THE SEED PART 15
JESUS PART 2
HIS BAPTISM – AND TEMPTATION
______________________
Isaiah had prophesied in chapter 40:3, “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
John the Baptist was the one Isaiah spoke of. He would come preaching repentance throughout Jerusalem, and Judaea, and round the River Jordan. Many came to him confessing their sins and were baptized.
Jesus also came from Galilee to be baptized. He was not a sinner, but he was setting an example for others to repent of sin. John did not want to baptize him because he knew that Jesus was the promised seed. Jesus spoke to him and said in Matthew 4:15, “And Jesus answering said unto him, ‘Suffer [allow] it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he [John the Baptist] suffered [allowed] him.”
When he was baptized [by immersion, the biblical way] he came out of the water. The heavens were opened, and John saw the Spirit of God descending upon Jesus like a dove and staying on him. [Matthew 3:16] Then a voice from heaven spoke, saying “…This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” This is a perfect example of our triune God appearing at one time.
When Jesus came up from the water, he was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness where he fasted for forty days. Then Satan came to him, tempting him three times. It was his plan to get Jesus to sin, thereby destroying the Promised Seed.
Each time Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus quoted scripture to him. After failing three times, Satan left him for “a season.” [Luke 4:13] Satan did not win this battle, but his influence upon others would try to bring destruction to Jesus, the promised seed.
When Satan comes to us with temptation, sickness, or lies, we must also use the Word of God to defeat him.
Tomorrow, we will see how Jesus’ ministry would be tested repeatedly. The plan to destroy the seed would continue.
