PMA Offers Communications Workshops
Can your congregation say yes to these statements?
  • Our church has a clear and concise goal in mind for its communications.
  • Our church maximizes the use of its social media platforms.
  • Our church’s website is easy to navigate and tells the congregation’s story.
If you’re not sure about your congregation’ s responses to any of these statements, you may want to schedule a communications workshop in 2020.

This daylong workshop, conducted by communications professionals on the Presbyterian Mission Agency staff, will provide tips and techniques to better reach your audience. We’ll offer insights and guidelines on creating a communications plan and you’ll learn proven techniques for enhancing your church’s website and using social media tools like Facebook and Twitter. The workshop also will include the "do’s and don’ts of media relations and "pitching" stories to your local media.

The workshops are completely free of charge. For more information or to schedule your 2020 communications workshop contact Gail Strange at  [email protected]  or call 800.728.7228, ext. 5340.

Events and Programs
Hymnal 101 Coming on January 25
Rev. Dr. David Gambrell, contributing editor to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) “Glory to God” hymnal and Executive of PAM (Presbyterian Association of Musicians) will present “Hymnal 101” on Sat., Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church sanctuary, 324 Madison Street, Jefferson City.

Rev. Gambrell will describe the intensive planning that goes into the preparation of a hymnal that is intended to be used for the next 20 to 30 years. This is a particular challenge in a time of changing tastes in church music and a shift from printed material to digital sources.

The presentation will draw attention to the breadth of material in the new hymnal. Some hymns step back in time including selections such as I Love to Tell the Story and Bringing in the Sheaves— hymns not appearing in Presbyterian hymn books for many years. Some of the steps forward encompass many new hymns and styles.

Rev. Gambrell is associate for worship in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of Theology and Worship and coeditor (with Kimberly Bracken Long) of the Book of Common Worship (WJKP, 2018). He was an ex officio member of the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song (responsible for the 2013 hymnal "Glory to God") and coordinated the 2017 revision to the PC(USA) Directory for Worship (part of the denomination’s Book of Order). Rev. Gambrell is author of Breathing Spirit into Dust: Fifty Hymn Texts (GIA, 2015) and Presbyterian Worship: Questions and Answers (WJKP, 2019).

The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available behind First Presbyterian Church off Wall St. (between the church and Hawthorne Bank) Handicapped parking is available on Wall St. For more information, call First Presbyterian Church at 573-636-2149.
