NATIONAL NAVAJO CODE TALKERS DAY | AUGUST 14
Each year on August 14th, National Navajo Code Talkers Day honors the contributions of the Native Americans who brought their unique abilities to the World War II effort. The day also highlights their impact on U.S. code and the Native American language that made it possible.
While code talkers were instrumental during World War II, the United States military used the Native American language in their coded messages before. During World War I, the Choctaw tribe’s language was called upon to relate coded messages.
One member integral in creating the military code was Philip Johnston. While he was not Navajo, Johnston did speak the language fluently. He also recruited the native speakers necessary to the Code Talker’s success.
Initially, there were 29 Code Talkers, including Charlie Sosie Begay, Roy Begay, Samuel H. Begay, Eugene Crawford, Oscar Ilthma, and Lloyd Oliver, to name a few. However, that number would grow. Until 1968, the program remained classified. At that time, the United States presented the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers with Congressional Gold Medals. Additionally, the remaining Navajo Code Talkers were presented with Congressional Silver Medals.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS ISSUES EMERGENCY DECLARATION FOR EXCESSIVE HEAT
NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today signed an Emergency Declaration in anticipation of peak hurricane season and the ongoing, unprecedented extreme heat New Orleans is experiencing.
City officials stressed concerns that, in the event of a tropical storm or hurricane, any significant power utility disruption while under extreme heat conditions will likely greatly increase the danger of injury or death, especially among the elderly and vulnerable, due to heat related illnesses.
“Thinking about the unprecedented times and challenges we are living in and having to work through, the City recognizes the need to be proactive to the excessive heat that we know is not going to slow down,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “What is unique to New Orleans is that we are on the frontlines of an already-changing climate in the midst of peak hurricane season, which makes this even more critical for us to meet our people where they are and put safeguards in place for what could come our way. While there has been no federal or state declaration on excessive heat, we need to recognize that this heat has become an unparalleled ongoing crisis for communities across the country. Now, more than ever, we must work together with our partners to ensure our communities get the resources they need to respond to emergencies and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow.”
The National Weather Service (NWS) indicates that 2023 has already broken or approached multiple records for heat, including:
- Most excessive heat warnings (EHW), that is, feels like temperatures of 115 degrees or higher with 18 (record was 5 in 2021)
- Most consecutive days with excessive heat warnings (9)
- Most 95+ degree days (38)
- 2nd most heat advisories with 26 (record is 27 in 2021)
- 2nd most 80+ degree nights with 14 (record is 15 in 2016)
In addition:
- New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) reports that heat-related calls for service (cfs) have increased from a monthly average of 25 cfs to an average of 100 cfs this year
- Coroner’s Office reports six heat-related deaths so far this year
- In a five-year comparison, New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) reports a drastic increase of 24 vegetation fires for 2023, including two active marsh fires in Bayou Sauvage and Maple Ridge subdivision - from the previous average of 14 vegetation fires between 2019-2022
New Orleans Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) activated and continues to maintain a City Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) Level III for this excessive heat warning period, which means the City will continue to monitor these dangerously hot temperatures daily.
“One of the biggest challenges for the City has been trying to figure out how to sustainably incorporate heat relief into regular City operations and services,” said Collin Arnold, Director of NOHSEP. “This emergency declaration will allows us to continue extreme heat response efforts, as well as enhance preparations ahead of peak hurricane season.”
Through this emergency declaration, the City will be able to:
- Expand hours for nine of 15 NORDC locations to be available seven days a week until Oct. 1;
- Activate resources and personnel to support the City’s existing unhoused outreach and heat relief efforts;
- Mobilize an overnight cooling center equipped with emergency generator switch connectors for unhoused residents through Oct. 1;
- Pre-stage designated NORDC sites with generators in case of tropical weather impacts;
- Require senior living facilities and nursing homes to report any ongoing challenges or challenges to the City on a daily basis; and
- Expedite emergency repairs through emergency contracting to protect City employees, outdoor workers and first responders from the ongoing extreme heat
Earlier this summer, the City of New Orleans launched the NOLA Ready Heat Relief Map, which can be found at ready.nola.gov. This interactive map lists free, indoor air-conditioned locations for the general public.
Businesses or organizations that are willing to act as a free community cooling site should email ready@nola.gov with the address, dates and hours to be added to the map.
Residents can visit weatherwise.nola.gov to find localized updates on weather conditions when considering outdoor activities.

What does "oleaginous" mean?
Greasy
oleaginous /ˌəʊlɪˈadʒɪnəs/
Definition: having an oily or greasy quality; insincere or excessively flattering
Origin: from Latin oleaginus, from oleum 'oil'
Example: The chef's signature dish was a plate of oleaginous pasta, drenched in olive oil and garlic.

NATIONAL CREAMSICLE DAY | AUGUST 14
National Creamsicle Day on August 14th celebrates the creamy citrus dessert on a stick. During the height of summer, what better way to enjoy refreshment than with a creamsicle!
“Creamsicle” is the brand name of an ice cream treat. It consists of vanilla ice cream on a Popsicle stick with an outer coating of sherbert. While many other flavors now exist, the original flavor was orange.
Today, recipes abound with creamsicle flavors. From beverages to desserts, the flavor has long been a favorite.
An 11-year-old Frank Epperson inspired the creation when he invented the original popsicle back in 1905. After mixing up a powdered soda, he left the beverage overnight with the stirring stick in it. Temperatures dropped unusually low that night and the next morning, Epperson found the liquid frozen on the stick. He dubbed the creation the Epsicle. Sometime later, he changed the name to Popsicle.
Several generations have enjoyed the fruity, frozen treats and they continue to do so!

The New Orleans Culture⚜️
Derby Gisclair eets are challenging, consider this photograph from 1909 of a section of what we know today as Metairie Road. Under normal conditions this dirt and sand road would be difficult on both the horse and carriage but would prove to be impassable after a rain.
In 1928 the Progressive Union of New Orleans boasted that the city now had 276-miles of hard surface streets, up from 114-miles in 1910. For comparison, according to U.S. Census data, in 1910 the city had 878-miles of streets and 1,031-miles of streets in 1928. That means that in 1910 the city had only paved 13% of the streets and by 1928 that total had reached 85%.
However, that doesn’t mean that these streets were paved with asphalt or concrete – they were simply “hard surface,” meaning that the dirt could be covered with gravel, wooden blocks, or some other hard material.
Today, the city must attempt to maintain more than 1,550 miles of streets.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Poche Family Farm
Poche Family Farm is located in Independence, Louisiana, a fitting name as the family is the sole labor force on the farm. Charise (who you’ll see weekly at market), Albert, and their children Billie and Camille use sustainable agriculture techniques like utilizing natural fertilizers, organic pesticides, cover crops for soil maintenance, and unheated structures for weather resistance called high tunnels. The farm was started with the intent to grow nourishing food to feed their family, and now that dedication is carried through in all their crops as they’ve expanded the business to feed many families through our markets. Their selection varies with the season. Right now, you can find them at the Tuesday Uptown Market. Stop by the stand for produce, including tomatoes, peppers, squash, okra, and herbs like basil. Plus, you can find value-added products like freeze-dried turmeric, pepper jam, and honey.

Friday Night Wine School - Oceans to Mountains, Historical & Geographical Influences in Chile & Argentina
Friday, August 18, 2023, Sold Out
While the wine regions of Chile and Argentina share a 3000+ mile border, they couldn't be more different in terms of climate, altitude, soil, grape varieties and overall grape-growing conditions. The Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean have a profound impact on the terroir of their wine regions, as Argentina greatly benefits from the barrier that the Andes provide, while Chile, on the other side of the mountain, benefits from its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. But it's not just geography that has shaped these 2 prolific wine regions. Settled by different peoples at different times, history has played a significant role in forming wine production in Argentina and Chile. The wine industries in both countries have deep-rooted historical backgrounds that have influenced grape varieties, winemaking techniques, and the overall wine culture. Join us tonight as we taste wines from both countries and discuss how history and geography have shaped these prolific wine regions. Get your tickets here Oceans and Mountains
Friday Night Wine School - Isole d'Italia, Authentic Wines from Sicily and Sardinia
Friday, August 25, 2023, 1 spot remaining
Separated by a 150-mile stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Sicily and Sardinia are two fascinating Italian islands, each offering its own blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Both islands have rich histories shaped by various civilizations, but they have had different cultural influences. While they both share a similar Mediterranean climate, the islands also both have different geological histories and formations that have resulted in diverse landscapes and topography. These different developmental factors of Sicily and Sardinia have had a significant impact on their wine cultures. Both islands have a long-standing winemaking heritage that dates back to ancient times, and their wines showcase the diverse terroirs and climates found in the Mediterranean region. Tonight we'll explore the differences and similarities while we taste wines from both of the islands. Get your tickets here, Isole d'Italia

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

Monday, August 21, 7 pm - Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, and the English Sonnet Tradition
This lecture will cover the English Victorian poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti and their contributions to the English sonnet tradition. Attendees will explore how Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and Rossetti's Monna Innominata are groundbreaking sonnet sequences which offer women's voices responding to and reimagining the sonnet traditions named for Petrarch and Shakespeare.
Dr. Cognevich has a master's in English literature from the University of New Orleans and a doctoral degree in English literature from Louisiana State University. She taught English literature and writing for more than a decade. Her scholarly specialties include Romantic and Victorian poetry. Her doctoral thesis focused on the late-18th-century British sonnet revival and poet Charlotte Smith, who was one of William Wordsworth's early inspirations.

NASA Lecture: What's New on Planet Mars?
East Bank Regional Library
4747 W Napoleon Ave Metairie, LA 70001
NASA Ambassador John Martinez will give a presentation titled “What’s New on Planet Mars?”on Tuesday, August 22, at 7 pm at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon in Metairie.
This event is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.
The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover will search for signs of ancient microbial life, greatly advancing NASA's quest to explore the past habitability of Mars. The rover will drill the Martian surface to collect core samples of rock and soil, which will then be stored in sealed tubes for pickup by a future mission that would ferry them back to Earth for detailed analysis. Perseverance will also test technologies to help pave the way for future human exploration of Mars.
Strapped to the rover's underside for the journey to Mars is a new technology: the Mars helicopter, “Ingenuity,” the first powered flight of a vehicle on the Red Planet. It has already flown dozens of times, acting as a “scout” for safe passage of the Perseverance rover.
There are several ways that this mission is helping to pave the way for future human expeditions to Mars while also demonstrating technologies that may be used in those endeavors. These include testing a method for producing oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, identifying other resources (such as subsurface water), improving landing techniques, and characterizing weather, dust, and other potential environmental conditions that could affect future astronauts living and working on Mars.
The presentation will include an overview of the mission, scientific findings, the possibility of past life, progress on core sample collection, and a brief discussion of the proposed sample return mission scheduled for 2030.
For more information, contact Chris Smith, Manager of Adult Programming for the library, at 504-889-8143 or wcsmith@jefferson.lib.la.us.

THE WINE: We’ll have two wine aficionados with us to showcase Marchesi Antinori and Prunotto Italian Wines — Mallory Young of Southern Glazer’s Signature Fine Wines & Spirits (the world’s preeminent distributor of wine and spirits) and Ashleigh Hammel, the Brand Development Manager for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates for Southern Glazer’s. Ste. Michelle Wine Estates has a partnership with Marchesi Antinori and Prunotto wineries.
- Marchesi Antinori — The Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking for over six centuries since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild. All throughout its history, twenty-six generations long, the Antinori family has managed the business directly making innovative and sometimes bold decisions while upholding the utmost respect for traditions and the environment.
- Antinori also owns Prunotto — The winemaker’s vineyards extend over approximately 161 acres in the territories of The Langhe and Monferrato. Prunottos’ rich heritage and unique attributes are revealed in each bottle of wine, capturing the thousands of different expressions that each vineyard parcel is able to reflect. It’s a continuous challenge between tradition and innovation.
THE FOOD: European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer will prepare a four course gourmet Italian meal, complimented by the carefully chosen Italian wines. Chef Pfeifer is the current Owner of Middendorf’s and the former owner of Bella Luna, a fine dining restaurant in the French Quarter. He has a wonderful meal planned for “A Taste of Italy”… or perhaps we should say a delizioso meal. Buon Appetito!

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
