September 1, 2023

Reverence is at the heart of our actions resulting in mindful relationships built with compassion.

We act with an abiding respect for God, ourselves, each other, and all of creation.

Reverence is one of our Ursuline Core Values. A group of teachers and staff members were assembled on campus last winter to define the core values. Thanks to the work of that group, we have the definition of Reverence seen above to guide our actions each day. What I appreciate most about this definition is that it calls us to act with respect for God, ourselves, each other, and all of creation. Reverence goes beyond our common understanding of being respectful when entering Church or remaining quiet during Mass. It is how we show up for God throughout each day, how we think about ourselves, how we treat one another, and how we care for the Earth.

Over the past few weeks our students and teachers have been living out the core value of Reverence in different ways.

  • Level 6 is practicing reverence by spending time with God. They learned that to know others we must spend time with them, and this is certainly true of God! Level 6 students journal during Religion class. They ask the Holy Spirit to help them hear God’s word. Then they read the scripture three times to allow God to speak to them. Next, they can choose to letter a key word that stands out and/or begin a love letter to God. Mrs. Dusterhoff’s hope is that Level 6 grows to understand the significance of “God & I” time and to cherish their journals.
  • Mrs. Tedesco’s Kindergarten class has been working on saying the Sign of the Cross using prayer buddies and reverent hands. Check out their reverence in this video. Sign of the Cross in Mrs. T's Room
  • Mrs. Snyder’s Level 7 and Level 8 Individuals and Societies classes took time to discuss historical leaders that demonstrate reverence by brainstorming leaders that showed compassion and respect. Here are a few leaders that both Level 7 and Level 8 students identified: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Native Americans, abolitionists, and Pope Francis.

It is a gift to be able to discuss our Core Values daily at school and to apply the definitions of these values into what students are learning in the classroom. Each morning in our school prayer we pray, “Help me to show Reverence by showing respect to God, others, and myself.” We are so lucky to be able to call on God and ask for his intercession in our lives each day at Sacred Heart Model School.
