NATIONAL BUCKET LIST DAY

April 24 celebrates National Bucket List Day to remind us it’s never too late to set new goals, go on a dream vacation, and inspire people around you to enjoy life to the fullest.

By definition, a bucket list is a list of things a person would like to do, but has never experienced before. Some people refer to them as milestones, while other people refer to them as goals. Whatever you call them, a bucket list is a list of things a person would like to accomplish before they die.

What Is A Bucket List?

A bucket list is the list you create to make the most out of life. It is a list of goals, dreams, and aspirations you would like to accomplish before you pass away. The basic meaning of a bucket list is to keep track of your goals by making yourself accountable to achieve all you want in life. The purpose of a bucket list is to encourage ourselves to accomplish goals within in a specific timeframe.

Our time on earth is short. Very few of us pause to think about how we spend what time we have. Creating a bucket list can help you live your life to the fullest. It also gives you the opportunity to appreciate the life you have and reflect on the good things to come.

Bucket List Ideas

A bucket list can be anything you want it to be. Your bucket list should reflect your interests. In fact, we’re guessing there are no two lists alike. If you are a simple person, create a bucket list that reflects the simple pleasures in life. If you gravitate towards extravagant things or love to travel, your list will more than likely consist of ideas that require more of a financial investment.

Simple Bucket List Ideas

  • Graduating from high school or college.
  • Having children.
  • Buying a home.
  • Becoming a freelance photographer.
  • Participating in a painting club.

Extravagant Bucket List Ideas

  • Go on a cruise.
  • Visit the Rainforest.
  • Visit all the continents in the world.
  • Visit historical landmarks across the country.
  • Ride a hot air balloon.

Travel Bucket List

  • Travel to Europe.
  • See the ancient Mayan ruins.
  • Visit Egyptian tombs.
  • Travel Route 66.
  • Visit all the state parks in North America.

Finding Gratitude

Living a life of gratitude is key to living a well-rounded life, full of happiness and satisfaction. Gratitude allows you to find every day moments and turn them into long-term fulfillment. Completing items on your bucket list will help you realize the opportunity you have been given as you experience life-changing moments you thought might never happen. Enjoy the ride and show gratitude for the adventure you have in this life.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

  • Be brave and have some fun by learning to paint, drive a race car, skydive, surf, or jump off a cliff.
  • Sample local food and drink during your travels.
  • Create a bucket list with a friend that you both can enjoy.
  • Watch the movie Bucket List, staring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.
  • Pay it forward with a bucket list that allows you to donate time to an orphanage, local soup kitchen, or food pantry.
  • Share your videos and photos on social media from your bucket list adventures using #NationalBucketListDay.

The Department of the Air Force has selected Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB) New Orleans to receive one of its newest fighters, the F-15EX Eagle II. NAS JRB New Orleans is located in Belle Chasse, Plaquemines.

Generally, this allows NAS JRB New Orleans to continue its decades-long mission of protecting and defending the Gulf South region of the United States.

Specifically, it means that NAS JRB New Orleans, which employs about 2,000 civilians at an annual payroll of $171 million, and at any given time is home to 5,000 to 6,000 military personnel, will be well-protected from future closure. So, the announcement of the new fighter jets protects both our country, and the region’s economy.

GNO, Inc. has advocated for this outcome over many years, alongside the Louisiana federal delegation, the Governor, Louisiana Economic Development, local leaders, and military partners across the state.

The new F-15EX costs about $100 million. The two-seat, twin-engine jet can fly 2½ times the speed of sound, or about 1,918 mph, making it the world’s fastest fighter jet, according to Airforce-technology.com. It has a range of 2,762 miles — and can be refueled while in flight — and a ceiling of 60,000 feet, according to Air & Space Forces magazine.

International High School of New Orleans Senior Sets New All-time Record with 125 College Offers and More than $9 Million in Scholarships

IHSNO Senior Dennis Barnes expected to make his college choice by May 2

(NEW ORLEANS) – Hundreds of colleges and universities across the country are offering millions of dollars of scholarships to recruit high school scholar Dennis Barnes, a senior at the International High School of New Orleans. To date, Barnes has been accepted into 125 colleges and universities and has been offered a total of more than $9 million in scholarships – more than any other college bound senior in U.S. history.

Barnes, who plans to announce his college decision by Monday, May 2, now holds the national distinction of being among the top seniors accepted by the most colleges with the most financial offers in scholarships.

“I submitted college applications in August, with an eye on raising the bar high for college admissions. Decision letters were an overflow in my mailbox and hundreds of scholarship offers,” said Barnes who is a native New Orleanian looking forward to beginning his college career this fall.

Barnes’s mail carrier is delivering a wealth of scholarship letters from the universities and colleges across the United States to his Marrero, Louisiana home, and addditonal decision responses are pending from several other universities across the country. In total, Barnes applied to 200 schools nationally and received 125 scholarship offers as of today.

In the past, other seniors at the International High School of New Orleans were accepted into hundreds of colleges with more than $10 million in scholarships total, but Barnes has set the new record in the U.S. with his own total of $9 million. His goal is to reach $10 million by month’s end.

According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the top college scholarship receipient was a high school senior in Lafayette, Louisiana who received $8.7 million in 2019. The Guiness Book of World Records has been contacted about Barnes’ new scholarship record.

Barnes plans to pursue a dual undergraduate degree in Computer Science/Criminal Justice.  He has been dually enrolled in Southern University of New Orleans for the past two years pursuing college credits while completing his high school diploma at IHSNO. His graduation is set for May 24 at Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center.

“Dennis has grown into a hard-working scholar and ideal IHSNO student who is eager to help his fellow students with their academics,” said Dr. Adierah Berger, Head of School for IHSNO which is a public, college preparatory International Baccalaureate high school located in the heart of downtown New Orleans.

Barnes has an academic achievement level and a holistic approach to education is phenomenal. He has sustained leadership positions as the Executive President of the National Honor Societies. Also, Barnes has maintained a cumulative grade point average with great honor of 4.98 at the secondary level. Barnes’ distinction of honors started in elementary school where finished strong with a 4.0 grade point average. Barnes has been a candidate of the Principal Honor Roll the duration of elementary and high school.

In addition, Barnes is fluent in Spanish and has received an official qualification known as “Diplomas en Español” granted by the Institute Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. He was also recently awarded the Jose Luis Baños Award for Excellence in Spanish Language by Maria Page, Honorary Consul of Spain in New Orleans.

“Dennis has demonstrated and handled the depth and complexities of his renowned academic accomplishments,” said IHSNO College Admissions Counselor Denise James. “He is humble, a goal-setter, a positive thinker, and his words of encouragement towards his peers are rewarding.”

Currently, Barnes holds a cumulative grade point average of 4.0, based on his outstanding academic achievement pathway for “Summa Cum Laude Distinction” – the highest honor.

Barnes applied to a total of 200 colleges nationwide with the guidance of his college high school counselor Ms. James, who is credited with motivating Barnes and past record-setting recipients Jada Jerrell Brown (2021), Antoinette Love (2019) and Darrin Francois (2018).

And when it comes to tips for seniors applying to colleges and for scholarships, Barnes’s advice is to be vigilant: “The road to a successful future is to plan ahead, network with the collegiate partners, and know that If you can see your vision, you can achieve your goal”.

Which words best complete these example sentences?

NCAA baseball projections: LSU, SEC stand tall headed into regular season's final month

BY PATRICK MAGEE

The LSU baseball team stands in a strong position to be the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA baseball tournament headed into the final month of the regular season.

The SEC dominates with six of the top eight national seeds in the first projections of the season for The Times-Picayune/The Advocate. While it seems unlikely that the conference will get that many national seeds when the full field is announced in late May, it's hard to deny that the SEC is far and away the best league at this point of the season.

The Tigers (32-7) have a firm grasp on the No. 1 overall seed, but SEC foe South Carolina isn't that far off the mark at 34-6 coming off a sweep of Florida. LSU and South Carolina split the series 1-1 in Columbia earlier this month after the third game was canceled because of weather.

Dallas Baptist, which is in its first season in Conference USA, checks in as the 16th overall seed thanks to a dominant showing in April so far. The Patriots have won 14 straight games in April to push their record to 31-9.

Southern Miss, which has an early-season sweep of Dallas Baptist, is another a contender to host a regional, but the Eagles lost two of three games at Coastal Carolina and three of four games last week. Miami (25-15) also has a strong case to make as a regional host, but the Hurricanes may been lapped this week by Duke, which improved to 27-12 with a three-game sweep of Louisville.

NATIONAL PIGS-IN-A-BLANKET DAY

On April 24, observe National Pigs-in-a-Blanket Day with just a few ingredients.

Celebrated across the world, the term often refers to a variety of different dishes. In the United States, Pigs-in-a-Blanket is often hot dogs or sausages wrapped in biscuit or croissant dough and baked. Pigs-in-a-Blanket are generally served as an appetizer or as breakfast. However, it can be served at any mealtime!

Another popular version of pigs-in-a-blanket includes cabbage rolls stuffed with a beef filling. It’s often covered with a tomato or cream sauce. Many recipes use the name “Pigs-in-a-Blanket” to describe just about any meat product wrapped in something. For example, one recipe we found called for stuffing a hotdog with a slice of cheese and wrapping the whole works with bacon. No dough or cabbage involved here.

And while some references give Betty Crocker credit for the first printed use of the phrase in 1957, records as early as 1901 reference recipes for pigs-in-a-blanket in a variety of forms. However, the phrase did increase in usage in the English language after it was printed in the 1957 cookbook.

The 1920 mayoral election in New Orleans between Martin Behrman and Andrew McShane was more contentious than most – and that’s saying a lot. To most observers, it was a battle between “The Ring” or the Democratic-Conservative machine (Behrman) and the Orleans Democratic Association (McShane). This circular billboard represented the ring and was affixed with posters in support of Behrman.

Among the posters tacked to the reverse of the circular billboard read “Red Blooded Men of New Orleans, Is there one among you who will by his vote ENDORSE the slanders and vilification of out Women and our City? YOUR ANSWER MUST BE Elect BEHRMAN AGAIN” and “Women’s Honor, Children’s Purity mean nothing to a prejudiced Press who would win at ANY PRICE! Your answer must be Elect BEHRMAN AGAIN.”

McShane unseated the long serving incumbent Behrman, garnering 51% of the vote. Behrman would be reelected in 1925.

Photographer John T. Mendes captured the moment on Canal Street at Bourbon, now part of The Historic New Orleans Collection archives.

MUSEUM NOW OFFERS ENCHROMA GLASSES FOR COLOR BLIND AUDIENCES TO EXPERIENCE COLOR

As part of our mission of accessibility and inclusion, Ogden Museum of Southern Art has partnered with EnChroma to make the colors in our artwork accessible to the color blind. Color blind guests can now borrow EnChroma glasses for color blindness at Ogden Museum for the duration of their visit.

Imagine being unable to see all the colors in a beautiful painting, a flower, a sunset, or the color of a loved one’s eyes? While people with normal color vision see over one million shades and hues, those with color vision deficiency only see up to 10% of colors. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are color blind: 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%). That means that over 1.9 million people in Louisiana and over 160,000 people in New Orleans are color blind and yet until now no museum in the state of Louisiana or in the city of New Orleans included accessibility options for this significant population.

Ogden Museum is proud to be the first museum in Louisiana to offer this new option for color blind guests.

Ask for Enchroma glasses at the front desk when you purchase your tickets to experience our art in full color!

BBQ Cauliflower Wings

Not only is cauliflower nutritious, but it is also incredibly versatile! You can enjoy it mashed, roasted, in soup, in pizza crust, as rice, in “steak” form, turned into tots, and cooked up as wings. This BBQ cauliflower recipe from Eat With Clarity is not only delicious, but it is a great lighter alternative to chicken wings. Suffice it to say, this BBQ cauliflower wing recipe will not disappoint. Serve and enjoy immediately for maximum crispiness.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cauliflower
  • ¾ cup dairy or non-dairy milk
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 12 ounces (1 1/2 cups) bbq sauce

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Chop the cauliflower into medium sized florets.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together salt, onion powder, garlic powder, flour & milk.

Add the cauliflower to the batter and mix to coat each piece. Toss in breadcrumbs.

Add the cauliflower to a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 25 minutes, turn the oven off, then let sit for an additional 5 minutes. The wings should be golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes.

Add the cauliflower to a bowl and coat with the BBQ sauce. Serve immediately.

In this fresh adaptation by Director and Writer Sara Holdren, a company of performers have to figure out what to do when Romeo runs off with Lady Capulet and leaves their production of R&J two actors short. What about that silly twins play??? Two sets of identical twins are separated at birth. Many years later, on the shores of Ephesus, a father attempts to reunite them. Several cases of mistaken identities, comical mishaps, and hijinks ensue! But never fear...In one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies, all's well that ends well. Families are reunited, love is sparked, and the show will go on.

Comedy of Errors is being directed by Helen Jaksch with Assistant Direction by student, Jada Mills and will run April 26, 27, 28, & 29 2023 at the Lower Depths Experimental Theater in Music & Communications Complex on Loyola’s campus. All performances begin at 7:30 PM.

JAZZ @ THE SANDBAR

ANNOUNCES SPRING 2023 SEASON

with 7 Sessions, First Time Guests

As Jazz at the Sandbar approaches its 30-year anniversary, it continues to fulfill its mission of providing direct mentoring by acclaimed jazz masters through concert performances with UNO Jazz Studies students. These experiential learning opportunities are an integral part of the Jazz Studies program, bringing to life the ideas and concepts shared in the classroom by the program’s exceptional faculty. Jazz at the Sandbar also provides the extended UNO community with the rare opportunity to see and hear world-class artists in an intimate setting, while observing the development of the next generation of jazz presenters and performers.

The program brings acclaimed local and global musicians to the UNO campus for weekly teaching artist residencies for daytime masters classes and intimate workshops, and then evening public performances where the students perform with the guest artist in a professional setting.

Typically, each of the Spring and Fall seasons of the Jazz at the Sandbar series host six sessions. This year, in a sort of post-pandemic comeback, the program returns to present eight sessions this year, with an additional guest teaching artist, and a season closing session featuring the end of semester recitals from the student musicians.

Friday Night Wine School, Premium Sake Selections with Chris Johnson, World Sake Imports

Friday, May 12, 2023

As much as we love sake here at Swirl, we understand that purchasing it can be intimidating - the labels are confusing, the information mysterious - how many times have you looked at sake on display in a store and walked away? It’s just so…foreign. And unfortunately as Americans, most of us are familiar with sake in its most common form – at the sushi restaurant, served in a plain white carafe, and usually piping hot. Drinking this type of low quality, “house” sake warm is a must, as it masks the flaws and takes the sharp edge off some of the harsher flavors. It is generally of the lowest quality, sometimes described as “jet fuel” by sake aficionados.

Premium sake is a lot like quality wine - just like great wines are defined by their terroir, premium sake is defined by local geography, the ingredients (water, rice, koji and yeast), and the personality and skills of the brewmaster, or toji, all of which play a role in shaping the palate. These sakes tend to have much more elegant and subtle flavors carefully curated by the brewers, and heating will potentially destroy those flavors. Depending on the yeast used and the polishing level of the rice, some can be more light and fruity while others more savory and full. It is a complex beverage that is fantastic for food pairings, and not just with Asian food.

Always looking for educational opportunities, we are excited to hold our first sake focused Friday Night Wine School with Chris Johnson from World Sake Imports. Chris is a saké sommelier certified by the Saké Service Institute and a certified WSET Level 3 Saké Educator, and in 2013 earned the distinguished title of Saké Samurai. He'll discuss how sake is made, the different quality levels and styles, along with wine parallels and pairings. We hope you'll join us! Go here to reserve your spots, Premium Sake

Love Louisiana Seafood?? Most of you who shop with us know they we just love giving suggestions on food and wine pairings. So when I told the staff I’d like to do a series on staff picks for specific foods and activities, I received some pretty quick answer for what they like to drink with seafood.

Seafood season here in Louisiana kicks into high gear right after Mardi Gras. Partially because of Lent and maybe a little to do with warmer temps and crawfish availability, this time of year is heaven for seafood lovers. How lucky are we to have sources for everything from blue crab to shrimp, crawfish, and oysters, not to mention the abundant selection of fish from drum, to red snapper, redfish, sheepshead, mahi mahi and more? Check out our staff picks here, Our Seafood Friendly Wine Picks

swirl + 1000 figs = yum!!

Did you know you can eat delicious food from 1000 Figs at Swirl? Here's how it works - get a table (indoors or outdoors) at Swirl, order your food at Figs and tell them you have a table at swirl. Order your wine at Swirl and have a seat, sipping on your wine til they bring you plates of heavenly food! How great is that?!?pesto & pigato I can't eat pesto without thinking of its famous home in Italy, the Ligurian coast. A small and breathtakingly gorgeous region, Liguria sits on the Mediterranean Sea in Northwest Italy. And of course the perfect pairing comes in a the form of a local wine made from Pigato...go here for the recipe & pairing,  Pesto & Pigatoneed orange?

...we have a few! As the category of natural, minimal intervention wine continues to grow, winemakers are increasingly turning to an age-old winemaking practice in their white wine production. Before we had all of this technology at our fingertips, winemaking in the ancient world was a simple practice - read moreBoozy Drinks Anyone?

City Recycling Opportunities

Ellis Marsalis Documentary Gets New Orleans Premiere Dates

by: VERONIKA LEE

Ellis, an intimate documentary on the late beloved Ellis Marsalis Jr. will make its New Orleans premiere next month at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. German filmmaker Sascha Just, who befriended the jazz pianist during one of her many trips to the city, turned teaching music into a Civil Rights Act and mentored a generation of top musicians while changing modern jazz. The film has screened at Doc NYC Fest and most recently at The American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs. The film chronicles how the performer, composer, and educator transcended racial injustices he faced from his childhood during segregation to his death from COVID 19.

OffBeat spoke to Just in 2020, during the fundraising phase of the Ellis Marsalis documentary film, about the musician’s outlook on life. “With one sentence he could say something really wonderful and be so insightful and funny.  That was it — just one sentence. I loved how involved he got when he speaks of things he is interested in and how in depth he could go into about these things. Even though I am not a musician he became a  role model on how to pursue something…to stick with it and go with what you love,” stated the filmmaker, who resides in New York.

The film includes interviews with Ellis’s sons Wynton, Branford, Ellis III, Delfeayo, and Jason as well as Ellis’s last concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC. Featuring never-before-seen historic footage, the film also contains a solo concert performed by the elder Marsalis exclusively for the film.

Ellis will make its New Orleans premiere Wednesday, May 3 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, 400 Esplanade Avenue. The event will kick off with a live performance from Jason Marsalis and the E-Quintet followed by the screening at 7:30 p.m.

Snug Harbor will screen the documentary the following night, Thursday, May 4. The historic Frenchmen Street music club where Ellis held court as bandleader weekly for over 30 years will host a one-day multi-media celebration of the music, life and legacy of Ellis Marsalis Jr, the “E-Day Festival” featuring an intimate, limited-capacity premiere screening of Just’s film, and two live musical tributes to Ellis led by Jason Marsalis with members of E’s last band. The Snug Harbor screening will host an opening reception and cocktail hour from 5-6 p.m., including a meet and greet with the filmmaker and Jason Marsalis, and some of Ellis’s band members, while ticketing and seating take place. The 6 p.m. screening will be followed by two live concerts led by Jason Marsalis and members of the E-Quintet, ticketed separately, at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Tickets for the Snug Harbor screening are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets for each of the live performances are $40, or an advance bundle package of $50 for film plus one concert. Snug Harbor states seating is very limited, advance tickets for all presentations are strongly suggested. Tickets for each presentation can be purchased at http://SnugJazz.com

2nd Annual Food Fight Returns in New Location

New Orleans, LA – New Orleans Food Fight presented by Stella Artois moves from the Bywater’s Crescent Park upriver to the Riverwalk Outlets Spanish Plaza on Thursday, May 25th from 6-10pm. Food Fight is the inaugural event at the plaza following the recent completion of the ferry landing and the new Four Seasons Hotel.

The one-night only event produced by Yeah You Right Events benefits the PLEASE Foundation, a Louisiana 501(c)(3) that provides mentorship, leadership training, and scholarships for at-risk students to attend local college preparatory high schools in the New Orleans area. Last year’s events raised over $50,000 for the PLEASE students currently attending local college preparatory high schools.

“Thanks to our amazing sponsors and fans, our first Food Fight was super successful,” said event producer Shane Finkelstein. “It’s now one of  the biggest chef competitions in the city and a great opportunity to showcase New Orleans’ top chefs and mixologists while raising money for our next generation of local leaders.”

Food Fight fans and celebrity judges choose the winners for Top Classic Dish, Top Creative Dish, Top Vegetarian Dish, Top Classic Cocktail and Top Creative Cocktail. Fest-goers will also enjoy creative pop-up bar areas and DJ lounges, spirit tastings, top local bands, burlesque by Trixie Minx, and additional eye-popping visual elements.

Confirmed competitors for Food Fight Champion include Apolline, The Chloe, Deanasco’s, Los Jefes Grill, Mahoney’s Poboys & Seafood, Messina’s, Saint John, Soulé Cafe, Tava Indian Street Food, and Wishing Town Bakery. Spirit sponsors include Casamigos, Crown Royal, Hard Hide Strawberry Whiskey, Jack Daniel’s, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Ketel One, Makers Mark, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey, Tres Generaciones, and Who Dat Spirits.

The Food Fight VIP Experience presented by William Grant & Sons includes open bar, food tastings by James Beard nominated chef Michael Gulatta of Maypop, Hendrix Gin and Milagro Tequila cocktails by the bar team at Meril’s, plus gourmet desserts, and additional entertainment including James Andrews and Honey Island Swamp Band.

Food Fight ticketing options include $135.00 VIP, $105.00 Early Entry/First Tasting and $85.00 General Admission. Early Bird discounted tickets go on sale March 12th starting at $55. Once inside the festival, all food and drinks are included. Visit www.foodfightnola.com for more information.

Sponsors for Food Fight 2023 include Stella Artois, Hyundai of Metairie, Performance Food Service, Riverwalk Outlets, Where Y'at Magazine, N.O.Vative Printing, Element, Evamor Natural Artesian Water, and Joe’s Septic Contractors.

This year’s goal is to double last year’s amount and raise over $100,000 for the PLEASE Foundation so they can continue to do the important work they do in our community.
