TRANSPORTATION 101: BIKE LANES
You probably see a variety of bike lanes on your daily commute, but do you know their purpose? Here are a few bike lanes that you may have encountered.
Buffered bike lanes: dedicated lanes for bikes, with the added benefit of putting extra space between cyclists and passing cars typically one to two feet.
Protected bike lanes: clearly delineate space on the road for bikes and prevent cars from crossing into that space. Physical barriers such as plastic bollards, on-street parking, and planters are often used for protected bike lanes.
Sharrows: serve as a visual reminder that space on the road is meant to be shared by bikes and cars.
