SciStarter Newsletter May 2026

Mother’s Day is Sunday! An opportunity to remember that care, curiosity, and encouragement often shape how we connect with science in the first place.

Citizen Science Month (April) showed just how powerful those connections can be. Together, more than 422,000 volunteers from 140 countries contributed more than 4.7 MILLION Acts of Science, supporting hundreds of real research projects around the world! That's nearly DOUBLE the goal we set of 2.50 Million in celebration of America's 250th Birthday.

For Mother’s Day, we invite you to explore our featured projects with the moms, mother figures, mentors, and encouragers in your life, to share curiosity and ask questions together.

Cheers!

Exoplanet Watch

Is your mom out of this world? Show her Exoplanet Watch, a NASA-supported citizen science project where anyone can help study exoplanets (planets orbiting stars beyond our own solar system). Use your own telescope or a remote, robotic one provided by the project to measure how quickly these distant worlds orbit their host stars and contribute directly to real astronomical research.

Sound Around Town

Hear's the scoop, moms! Noise is everywhere (yes, even louder than a school morning), but its impact is rarely heard about. This project tunes in to how everyday sounds affect our focus and sense of place. You'll listen, rate sounds, play a quick memory game, and get a cool soundscape visualization. Just three short sessions per location: it's a sound investment in science (and some quiet "me time").

NatureSpots

For the moms who encourage you to "stop and smell the roses," NatureSpots is a chance to turn moments into biodiversity research. Share photos and observations of the nature around you while helping document wildlife, track invasive species, and better understand ecosystems around the world.

Space Cloud Watch

If your mom is the type to text “go outside and look at the sky right now, Space Cloud Watch might be the perfect project to explore together. Help NASA researchers track rare noctilucent clouds — glowing clouds that form at the edge of space — by reporting when and where you spot them in the early morning or evening sky.

CommuniMap

You know the moms who somehow know every shortcut, neighbor, tree, community garden, and local story in town? CommuniMap is built for that kind of curiosity. Use the app to notice and share what makes your neighborhood unique — from nature and movement to everyday community life — and help build a collective map of how people experience the places around them.

SciStarter Classic: Mom's Choice!

In one of our favorite throwback events from 2023, SciStarter team member Emma Giles put her mom in the driver's seat for SciStarter LIVE, and they celebrated some of their favorite citizen science projects together.
