Advancing Black Homeownership

Foundational to our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, Habitat's Advancing Black Homeownership initiative addresses persistent inequities in homeownership and helps our communities thrive by increasing the number of Black homeowners in the U.S.

Systemic barriers have resulted in significant disparities in homeownership for Black families in the United States. Black homeownership rates have declined significantly over the past decade and are the lowest among all racial groups. Homeownership is the most powerful way to address racial wealth disparities for people of color, especially Black Americans. Recognizing that we cannot do everything at once, Habitat is focusing on Black households. We believe the work will benefit other marginalized populations by focusing on the population with the most significant disparity.

Habitat’s mission and vision compel us to respond to the homeownership gap. Equity has been intrinsic to our work since before Habitat was founded and we see the Advancing Black Homeownership Initiative as fully living our mission. Removing barriers to homeownership for Black households and other underserved communities is fundamental to our mission of building homes, communities, and hope.
