“The ultimate test of your greatness is the way you treat every human being.”

Pope John Paul II

This month as I reflect on our Core Value of Leadership, I would like to celebrate the wonderful work of our 2023-2024 Student Leadership Board. The Student Leadership Board consists of ten Level 7 and Level 8 students who completed a written application and interview process last Spring to be selected to serve on the Student Leadership Board.

Each month the Student Leadership Board meets with Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Snyder, and myself to plan events and discuss ways to support the students at SHMS. At each meeting a Student Leadership Board member is assigned to lead the meeting which includes leading the opening prayer and guiding us through the agenda. The Student Leadership Board has been responsible for planning the $2 Tuesday fundraisers each month. The students on the board work with the different grade level teachers and students in advance of the $2 Tuesday event to provide them with the directions, guidelines, and timelines to successfully implement their $2 Tuesday. All of the planning and implementation has been student led by the Student Leadership Board. Thanks to their work, SHMS has helped four organizations so far this year. In addition to their work on $2 Tuesdays, the Student Leadership Board has been responsible for planning the Christmas Pep Rally, being greeters at Grandparent Days, Open House, and Catholic Schools Week representatives. The Student Leadership Board has brought new ideas to the school and ways to build community through the use of their bulletin boards by the art room and in the Dining Room.

The work of this year’s Student Leadership Board has certainly been an act of service that has positively shaped our community. They have acted compassionately in their leadership by serving the needs of the students at SHMS as well as the broader community.

Please join me in recognizing and celebrating the work of the 2023-2024 Student Leadership Board Members.

Congratulations to the SHMS Bears Swim Team

The swim team had another great season. We came in third across the board: 3rd place in both the girls' and boys' categories, as well as 3rd in the combined standing. All SHMS swimmers did an amazing job racing and represented our wonderful Sacred Heart community with pride. We are so very proud of them!

Author Visit - Order your books NOW!

Sacred Heart Model School is excited to be welcoming Kimberly Brubaker Bradley to speak to level 4-8 students about her new book, The Night War (release date of April 9, 2024) on April 10, 2024 in the SHMS Gym. The Night War shows Kimberly’s trademark ability to blend history, emotion, humor, and adventure, this time with a speculative twist. As in her previous WWII novels, the history here is vivid, working to highlight Miri’s captivating personal journey rather than overshadow it.  Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is the author of Newbery Honor winners Fighting Words and The War that Saved My Life. The sequel to the latter, The War I Finally Won, appeared on many state-award and best-books lists and was described as “stunning” by The Washington Post and “honest” and “daring” by The New York Times. Kimberly and her husband have two grown children and live with their dog, several ponies, a highly opinionated mare, and a surplus of cats on a fifty-two acre farm in Bristol, Tennessee.

SHMS Catechist Corner

The City of Jerusalem

As we draw closer to Holy Week, SHMS students in the Atrium are starting to explore the Paschal Mystery. The City of Jerusalem work includes a model of the city with movable parts: temple, walls, pools, and important buildings. This work helps the children enter into the story of Jesus’s death and resurrection by solidifying that Jesus was a real historical person who celebrated his last supper, suffered, died and rose in/around the sacred city of Jerusalem.

This presentation offers a sensorial experience of the most important city in Jesus’ life. Key sites of the passion, death, and resurrection are highlighted with a brief narrative of those events. The aim of this presentation is to communicate Jesus’s total gift of himself culminating in the resurrection. The perfect gift of God’s self-giving love for us.

In the Atrium, we never speak of Jesus dying without immediately mentioning his rising. The focus isn’t on his death, but rather on the gift of his life, of his love, and how his rising from the dead meant Jesus could share that gift with all of us.

Level 8 Egg Drop

Thank you to the Louisville Fire Department for helping our Level 8 scientists reach new heights for their egg drop experiment! 🚒🥚🎈Students had so much fun cheering on the brave firefighter who dropped the L8 eggs from 60 feet high! There were a few accidents, but most eggs dropped safely intact, the result of hours of research and experimentation. Great job, L8!

Each day prior to Thursday, an update will be shared during the PM announcements to let students know if SHA Academic Coaching is planned for that week. Scheduling is done at the high school level. Please contact Mrs. McGreevy at [email protected] with any questions.
