MoF Exhibits, Events, & Programs

Mountain Mining Days

Saturday, September 6 | Walsenburg Main Street & Miner’s Plaza

It’s the 12th Annual Mountain Mining Days Festival -- once known as La Plaza de los Leones, after the city's historic name and the Fiesta led by former Commissioner Art Bobian and Wilma Martinez. The celebration kicks off with a Main Street parade, followed by a lively street fair along West 6th Street and at Miner’s Plaza. MoF will be part of the festivities with a pop-up on the sidewalk in front of the museum, at 600 Main Street, across from the park and the Public Health is a Puzzle Mural that honors mining and labor history. Stop by for fruit juice snow cones, ice cold water, and popcorn -- just $2 each -- with proceeds supporting the Museum of Friends’ educational STEAM programming. Come say hello, enjoy the festivities, and support creative arts and learning in our community!

Pop-Up Installation: Remembering 9/11

Opening September 6th

Museum of Friends

The Museum of Friends has installed a special pop-up exhibition to honor and reflect on the events of September 11, 2001. On view are close-up photographs of Brendt Berger’s World Trade Center Mural and its demolition, placed alongside powerful first responder images by photographer Larry Racioppo from his St. Paul’s Chapel at Ground Zero Photographs collection. To deepen this remembrance, the MoF team wants to highlight The Little Chapel That Stood by A.B. Curtiss, a children’s book about St. Paul’s Chapel, the historic church that miraculously survived steps from Ground Zero and became a sanctuary for first responders. We offer it here as a way for young people to learn about this moment in history. Together, these works share the story of resilience, service, and remembrance, inviting reflection for those who lived through that day and offering an introduction for younger generations who know it only as history.

Gallery Spotlight: The Foundation, the Heart of MoF

The Museum of Friends’ story began one flight up, where steep stairs carried visitors away from the bustle of Duckwalls below into the intimate space of the Foundation Gallery. Today, the museum holds more than 4,000 works, yet this gallery still preserves the spirit of its origins, a place where friends’ art, ideas, and community first came together.

Visitors can encounter early contributions from artists who helped shape the museum’s identity, including works that reflect the countercultural energy of Southern Colorado. The Foundation Gallery remains a touchstone, reminding us that MoF began as an act of friendship and generosity, and continues to grow from those roots.
