Governor Reeves Cuts Ribbon for RESTORE-funded Hanger
Governor Tate Reeves and other dignitaries cut the ribbon for a new hanger at Stennis International Airport on January 26. This project was announced as part of MDEQ's RESTORE Act plan in 2015 and received $1.85 million in RESTORE Act funding to support its construction. The project's 24,000 square foot hangar facility adjacent to the airport terminal helped Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission secure a lease with its largest tenant, Tyonek Services Group.

Governor Reeves Announcement of $25 Million in Site Development Includes Three RESTORE Act Projects
Governor Tate Reeves announced on February 11 that the state is investing nearly $25 million in site development projects. Site development grant funds made available through the Mississippi Development Authority, Appalachian Regional Commission, and the RESTORE Act are assisting local economic development entities to spur economic growth by attracting new industry to competitive, shovel-ready sites.
RESTORE Act funding in the amount of $8.92 million assisting three projects with site development needs and administered by MDEQ, are:
· Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport – $4.18 million for site development work at a 241-acre economic development site at the airport.
· Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission – $2.54 millions for engineering/design and site development work at Site #13 at Stennis International Airport.
· Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission – $2.2 million for site development at Hancock County Tech Park at Stennis International Airport.

Restoration MIP and MSEP Available for Review and Comments
At the 2021 MDEQ Restoration Summit, Governor Reeves announced new restoration projects for the State of Mississippi designed to help restore and protect the environment and economy of the state following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The projects announced at the Restoration Summit are included in two plans released in January for public review and comment:

Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group Solicits Project Ideas
The Mississippi Trustee Implementation Group (MS TIG) is beginning the process of restoration planning for its Restoration Plan 4 and is soliciting natural resource restoration project ideas. This request is open for 30 days ending March 7, 2022.
Restoration types in Restoration Plan 4 may include:
· Wetlands, Coastal, and Nearshore Habitats
· Nutrient Reduction
· Provide and Enhance Recreational Opportunities

EPA Adds New Hazardous Air Pollutant
For the first time since the original hazardous air pollutant (HAP) list was finalized by Congress in the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, EPA has added a HAP to the list through the petition and rulemaking process. The new HAP, 1-bromopropane (1-BP), also known as n-propyl bromide (nPB), is “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” per the National Toxicology Program Report on Carcinogens. Read More

Triennial Review Modifications to Mississippi’s Water Quality Standards Approved by EPA
Federal law requires all states to develop, review, revise, and adopt water quality standards (WQS), as needed, at least every three years through a process known as the triennial review. WQS standards must include three components: (1) the designated uses for the state’s waterbodies, (2) the water quality criteria (narrative or numeric) necessary to protect those uses, and (3) antidegradation provisions to protect water quality. In accordance with the requirements of 40 CFR §131.20(a), MDEQ has completed Mississippi’s Triennial Review of WQS. Read More

Waste Pesticide Disposal Event in Greenwood
A waste pesticide collection event and electronic waste day will be held on Tuesday, March 1 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Leflore County Civic Center located at 200 Highway 7 North in Greenwood. These programs are a free service to Mississippi farmers and residents who live in the area, and MDEQ is a sponsor of the event.
While the focus of this event is primarily the collection of agricultural waste pesticides, waste tires will be accepted in limited numbers. In addition, the Greenwood Leflore Recycling Center will be on site to collect old electronics. Call a county extension office for more information. Mississippi State University Extension has produced this YouTube video with information about how to participate in these events.

Spring Grant Deadlines Approaching for Solid Waste Assistance Grants
MDEQ is announcing the availability of the agency’s Local Government Competitive Solid Waste Assistance Grants (SWAG), and the deadline to submit a grant application is 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2022. The competitive SWAG grants are open to municipalities, counties, regional solid waste management authorities, solid waste districts and other local government entities. In addition, county governments were provided with a notice from MDEQ in November 2021 of the availability of the noncompetitive allocated SWAG funds. These noncompetitive grants are allocated annually to county governments based on the county's state aid road mileage formula. County governments may submit an application for these noncompetitive grant awards at any time up until April 30, 2022.
Both the competitive and allocated SWAG grants may be used by eligible local governments for clean-up of unauthorized dumps; establishment of a collection programs for recyclables, white goods or other bulky wastes; public education campaigns on solid waste and recycling; salary support for local solid waste enforcement officers; household hazardous waste collection programs; and other activities that support proper management of solid wastes. Fossil Road Show and MGMS Gem, Mineral, Fossil and Jewelry Show
MDEQ Geologists will be participating in the Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society's Gem, Mineral, Fossil, and Jewelry Show on February 26 and 27 at the Trade Mart in Jackson. Find more information here.

MDEQ Geologists Appear on Mississippi Roads
Interviews with MDEQ Geologists Jonathan Leard and James Starnes were featured in a recent episode of Mississippi Public Broadcasting's Mississippi Roads.
Jonathan provided information about Red Bluffs in Marion County, and James revealed more about ancient glacier rocks from a gravel pit in Hinds County.

Changes to Asbestos and Lead-Based Paint Notification Forms
Notification forms for Asbestos Demolition and Renovation and Lead-Based Paint Abatement and Renovation have been updated by MDEQ’s Air Division. The asbestos notification form can be found here and the lead-based paint notification form can be found here.
MDEQ requests that owners and operators of asbestos and lead-based paint project facilities begin using the new forms immediately. Older versions of each form will continue to be accepted for a period of one year from the date of this announcement. Also, please update any copies of the notification forms on file to the most current version.
MDEQ has also created a new email address for the submission of asbestos and lead-based paint project notifications: notifications@mdeq.ms.gov. Notifications that have been properly completed and signed will be accepted as the original notification and a mailed, faxed, or hand-delivered copy will no longer be required. Notifications for lead-based paint abatement projects will still need to be delivered to the MDEQ offices along with the required fee.

Sharkey and Washington Counties Flood Risk Open House March 1
The Mississippi/FEMA Risk MAP Team will host a Flood Risk Open House at 4:30 p.m. on March 1, at the Washington County Convention Center in Greenville.
The open house will provide the public with an opportunity to review the recently completed preliminary Flood Insurance Study and its accompanying preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps that include base flood information and identification of areas subject to flood hazards for the following communities: the Town of Anguilla, the City of Greenville and the unincorporated areas of Washington County and Sharkey County. enHance Member Siemens Energy Awarded EPA Pollution Prevention Recognition
Siemens Energy, of Richland, was recently recognized by EPA Region 4 as a Pollution Prevention Award winner for the projects submitted to MDEQ's enHance program. enHance is a voluntary initiative to recognize environmental leaders in Mississippi.
