How can we help our children become life-long readers?
Connecting children with books they will love is one of our most fun challenges- with one of the greatest rewards. It is the most important element in helping them develop as life-long readers.
How can you support a love of reading from the earliest ages? Read, read and read with your child...

Mercaz Academy Celebrates Inauguration With Official Ribbon Cutting, as featured in area news

"...Senator James Gaughran charged the students to remember this time as the first students at Mercaz Academy. He noted that Mercaz Academy emphasizes its quality secular education, but also pointed out the importance of the religious education offered by Mercaz Academy.
“Our young people today face so many challenges,” he said. “I think it is so important to give young people the opportunity to understand their roots and their heritage, and make sure they’re well-grounded as citizens of this country..."

GrowTorah's First Day at Mercaz Academy
|
GrowTorah is off to a fantastic start, and grades one through four (along with the ECC) reaped the benefit! Farmer Menuchah Schuman arrived for her first outdoor lessons connecting conservation and agriculture to the Torah portion. Since this week's parsha, Ki Tavo, discusses the mitzvah of bikkurim (first fruits) and sharing portions of our harvest with those in need, Farmer Menuchah discussed how we can accomplish the values of this mitzvah through the giving of tzedakah in the form of fresh produce from our GrowTorah garden. Kitah Aleph Visited by Shofar Blower, Hebrew-Speaking Lion
|
|
Kitah Aleph children are learning Hebrew letters, but may have been surprised by a recent visitor. Ariot, a well-known Hebrew-speaking letter lion, brought each student in Morah Shani's class his or her own copy of a Hebrew book bearing his name. These first graders have also been practicing making their letters with sensory input. They formed the letters aleph and bet using pompons, Play-Doh, and kinetic sand.

Kitah Aleph also had another special visitor this week. Morah Shani’s husband, Mr. Kaufman, came to class to teach the children about blowing the shofar on Rosh Hashana. The children got to see, hear, and touch shofrot from two different animals. They also played “Name That Sound" to identify tekiah, shevarim, and teruah.

Meet Mrs. Danielle Wasserman
|
Mrs. Danielle Wasserman, our new learning center teacher, is certified in both elementary and special education, and holds a master's degree in literacy. She chose the field of special education because, she explained, she really enjoys working with students one-on-one and helping all children succeed. "My favorite part is that lightbulb moment when something difficult suddenly becomes clear," Mrs. Wasserman said...

Sixth Grade Learns Textual Sources for Shofar
|
Rabbi Dr. Elliot Grossman, a Mercaz Academy grandparent, visited the 6th grade this week to teach them about the shofar blasts blown on Rosh Hashana. Our students were enthralled by the way Rabbi Dr. Grossman guided them through the Talmudic process, providing them with a deeper appreciation for the Torah sheb'al peh, our oral tradition. The sixth graders also enjoyed a practical demonstration of shofar blowing.

Mrs. Stephanie Bobroff, our school counselor, has created a group designed to make the middle school transition easier for our senior students by teaching them organization and study skills throughout the year. These sixth graders are making sure they are prepared for a "neat new year" with well-planned, organized, color-coded binders.
