the Auditorium) and weekdays at the Missions Ministry Office (brick house behind the church).

Chicago Mission Trip Overview

New Life Centers (NLC) connects inner-city Chicago youth and their families to Christ and community through life-on-life relationships. Through mentoring, community care, education, sports, peacekeeping and violence prevention, NLC comes alongside people in under-resourced communities to bring hope and foster long-term transformation.

Through a partnership with Mt. Horeb, New Life Centers expanded its food distribution (which feeds over 2,000 people per week), migrant crisis shelter (which shelters 240 people), mentoring and family support initiatives. While in Chicago, you will get to witness Mt. Horeb’s partnership with NLC and participate in some of their ministries, including the food bank, community outreach programs and community events.

Cost: $500

Red Bird Mission Trip Overview

Red Bird Mission and Clinic have been providing ministries in the Appalachian Mountains since 1921. Red Bird serves an isolated rural, distressed area, handicapped by chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing and obstacles due to the rugged mountain terrain. Red Bird Mission and Clinic strive to meet the needs of their community through education, health and wellness, community outreach, economic opportunity and community housing improvement.

Mt. Horeb will be coming alongside Red Bird Mission in a variety of ways, the most prominent by serving in their work camp, which will include light to heavy construction. We will also be helping in the community thrift store and serving in the Senior Center.
