Beginning next week, repairs on Mohawk Boulevard and Olympic Street will shift to the paving portion of the projects. The paving will be done as nighttime work scheduled to lessen traffic impacts: Sunday through Thursday nights, from 7 pm to 7 am the next day. Once paving is completed, traffic striping and markings will be applied to the pavement including crosswalk markings. Work on the two projects began in early February 2021 and will continue through the fall of this year.

Work will begin later this week on 42nd Street between Main Street and the entrance to International Paper. This is another project as part of the 2018 voter-approved GO Bond Measure 20-296 to fix Springfield streets. Work will begin on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalk ramp improvements. Once completed, work will shift to the paving portion of the project. Paving is estimated to begin later this summer and will be completed by September 30, 2021.

Where is the work taking place for projects underway?
On Mohawk Boulevard from G Street to the interchange with Highway 126 and on Olympic Street from Mohawk Boulevard to 28th Street.

What are the construction work hours?
For crossing ramps and intersection work: 7 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. The upcoming paving on Mohawk Boulevard and Olympic Street will be at night: Sunday through Thursday nights, from 7 pm to 7 am the next day.

What is happening with the crosswalks?
The construction activities include removing the old concrete crossing ramps, grading the ramp areas, and pouring the new ramps. The ramps take several days to cure before they can open to the public.
 
Why do the current ramps need replacement?
We are upgrading existing ramps to be compliant with the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
 
How are vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles impacted during construction?
The existing sidewalk ramps are closed and there is a posted detour route for pedestrians and cyclists. Businesses and residences will remain accessible to vehicles.
 
The streets look in pretty good shape, why is construction happening now?
It is much less expensive to re-pave streets before damage happens to the sub-surface layers. Repairing the streets now will save significant funds in the long term.
