Cocktail Corner
Hosted by Janice Weaver
The only souvenir I brought back from my vacation was a cold. I'm using Maker's Mark but you can use whatever your man is drinking.
1 tea bag
6oz hot water
2oz bourbon
1T honey
1t lemon juice
Pour all the ingredients into your favorite mug and find a cozy blanket. Stay well this season. Cheers!

LOVE of the LEAF

What fake fall?
Well since we are getting some fake fall temperatures here in the south we might as well take advantage of it. So lets fire up a cigar and pour a drink or 2. Sometimes it is fun to have to different spirits poured to sip with your cigar.
This go round we are have the Alec Bradley Kintsugi Wabi /Sabi. This is new from them and is said to be a medium bodied stick. with Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Mexican San Andreas binder and a Nicaraguan filler.
If you are wondering how I do this ill sip black coffee between the whiskies to clear the palate.
The cold draw on the cigar it dusty and sweet. I am pairing this with the Garrison Brothers Guadalupe (Stole the bottle from Justin) and the Lochlea Ploughing Edition. I personally am not a fan of port finished whiskies with a couple exceptions. For me this one is too heavy on the port which is why I wanted to pair it with a cigar. Many of the whiskey bottles I have not like by themselves do pair well with a cigar and this is not letting me down.
The cigar s toning down the port finish and if bringing a sweetness out of the bourbon. Maybe this is the San Andreas leaf who knows but it is working out perfectly. Then a sip of the coffee and on to the Lochlea. It is a Lowland Single Malt. These are not particularly a favorite of mine but I do find some that I enjoy and this distillery is one of them. the ex-Islay barreling put just a touch of smoke in the nose. The crisp apple notes are great for fall. Maltiness not not an issue with this one it is as sweet on the palate as the nose. I will be honest I was not particularly looking to pair this one but Matt asked me it I had tried this one and I have to go see if It was in the collection, and it was. I have to say that the whisky my itself if fabulous. but it has turned the cigar to have a harsh earthy note. It I go back to the Garrison brothers, I loose the earthy and get more of a dark chocolate leather taste.
To finish I think the Lochlea would be perfect to pair more with something on the cigar profile of a Montecisto or a Davidoff. The Garrison Brothers is more suited for the Kintsugi rounds out the flavors of ach other.
I would love to know everyone's thoughts on the choices and have you ever tried the double pairing?
Also I think I prefer the traditional Kintsugi over the wabi/sabi release but I am not letting this good cigar go to waste!

The industry is in a weird state. Spirits sales are down. Prices are increasing, and things are crazy. From doors closing and distilleries around the world we do see some new ones making a go at it. We are worried that they are going to have a hard time of it. We see regular shelf bottles seeing increases in price but brands like Barrel Bourbon are having a reduction. We see Dettling is attempting a dramatic change with dynamic pricing of releases. We see the thought process to control the supply and demand for a phenomenal whiskey but man we think it will lock out the possible new consumers from trying. We even hear the rumors that Crown is looking to move bottling into the US. Like we said weird times.
Let us know what you are seeing and hearing. Any thoughts?

Blue Note Honey Rye Cask
Blue Note Honey Rye Cask begins its journey by embracing the art of fusion. American oak barrels used for finishing are repurposed to produce a delicious, locally sourced, barrel-aged honey. We then return the bourbon to these honey-infused casks for another round of aging to create a distinct and harmonious profile. Blue Note’s bold and spicy notes blended with nuanced flavors of wildflower honey guarantee that with each sip, you’ll enjoy an intricate balance strength and sweetness.
Aged: A minimum of three years
Product Type: Straight Rye Whiskey
Mash Bill: 95% Rye and 5% Malted Barley
Proof & Filtration: 117.2 Proof, Unfiltered
Crafted in Memphis, TN
Nose: Very Light Apricot, Vanilla, All Spice, and Oak
Taste: Caramel, Hints of Apricot, Oak, Floral Finish, All Spice.
Finish: Soft and Balanced, Light texture with lingering hints of Wildflower and Honey
Sippers Take:
Let’s start by saying that the nose is soft and sweet. no ethanol on the nose. The honey light but you get the floral rye notes. As you take a sip you definitely can tell that the proof is there, the palate is all honey and cinnamon. If you are not a fan of prominent honey notes this is not for you. The flavor is all honey. We have been able to try this release side by side with the bourbon honey cask and we were not as impressed with the bourbon. We think they rye is the one to go for if you can find it.

SoLou Gin by Distillerie' Acadian
Aged: NAS
Proof: 86 Proof
Crafted in New Iberia, LA
When distillers dream up new recipes, they often search the globe for the perfect ingredients to create the flavor profile they’re after. But sometimes, you only need to look right in your own backyard. After years of trial and error working to identify a recipe for a gin that was not only delicious, but also drinkable and even appealing to those who do not claim to be “gin lovers”, the exact combination of botanicals were married together to create an exceptional surprise. A variety of botanicals found their way into the final recipe including one indigenous to our home state of Louisiana: Honeysuckle.
Discover a gin beyond the ordinary, a departure from the typical London dry style. Our gin boasts a remarkable harmony of flavors, a delicate dance between zesty citrus, fragrant florals, and a hint of tantalizing spice. The citrus notes provide a refreshing zest, the florals impart a subtle elegance, and the spices add a gentle warmth, resulting in a masterfully balanced gin that stands out from the rest. This unique blend of elements elevates your gin experience, promising a taste that is both distinctive and utterly delightful.
Sippers Take:
Gin is a topic of polar opposites. Most people are on the I like gin side or the I hate gin side. There we said it. Bobby is on the I hate it side but thanks to Phillip over at Distillerie' Acadian he no longer get to say that. This is a very soft and approachable spirit. Nose is light on the "pine" and more of the floral side. The Palate is cool and easy to sip. There is a nice sweet note that is in the mid palate through the finish. This is a nice bright sipper by itself but you MUST try this in your favorite cocktail.

Nose: The Nose is rich biscuity cheesecake, maple syrup, and caramelized ginger with toasted oak notes.
Taste: Spiced rye bread, juicy peaches, tangy lemons. A cask strength expression of our signature recipe.
Sippers Take:
Ok normally we do write on more than one spirit per category but this is an exception. NC'NEAN is something we feel is very special. This is a 100% renewable energy facility 100% recycled glass and a Net Zero emission distillery. Ok enough with the bragging rights.
We were turned on to this distillery by our friends at Impex and got to sample this with the company rep. We immediately had our friends over at spillway request this release. So here is what is even more special! it hit the store shelves and was sold out in a matter of 2 weeks! That's right a Scotch sold out that fast in a world where people say scotch does not sell, and there are not any scotch drinkers. We have to say kudos to Nc'Nean for releasing such an amazing single malt.
The palate is tart fruit think red grapefruit. You get dark fruit on the nose. The finish is nice soft malt notes that just linger. The higher proof tones down the malt and brings a lot of the barrel influences out. We cannot say enough about this distillery. if you see a bottle we think it is absolutely worth purchasing. If you see one at a bar get a pour!

I got permission before sharing this. My group South MS Spirit Samplers hosts tastings for charity each month and this month we are trying to pay for mammograms for underprivileged women at risk through Komen for the Cure. Wearing pink is cute, but it takes green to fight this fight. And our small tastings are not capable of generating the level of funds we need.
We have drawings at each tasting for various distillery swag and a bottle or two (J Mattingly and America First this month). Tickets are just a dollar each. With permission I’m calling on this community to help us with this venture. For every dollar you donate we’ll add you to the drawing and gladly ship to winners (in the continental US). Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Please help. Any amount you can give will help and is greatly appreciated. Here’s how:
