This week, Georgetown President John J. DeGioia announced that John T. Monahan, JD (C’83, L’87), a health and social services law expert, will serve as the interim dean of NHS for the 2021-22 academic year as of September 27, the day after Carole Roan Gresenz, PhD, who served as interim dean for two years, concludes her service.

In a message to the GUMC community, Edward B. Healton, MD, MPH, executive vice president of health sciences at GUMC, welcomed Monahan in his new role and expressed gratitude for Gresenz’s service, calling her “one of the most impressive leaders I’ve worked with.”

GUMC faculty have secured the most training grants in the university’s history, including seven National Research Service Award Institutional Research Training Grants. Together, these pre- and postdoctoral training grants bring in over $24 million in funding to train innovative early-career scientists.

Upcoming Road Closures/Detours
|
|
1. Starting on or about September 13, the portion of Tondorf Road beginning at Darnall Hall and running north will be closed Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. through September 25. All sidewalks will remain open.
|
|
|
2. From September 21 through September 30 (estimated), construction along West Road adjacent to the Leavey Center will require slight sidewalk and road detours just south of Lombardi Circle. Hours of impact will be 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. All northbound and southbound pedestrian and vehicular traffic will remain open; however, foot traffic will be routed to the west side sidewalk and vehicular lanes will shift during portions of the work. During this period, the mini shuttle will pick up passengers in front of the hotel. Signage will be provided and flaggers will be present to guide traffic during all impact hours.

3. From September 20 to September 24, traffic at the Canal Road entrance will be limited to one lane 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. to accommodate DC Water utility work. Flaggers will direct traffic. This closure will also impact GUTS shuttles. Please be aware of potential delays to arrival or departure from campus and the Southwest Quad Garage.

A phase II randomized clinical trial found that the optimal period for intensive rehabilitation of arm and hand use after a stroke should begin 60 to 90 days after the event. The study, conducted by Georgetown University and MedStar National Rehabilitation Network (NRH) researchers, was published September 20 in PNAS.
