From Pastor AJ ...
Hello Beluvs,

I want to first thank you all for all your support to my family and me over these past two weeks in regards to my father’s passing. I am forever grateful for all your love.

I would also like you to know that there has been wonderful new UU community forming in the region. The Mountain Top: A UU BIPoC Community has been officially formed in the last two weeks in response to the asks and needs from our BIPoC community members who attended the 2020 Front Range BIPoC Speakers Series.

I would like to invite all to:

Follow us on twitter www.twitter.com/mountaintopuu

Yes, I did say us! The development of this new community has come to be through the collaboration of the Front Range Congregations. Through the Colorado UU's United for Racial Justice. PrairieUU has been a leader in this group. We are acting as the fiscal agent for The Mountain Top community and handling much of the marketing and administrative processes. I would like to thank, Jen S, Denard T, Mary S, and Rhonda W as well as the Board and COSM for their support of this process. Without their support this would have never been possible. Please let me know if you any questions about The Mountain Top, I will be happy to share what I know.

In Service,

From the Board ...
It's December! Let's bring our Thanksgiving gratitude of hope for a healing and healthy 2021!

Update on Board Activities:

Revised Nomination Policy and Procedures: The Board recommended more work on the revised policies developed with revisions from the COSM and Board members. The COSM is now working on another draft for Board approval in December. We hope to introduce the new policy and procedures at the January 31, 2021 Congregational Meeting.

Prairie UU Handbooks: There are 5 in development or revision. The Board's goal is to have written policies, procedures, and clear job descriptions for all leadership and committee positions. These will be in one place, on our Google documents and accessible to the members and visitors. If you are interested in helping let me know. We will be seeking advice from those of you who have leadership roles. Watch for an email from me to provide input to your and your committee's role and responsibility.

Board Liaisons: The Board has defined the role of Board Liaisons to Standing Committees. The Liaison position is identified in the Bylaws, but needed definitions and responsibility. Committee Chairs should watch for this description soon. The Liaison position is designed to be supportive of each committee's work and to keep the Board informed of Committee's needs and activities.

January 31, 2021 Congregational Meeting: Mark your calendar and send suggestions for agenda items to me. The Congregational meeting will take place after the Sunday Service.

In Covenant,

President Board of Trustees

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION ADVOCATE
Board Liaison to the Nominations Committee
Contact: Vivian L

The Board is recruiting an individual to serve as a Board appointed advisor to the Nominations Committee. Our work with the COSM to create a more inclusive, diverse slate of nominees for Congregational Elections has led the Prairie UU leadership to recognize the need for an individual with experience and understanding of how bias can influence our choices and prevent a wider representation of diversity in our Prairie UU leadership. If you or someone you know is interested in serving in this role, please let Vivian Littlefield, President of the Board of Trustees know. The position should begin in time for our nomination process in March 2021.
COMMUNITY SAFETY ADVISOR/S
Contact: Vivian L

The Board is seeking an individual or three individuals to serve as Advisors to our Prairie UU Community on Safety in three areas:

  Pandemic Safety
  Personal and Cyber Safety
  Sexual Misconduct

The role/roles as currently envisioned is that the Advisor/s would search the local, state and national information sources for evolving information, review the UUA resources in these areas and provide regular, timely information to the congregation and the church leaders. The specific role and activities can be proposed by the individual/s who assume the role/s. If you are interested in serving in this important position/s, contact Vivian Littlefield, President Board of Trustees.

Those of us at PrairieUU may remember Vinnie Cervantes, Director of Denver Alliance for Street Health Response (DASHR), who gave the message on Service Sunday recently, and spoke further with us during Learning Hour.  Vinnie will be having a conversation with us about transforming safety, racial justice, and creating alternatives to policing and jail in Douglas County.

We hope that Prairie members and everyone else in our group can attend!

Control of COVID-19 Is on the Horizon

I hope that we all realize how critical it is for us to control the pandemic and that the key to achieving this will be immunization. I would like to share some specific information about vaccines as soon as the data have been evaluated by independent medical experts. In the meantime, I have written the below introductory item, which may be a bit trite, but which is meant to emphasize the importance of immunization. I would like to submit follow-up news items soon that will provide factual information about the vaccines. If you think that this blurb and the plan to have follow-ups are not appropriate for the newsletter, let me know. I will try to find some other way of sharing information. As a former medical epidemiologist at CDC, I am serious about this subject and think that my insights may be helpful.

Sincerely,
Clark H.

Since there are no uniformly effective therapies for coronavirus infection, we must rely on strategies that prevent infection. Public health measures, such as mask-wearing, physical distancing, and isolation, although effective, are difficult to enforce and have not been adequately adhered to by the public. They have proven inadequate to stop the pandemic in the U.S. It now appears that control of the pandemic will require both the public health measures and mass immunization. The currently emerging vaccines, many of which are based on messenger RNA technology, seem to be highly effective and remarkably safe. As these vaccines become available, we should all embrace these remarkable advances in medical science and protect ourselves, our families, and our communities by participating as soon as possible in the national immunization campaign. Only when the momentum of COVID-19 has been broken will our lives and economy begin to resemble their pre-pandemic states.
