The House and Senate are wasting no time in moving bills to Committees. This week the Senate heard SB 1032, Senator Mike Moon is the sponsor, that would authorize a taxpayer to claim a $2,400 exemption during the tax year in which a taxpayer gives birth to a child. This would help a family with the costs of carrying their baby to childbirth. Missouri Right to Life supports this legislation.
Another important pro-life bill heard this past week was the “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act”. This legislation would ensure the same protections for a baby born alive after an attempted abortion as any other child born through the natural birthing process alive. This legislation is important because a baby born alive after an abortion attempt where a document has been signed authorizing the abortion is in greater danger of not receiving medical care. We saw this situation in Virginia and New York a few years ago and we do not want this happening in Missouri. The law needs to be specific that these babies born alive after an abortion attempt will be specifically protected and that there will be a penalty for not giving them care.
House sponsors for these bills are: Rep. Brian Seitz, HB 1667 and Rep. Holly Jones, HB 2294. The House bills are scheduled to be voted out of committee on Tuesday, January 27th. While the House held hearings this week on these bills in the House Children & Families Committee, Senators Brad Hudson and Rick Brattin have similar bills in the Senate. Senator Brad Hudson’s “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” legislation is SB 999 and Senator Rick Brattin’s bill is SB 1221.
Continue to pray for the House and Senate as the legislative session progresses. The Senate Democrats are filibustering and nothing is moving in the Senate at this time.

Be sure and mark your calendars to attend “Show-Me Life Action Day” on Wednesday, March 11 at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. Lobbying your legislator begins at 10:00 a.m. with a rally at Noon on the first floor rotunda featuring Abortion Survivor, Melissa Ohden as our Key Note Speaker.
