Momentous Year to Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.
Many ways to honor Dr. King in West County
Monday, January 20 is the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, with celebrations and service opportunities around West Contra Costa County.  (See list below.)

MLK Jr. Day has added significance this year, as 2014 is the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty. This landmark legislation created Medicare and Medicaid, food stamps, and the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, which funded a host of local programs aimed at reducing poverty including Head Start preschools.

Dr. King's brave fight for civil rights, and the War on Poverty were powerful engines of change and empowerment for millions of residents, with lasting benefits.

But more work needs to be done on reducing poverty and achieving true equality for all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. I'm deeply committed to these goals.

I hope you'll join me in honoring the inspiration of Dr. King, as we continue to work together on achieving his civil right's dream. Take a look at related events:
