November 10, 2023

Leadership is an act of service that positively shapes the community. We act as leaders by compassionately serving the needs of others, being risk-takers that go beyond expectations, and seeking to inspire.

Leadership is one of our Ursuline Core Values at Sacred Heart Schools. Thanks to our Catholic education rooted in the Ursuline tradition, we have the gift of our core values to guide us and focus us each and every day. Leadership is alive and well in Sacred Heart Model School. Through the Jean Frazier Leadership Institute on campus, we have learned that anyone can be a leader. We work hard to recognize, celebrate, and provide opportunities for our students to learn about leadership and practice being leaders.

Over the past few weeks our students and teachers have been living out the core value of Leadership in different ways.

  • Level 3 and Level 5 students have been Book Buddies with preschool classrooms at SHP. Our students are selecting books, practicing reading them and asking questions, and then reading them to a preschool student at SHP once a month. This year they have also formed a relationship with their buddy and have a prayer card so they can pray for their buddy when they are not seeing them.
  • In Level 6 Language and Literature, students participated in a Socratic Seminar. Mrs. Rugg observed certain students being leaders by participating and leading the group discussion, and also supporting students who had a harder time speaking up by giving guidance and encouraging classmates to share their thoughts and ideas.
  • In Level 2 students are demonstrating leadership by watching out for classmates to ensure their safety, helping classmates memorize prayers, and taking initiative to complete optional activities that go beyond the requirements.
  • Our Level 8 students demonstrated leadership during the month of October by planning and organizing our first $2 Tuesday. They took time to research organizations and determined The West End School as the recipient.

Each day I witness students and teachers being leaders in big and small ways. In our school prayer we pray, “Help me to be a leader by serving and inspiring others to make positive impacts in our school.” We are so lucky to be able to call on God and ask for his intercession in our lives each day at Sacred Heart Model School.

SHMS Catechist Corner

Raised Surface Map of the Land of Israel

In the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium, your children are entering a space where they come to know God more and more. All the materials in the Atrium invite students to explore more deeply about the life of Jesus and of the Church. At Sacred Heart Model School, all JK-L1 students visit the Atrium weekly.

As we approach the season of Advent, we begin to explore stories from the Holy Bible about the gift of Jesus’ birth. Our attitudes with the children as we move through these infancy narratives is one of reverence and awe, as we wonder together, “Who is this child?”

In the past two weeks, all of our SHMS Atrium students have been focusing on biblical geography. For the most important events of Jesus’ life, we use a three-dimensional, handmade relief model of the Land of Israel. With younger children, we let them feel the lay of the land, briefly noting its terrain with mountains and valleys, deserts and waterways. Then we name and briefly identify the three principal cities that spotlight the greatest events of Jesus’ life: Nazareth, where the angel announced to Mary His conception through the power of the Holy Spirit; Bethlehem, where He was born in a stable; and Jerusalem, where He died and was resurrected. We offer the raised surface map, as maps help the child figure out their place in the world.

In sharing about the three cities that are most important to Jesus’ life, we help our students see how Jesus was a real person sent here to our world. We identify, name, and give a brief description of each of the cities which invites our children into the stories of Jesus’ life.
