Text in French. Andre Dignimont, in a career spanning over four decades, primarily worked in illustrating books and theatre decoration. He formed a distinct personal style using washes of watercolor incorporated into pen and ink. This style perfectly evokes the emotions of this collection of Baudelaire's poetry which expresses the changing nature of beauty in modern, industrializing Paris during the 19th century and coined the term modernité (modernity) to designate the fleeting, ephemeral experience of life in an urban metropolis. The extra suite on chine: 10 black and white engraved plates, nine in water color, plus the extra original etching. Brianchon, an influential master at the Ecole des Beaux Arts continued the tradition of of Bonnard and Vuillard in the intimacy of his compositions. In 1949, Brianchon was appointed Chef dAtelier de Peinture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Printed by Fequet et Baudier, the original water color illustrations pulled by hand onto copper plates. Limited edition, copy 16 of 44 on Japan imperial paper. 18 color pochoir plates of contemporary actresses in their famous roles, including Sara Bernhardt, Marthe Brandes, Mariette Sully, Lucienne Breval, et al. An early caricature work by Cappiello before his acclaim as a poster artist. Cappiello started his career illustrating in journals: Le Rire, Le Cri de Paris, Le Sourire, L'Assiette au Beurre, La Baionnette, Femina, and others. In 1898, he moved to Paris, and his caricatures were published in Le Rire for the first time. He was the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds. An Alphabestiary.

Limited edition, copy 79 of 100, signed by John Ciardi, with twenty-six poems by Ciardi, [one for each letter of the alphabet] and twenty-six original signed lithographs in black and white and color. The lithographs were printed by the "Il Torcoliere" workshop, Rome. Martin Elting Hebald, more noted for his sculpture contributes his alphabetical vision, each lithograph housed in separate, individual portfolios. Interior contents fresh, bright. and clean. Hebald created a series of pieces in 1960 featuring representations of the Zodiac on the exterior of the Pan American World Airways Worldport at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. In Zurich, Hebald was commissioned to do a life sized, full figure portrait of James Joyce, for Joyce's tomb. He also made a bust of British novelist Anthony Burgess. Laid-in the publisher prospectus for the title, and a summary biography of Hebald. Wear at tray-case front cover joints, light cover soiling. Laid in with the 19-pp. pamphlet Postface to Hidden Faces comprising of Objective Chance and Reverie. His first and only novel. Hidden Faces was originally written in French in 1943, two years after Dali had published his autobiography to great success. Chevalier, a professor at Berkeley University, spent several weeks with Dalí, translating directly into English as Dalí wrote. The novel was completed in two weeks on the estate of the Marquis de Cuevas in Franconia, a mansion in the mountains of New Hampshire next to the Canadian border. Paris: Np, 1951. First edition thus. 291 pages. Folio, 45 x 35 cm. Copy 161 of a total edition of 280 copies. 33 engraved plates and numerous woodcut vignettes. Engravings were printed by Georges Leblanc on the presses of Marthe Fecquet and Pierre Baudier. The woodblock text ornaments by Paul Baudier after designs by Derain. Ambrose Vollard commissioned this project in the 1930's, the latter's death and World War II prevented completion until 1951. An early member of the Fauve group, and the Cubist movement, Derain participated in the elaboration of Cubism, but refused to adhere to the movement, turning toward study of the Old Masters. As Douglas Cooper states [see: THE CUBIST EPOCH p.68], "Derain understood the full purport of all that Braque and Picasso were attempting to do (in their Cubist period). But in his own work he followed another line of development." Loose as issued in unsewn sheets in cream wrappers. Slight toning to portfolio vellum.
