Sunday Morning Experience

Join us for Worship Online at 10:30 am

Service Sunday - Keeping Our Community Safe
Sunday, October 18,  8:00 am
Contact: Justice League

Before worship at 10:30 am, in living out our social justice vision we will support our community in a variety of ways:

Open Space Clean Up, 8:00 am
Take action for environmental justice! We’ll be cleaning our own “back yard” from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Best to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes, and please bring gloves and trash bags. Masks and social distancing are required! Where’s our open space? Baldwin Gulch, trailhead at Twenty Mile Road and Ponderosa Drive.

Winter Clothing Drive, 9:00 am
In support of our siblings at Ready to Work/Bridge House, from 9:00-9:30 we will be collecting winter items at the Open Space site. We’re seeking coats, hats, scarves, gloves, warm socks, and long underwear!

Drive-Thru Blessing of the Ballots, 9:00 am
In support of our nation, swing by the Open Space site between 9:00 and 9:30 and Melissa will be on hand to bless your ballot in person! Bring your ballot! We need all the help we can get!

Service Sunday Worship - Keeping Our Community Safe
Sunday, October 18, 10:30 am
Contact: Justice League
Please join us on Sunday, October 18th for Service Sunday. One Sunday a month rather than having our regular Sunday Worship Service after a shortened worship service, we focus on Service and Education to support our community.

How do we deeply listen (our October theme) to our community and what they need to feel safe? There has been a lot of talk about the police and what we expect from them in order to keep our community safe. Prairie's Justice League welcomes our special guest, Vinnie Cervantes, a community organizer and the Denver Alliance for Street Health Response’s point person with Support Team Assisted Response (STAR) to talk about what alternatives to current policing could look like.

Join us for Conversation:
Beginning at 10:15 via Google Meet or by phone @ 1-361-360-8585‬ PIN: ‪992 842 341‬#. This will be our space to chat and socialize before and during the service. We will also share Candles of Community immediately following the service in this same meet.

Watch the Worship Service:
Our Sunday morning service will be available live
What You Missed:
If you missed Worship over the last few weeks, you are invited to visit our Facebook page, YouTube or on our website to view our services.

The CoSM team will be continuing to work with the Widening the Circle program with the Board and Justice League. This meeting has been changed to Tuesday, October 20, please attend, we need your input!

 In Faith,
From the Board ...

Happy October!!

A Thank you to those who attended the Town Hall meeting on Sunday, October 11, 2020.!

I hope our effort to inform members and friends of our technical resources to connect during the pandemic and to stay in right relations was helpful.

Information not shared due to time to discuss other agenda items, Prairie UU technical resources presented by our staff and minister and the COSM's process for Restorative Listening for right relations, please note the following information.

Communications and Membership: The Board received a request for reestablishing a Communication and Marketing Committee. Since our Bylaws indicate a role for the Board in supporting Standing Committees, efforts were made to identify members and a Chair. When there was no chair available, the Board considered several options. The one supported was to combine the Membership and Communications Committees. Brenda P is the new Chair of Membership and is interested in serving on the Communications Committee including Kim Murray, Janet Stevens, and Jim Rogo. This combined committee can advise the staff about members' preference for types and frequency of communications and needs of the broader community and visitors.
Please contact Brenda P, with questions and suggestions. Growing our membership and staying in covenant with current members is essential to our faith community.
Prairie UU Trust Fund: This fund has no resources currently, but is described in our bylaws. Although Trust funds are required to register with the State, Prairie UU is not registered. The committee elected to manage this fund, Chair Janet Stevens, Tom Heisler and Michael McVey, are recommending a new type of fund that is more flexible to be established. When the elected committee has decided on the best approach, I will ask the congregation to take action on their proposal. Please send suggestions, questions and ideas to Janet S.

Contract for Pastor AJ:  As I hope you recall, based on the COSM recommendation, the Board approved unanimously a 3rd year contract for Pastor AJ. Subsequently, we learned that Pastor AJ cannot sign a contract until the Ministerial Fellowship Committee that oversees his preparation for ordination agrees to a third year. This may not be decided until April of 2021. The Board voted, again unanimously to extend the offer. We want AJ to be our minister and finish his fellowship and be ordained. He will work full time during the budget year, for a summer free to complete his chaplaincy.

Thank you for reading this. The Board is committed to keeping you informed about our activities and welcomes your suggestions and questions.

The Finance Committee is holding a Special meeting on October 14, 2020 at 6:00 pm to discuss and recommend additional fundraising initiatives. Please send your ideas to Financecommittee@prairieuu.org.  As I hope you know, our fundraising activities are an important part of our budget that supports PrairieUU's activities, programs and staff. Committee Chairs should have received information about the amount of money allocated to their committee's activities. If you did not receive this information, let me know. (vivianl@prarieuu.org)

Please mark your calendars for our next Widening the Circle of Concern presentation and discussion on October 20, 2020 at 6:30 pm by Google Meet. (See Calendar) The topic is: Theology. Andrew Paschetto and Pastor AJ will present their ideas for Prairie UU.

"The faith of free persons must tangibly make them free in a community of human dignity and equal justice." James Luther Adams, A Faith for the Free

The next Board Meeting is on October 21, 2020 now at 6:30 pm to 8:15 pm on Google Meet. The Board will open the meeting to members/friends at 6:45 pm. All are invited to attend the entire meeting. The Finance Committee meets at 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm prior to the Board meeting. Questions about that meeting can be directed to Clark H

Our new Soul Matters Adult Small Groups program will help us each develop a deeper understanding of the monthly theme and build connections among participants.

The October theme is Deep Listening.

Please review the packet for October here.

The next Sunday morning LifeSpan small group will be at 11:45 am on October 25th.

  • To access the October packet link above you must use your PrairieUU email account.
  • If you do not have a PrairieUU email account - please contact Rhonda W.
  • If you would like a pdf copy of the October packet, please contact Janet S.
Because of copyright rules, we are not able to put the Soul Matter packets on our website.

In the packet there will be:
  • Several spiritual exercises to choose from
  • Several “questions” to choose from
  • Lots of additional resources, including readings, videos and music
In the group time, you will share your experience/reflection with the exercise you chose. After members share their experience, all participants can reflect on and appreciate others sharing. You may find you want to use the packet for a journal exploration that could be done if you are participating in the group or choose to explore on your own.

Contact Janet S with questions.

Life-Transitions Support Group

Do you need someone to talk with, who's gone through a similar life transition?  Would you like someone to help guide you to find your own path through a difficult time?  Are you going through a divorce?  Have you been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or disease?  Are you living in an abusive relationship?  Have you lost one or more loved ones?
Any of these situations, and many others, can be very difficult to navigate alone.  Many have found that getting together with others in the same 'boat,' and telling your stories, can be very healing and helpful.  My wife and I have facilitated such support groups in the past.  Our own personal histories include having gone through many of these issues.  We have been through divorces, survived life-threatening illnesses and diseases, lost loved ones, both young and old, and experienced abusive relationship situations.  Our facilitation style is primarily based on listening to people's stories, telling our own stories in similar situations, and using open questions to help you discover your own path through these life transitions.
We will be meeting on the second Wednesday of every month.
