Mixed Media Performance Artist Margaret Craig

Returns to Salina

Crystal Hammerschmidt

Art Services Coordinator

You may have met Margaret Craig as the Creature from the Bleached Lagoon during the Smoky Hill River Festival in the past two years. Her costume (above) is made from recyclable plastic. Margaret employs unique surface design elements and various sculptural and printmaking techniques, creating varied textures and patterns to create her complex creations. When you look closely, you will see how many small parts are assembled into performative wearable works, installations, and wall-bound creations. Margaret was celebrated as the  San Antonio Art League & Museum's 2024 Artist of the Year and we are excited to welcome her back to Salina for a third time!

Starting the first week of February, she will be a artist in residence at the Art Center Warehouse throughout the month. Margaret will be using her time to construct a costume called the Twisted Twister for a new roving performance, set to debut during the Smoky Hill River Festival this year, June 12-15.

During Margaret’s residency, she is also offering a four-week workshop for adults at the Art Center Warehouse:

Mixed Media & Special Effects in Acrylic.”

Each week, we address effects that can be created with a particular medium and discuss how to build a surface. The first week will address liquid acrylics; then we will move on to Mat Soft Gel with paint handling, Xerox transfer, and collage. Finally, we will end with Liquid Tar Gel Medium and create paint skins, Crackle effects, spatter effects, and unique finishes to mimic epoxy with the last week to mix everything together.

Opportunities Through Kansas Connections

Hello, all you faithful Creative Connections readers, artists, and creators! We are making a shift in our delivery of regional opportunities to you through this email. The Kansas Arts Commission has started a new opportunities page, listing many of the things we have sought to list here for you. You can view their page at the link below and also send them information about opportunities you may have. They are taking the time to create a robust list that will be a benefit to us all, especially if we use it regularly.

For Salina-specific opportunities, we will continue to list those here in this email and share them on the Salina Create Facebook page. We are excited to support this new resource and hope that it will help create a wider network of opportunities for us and our neighbors to take advantage of in the year ahead.

In creativity,

Anna Pauscher Morawitz
