Lundi Gras is a relatively recently popularized name for a series of Shrove Monday events taking place during the Mardi Gras. It includes the tradition of Rex, king of the New Orleans carnival, and Zulu King arriving by boat. This began in 1874, but the term Lundi Gras (French for "Fat Monday")[1] was not widely applied until 1987 when the arrival was brought back as part of a series of river-related events under the name of "Lundi Gras". Lundi Gras was the creation of journalist Errol Laborde. The event was staged with the cooperation of Riverwalk Marketplace and its then marketing director Carol Thistle Lentz. The events are detailed in Laborde's book, Krewe: The Early New Orleans Carnival from Comus to Zulu.

Louisiana metro areas show construction job growth in 2023
CityBusiness Staff Reports
New Orleans-Metairie is one of six Louisiana metro areas to experience construction job growth in 2023, according to an annual analysis published this week by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).
The New Orleans-Metairie metro area added 1,000 jobs from 28,700 in 2022 to 29,700 by the end of 2023, a 3% growth.
Baton Rouge led the way among Louisiana metro areas with an 18% growth, adding 9,1000 construction jobs, from 49,200 in 2022 to 58,300 in 2023. That growth rate ranked third among the 358 metro areas reported on by the AGC. Sioux Falls, South Dakota, ranked first in 12-month percent growth at 20%, followed by Tulsa, Oklahoma, in second at 19%.
Metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) are designated by the Office of Management and Budget, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports construction employment data.
Elsewhere in Louisiana, Houma-Thibodaux increased 300 construction jobs from 5,300 to 5,600, for a growth rate of 6%; Lafayette increased 500 construction jobs from 10,900 to 11,400, for a growth rate of 5%; Shreveport-Bossier City increased 400 construction jobs from 8,200 to 8,600, for a growth rate of 5%; and Lake Charles increased 300 construction jobs from 12,500 to 12,800, for a growth rate of 2%.
Construction employment increased in 224 of 358 metro areas between December 2022 and December 2023. AGC officials noted that the industry still has nearly 400,000 unfilled positions nationwide, and likely would have added even more jobs if firms could find more qualified workers to hire. The AGC recently launched a “Construction is Essential Workforce Campaign” and “Culture of Care” initiative to both help fill the labor void and retain current workers.
“Even more metro areas would have added workers if they were available,” said Ken Simonson, AGC chief economist. “But there were 374,000 job openings in construction at the end of December according to a separate government report, illustrating the difficulty contractors face in filling positions.”

The New Orleans Culture⚜️
RealEstate New Orleans
Rex (founded 1872) is a New Orleans Carnival Krewe which stages one of the city's most celebrated parades on Mardi Gras Day. Rex is Latin for "King", and Rex reigns as "The King of Carnival".
In addition to its famous parade, the Rex Organization also holds a private ball for its membership and invited guests on Mardi Gras night. In the 1950s, this ball made headlines when the Duke and Duchess of Windsor bowed down to Rex and the Queen of Carnival.
Pre Hurricane Katrina, the Rex ball was held on one side of the Municipal Auditorium, while on the other half of the building at the same time, the Mistick Krewe (the oldest krewe), holds its ball and was a more veiled affair.
Since Hurricane Katrina, the organizations have held their balls in the Sheraton and Marriott Hotels downtown. The rich tradition that Comus, ruler of the Mistick Krewe, extends an invitation to Rex and his queen to join him and his consort at the ball of the Mistick Krewe has been on public display on Canal Street, where a red carpet is rolled out. The court of The Rex Parade joins by invitation that of the senior krewe and the event is called The Meeting of the Courts, then when the monarchs have all made their exits, the Captain of the Mistick Krewe closes the curtain on the Carnival season. This event is televised live locally (and to selected areas outside of the city) – and many New Orleanians stay up to watch despite their weariness – until the very end.
Rex, 2024 will be John Menge Eastman and Queen of Carnival Elizabeth Brent Montgomery

Column written by the illustrious Chris Rose to mark the first Mardi Gras after Katrina and revisited in “One Dead In The Attic”, a collection of columns written by Mr. Rose post Katrina…
“To encapsulate the notion of Mardi Gras as nothing more than a big drunk is to take the simple and stupid way out, and I, for one, am getting tired of staying stuck on simple and stupid.
Mardi Gras is not a parade. Mardi Gras is not girls flashing on French Quarter balconies. Mardi Gras is not an alcoholic binge.
Mardi Gras is bars and restaurants changing out all the CD's in their jukeboxes to Professor Longhair and the Neville Brothers, and it is annual front-porch crawfish boils hours before the parades so your stomach and attitude reach a state of grace, and it is returning to the same street corner, year after year, and standing next to the same people, year after year--people whose names you may or may not even know but you've watched their kids grow up in this public tableau and when they're not there, you wonder: Where are those guys this year?
It is dressing your dog in a stupid costume and cheering when the marching bands go crazy and clapping and saluting the military bands when they crisply snap to.
Now that part, more than ever.
It's mad piano professors converging on our city from all over the world and banging the 88's until dawn and laughing at the hairy-shouldered men in dresses too tight and stalking the Indians under Claiborne overpass and thrilling the years you find them and lamenting the years you don't and promising yourself you will next year.
It's wearing frightful color combination in public and rolling your eyes at the guy in your office who--like clockwork, year after year--denies that he got the baby in the king cake and now someone else has to pony up the ten bucks for the next one.
Mardi Gras is the love of life. It is the harmonic convergence of our food, our music, our creativity, our eccentricity, our neighborhoods, and our joy of living. All at once.”

The Saints finally have their new offensive coordinator, striking a deal with Klint Kubiak
BY LUKE JOHNSON
The news is finally official: The New Orleans Saints have hired Klint Kubiak to be their next offensive coordinator.
New Orleans and Kubiak have been linked for a week, but Kubiak was still serving in his role as passing-game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers as they prepared for Super Bowl LVIII. A day after the 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Saints agreed to a contract with Kubiak, according to an NFL media report.
Kubiak takes the reins of a Saints offense that is taking its most dramatic turn away from the Sean Payton era since Payton stepped down following the 2021 season.

What does "efflorescence" mean?
The fear of public speaking
The state or a period of flowering
A sudden feeling of sadness
The study of ancient ruins
What does "efflorescence" mean?
The state or a period of flowering
efflorescence Pronunciation: ɛˌflɒrəˈsɛns
Definition: the state or a period of flowering; a period of flourishing or blooming
Origin: from Latin efflorescere, meaning "to blossom out," from ef- (out) + florescere (to begin to bloom), from flos (flower)
Example: The garden was a beautiful efflorescence of colors in the springtime.
Efflorescence is a term used to describe the state or period of flowering. It is a moment of time when something is at its peak, whether it be a flower, a relationship, or a business. It is a time of flourishing, when everything is in full bloom and thriving. Efflorescence is a moment of beauty that can be short-lived, but it is also a reminder to enjoy the present moment and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. It is a time to revel in the splendor of life and all the opportunities that come with it.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, Feb 12
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL PLUM PUDDING DAY
Also known as Christmas pudding, National Plum Pudding Day celebrates a traditional holiday dessert. On February 12th, learn about this tasty treat with an interesting history.
Plum pudding is made by steaming or boiling and the pudding is usually served during the holiday season. Interestingly, many of the recipes don't even contain any plums. One explanation given is that during the 17th century, plums were referred to as raisins or other fruits.
The name Christmas pudding is first recorded in 1858 in a novel by Anthony Trollope.
Plum pudding is usually made up of nutmeg, raisins, nuts, apples, cinnamon, and dates, along with other ingredients. In England, traditionally every person in the home holds onto the wooden spoon together to help stir the batter. While they are stirring, they also make a wish! Plum pudding has also been known to be called plum duff.

Grammar Gurus: The Peculiar Rules of the English Language
The Land of Grammar Gurus
Welcome to the world of Grammar Gurus! In this realm, words are not just mere symbols used to communicate, but they are a piece of art, a puzzle, a challenge, and often a source of amusement. Here, we don't merely abide by the rules. We explore them, question them, and sometimes even get amused by them. Let's dive into some of the peculiar rules of the English language that make it intriguing and humorous at the same time.
The Odd One out: 'I' Before 'E' Except After 'C'
One of the most popular grammar rules that we all have come across at some point is the 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'. This rule suggests that in words, 'i' often precedes 'e', unless they follow 'c'. Words like 'believe', 'field', 'piece' follow this rule. So, you would assume that this rule is universal, right? Well, not quite! Welcome to the peculiarities of English language grammar where there are more exceptions than rules. Words like 'science', 'sufficient', 'weird' blatantly defy this rule. So, now you know why English is often termed a funny language.
The Plural of Goose but Not of Moose
In English, the plural of 'goose' is 'geese'. But wait! The plural of 'moose' is not 'meese'. It's 'moose', itself. This strange inconsistency has puzzled language learners for years. This is because 'goose' comes from an Old English word, which used a different system of making plurals. On the other hand, 'moose' is a Native American word, incorporated into English, and it doesn't follow the same rule.
The Rule of Silent 'K'
Ever wondered why there's a silent 'k' in words like 'knee', 'knife', or 'knight'? This peculiarity is due to history and phonetics. Earlier, the 'k' in these words was not silent. It was pronounced along with the following consonant. However, over time, the pronunciation changed, but the spelling remained the same, giving us the silent 'k'.
The Mysterious 'ough'
The 'ough' is perhaps one of the most perplexing combinations in English. It can be pronounced in at least eight different ways. For instance, it sounds like 'off' in 'cough', 'o' in 'though', 'oo' in 'through', and 'ou' in 'bough'. This is primarily because English borrows words from various languages, each with its own pronunciation rules.
Order of Adjectives
In English, the order of adjectives before a noun usually follows a specific pattern. It's typically - quantity, quality, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, and purpose. For instance, we say "six small old round red Italian leather armchairs" and not "Italian six leather red old round small armchairs". Altering this order might sound strange to a native speaker, although the meaning doesn't change.
The Unusual Plurals
English features several irregular plurals, which can be baffling for learners. For example, the plural of 'man' is 'men', 'tooth' becomes 'teeth', and 'mouse' turns into 'mice'. However, 'human' doesn't change to 'humen', and 'house' doesn't become 'hice'. This is because these words have retained their plurals from Old English, which used different methods of plural formation.
These peculiarities make the English language a labyrinth of rules and exceptions. However, they also add charm and character to the language, making the journey of learning exciting and engaging. So, the next time you stumble upon a strange grammar rule, remember that you are not alone. The world of Grammar Gurus always welcomes you with another twist in the tale.

1929: Streetcar Strike
On the first day of July 1929 the city of New Orleans nearly came to a standstill when more than 1,000 streetcar workers, mostly motormen and conductors, went on strike. The highly contentious and divisive work stoppage lingered on for four months. This was the primary form of transportation for most New Orleanians.
The scene below was captured during the strike by an unattributed photographer. The caption on the back of the photograph reads:
“A series of tumultuous riots in which two striking carmen were seriously wounded by bullets and scores of other persons were less seriously hurt, marked the attempt of the New Orleans Public Service to resume street car service and stirred all New Orleans to a pitch of tense excitement. The riot reached a climax when strikers and their sympathizers wrecked several of the public service buildings and set fire to a trolley.”
By the time replacement workers (scabs) were brought in from out of town by New Orleans Public Service (NOPSI), sentiment shifted in favor of the strikers. One such expression of support came from Clovis and Bennie Martin who operated Martin's Coffee Stand and Restaurant on North Peters and Ursuline Streets who offered free sandwiches to striking workers. These sandwiches came to be known as "poor boys" or more colloquially "po'boys."

Posted this a loooooong time ago, many years, perhaps a couple of decades. Canal Street at night, with all the neon, in 1955. Can't remember the name right now, but it was the cover of a Swiss magazine, I believe. If I can find the correct name, shall post it here. This is a lighter copy of the original so it can be seen better on the computer

The Original Northside Skull and Bone Gang
The Northside Skull and Bone Gang is ready to roll out the carnival spirit on Mardi Gras morning, 5am at 1924 Bayou Road. We are proud and humbled to continue this old Afro-Créole/ African tradition of masking skeleton on Carnival Day. To clear up a bit of confusion in recent years especially in social media. We are an all-male group of men and boys that share African heritage. The seven ladies dressed in white or red, or red and black that have shown up at our procession many times, are not a part of our group or tradition.
We pay homage to all of those that have passed on to the ancestral realm and celebrate carnival, while bringing social warnings about things that are detrimental to our communities.
We look forward to sharing peace, blessing and love with everyone on Mardi Gras Day.
WAKE UP BEFORE IT BE TOO LATE!!!

Uptown Square
200 Broadway Street at the River
Directions and Parking Tips
The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.
RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.
From I-10
From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

The Covington Lions Club parade, followed by the Krewe of Bogue Falaya parade, rolls on Mardi Gras day this Tuesday, February 13th, at 10 a.m. in Covington! Roads close at 9 a.m., so be sure to get to your spot early.
Take a look at the following changes, suggestions, and reminders, and help us keep Mardi Gras in Covington a safe and family-friendly event:
Due to the combined length of the parades, they will not loop back through downtown for a second run. They will instead turn left onto Jefferson Avenue from 23rd Avenue and return to the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center staging area.
Vehicles cannot begin parking along the parade route before February 11th at 10 p.m. (36 hours before the parade) and must be removed before February 14th at 1 p.m. (24 hours after the parade). Parking cannot cause a safety hazard. You must have the property owner's permission if you park on private property.
On Jefferson Avenue, between 21st Avenue and 15th Avenue (near William Pitcher Junior High and St. Peter's Church), all vehicles, reviewing stands, tents, or trailers must be at least 8 feet from the road's edge.
Absolutely no driving on the parade route once it is closed.
The City is placing port-o-lets along the parade route. There should be a pair within a couple of blocks from everyone.
Public Works will have trash boxes set along the parade route. Each box will have an extra bag or two folded over the lip of the box. Once a bag is full, we're looking for a few Good Samaritans to remove the full bag, set it near the box, and insert a new bag.
Underage drinking will not be tolerated.
Rowdy or obnoxious behavior, fighting, or nudity will not be tolerated. This includes profanity or loud music with profanity.
Do not throw objects or interfere with participants in the parade.
In the interest of public safety, we would like to remind everyone to refrain from operating small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS), commonly referred to as drones, above large groups of people. The parade route has been designated a "police cordon" by the deployment of barricades and other structures designed to safeguard the well-being of those in attendance. Operating a drone within or above this protected area without prior authorization is not only illegal according to Louisiana Revised Statute 14:108, but also dangerous, as public safety services will be operating sUAS in the area. Violators of this statute will be subject to legal consequences as prescribed by law.
Only city-approved vendors with proper permits are allowed to sell along the parade route.
We want everyone to enjoy Mardi Gras in our wonderful city and ask that you assist us in providing a safe and respectful experience for all.
After the parade, join us at the Covington Trailhead for the Carnival in Covington after party from 1 p.m. till 4 p.m. for music, food trucks, and entertainment for the kids!

For instance, almost every month’s Full Moon boasts a name sourced from Native American, Colonial American, or other North American traditions, with their titles mirroring seasonal shifts and nature’s events.
Wolf Moon (January): Inspired by the cries of hungry wolves.
Snow Moon (February): A nod to the month’s often heavy snowfall.
Worm Moon (March): Named after the earthworms that signal thawing grounds.
Pink Moon (April): In honor of the blossoming pink wildflowers.
Related: How to see the eclipse in April
Flower Moon (May): Celebrating the bloom of flowers.
Strawberry Moon (June): Marks the prime strawberry harvest season.
Buck Moon (July): Recognizing the new antlers on bucks.
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

Errol Laborde’s Columns!
When Rex Met Zulu Explains Real Life Stories
That Could Happen Only in New Orleans
METAIRIE – Errol Laborde, author of a new book of his columns titled When Rex Met Zulu, will discuss it at 7 p.m., Monday, March 4, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
This event is free of charge and open to the public.
In chapters ranging from food and drink to history and ware, this book shares real life stories that could happen only in New Orleans. Errol Laborde was the force behind the now-beloved tradition of Zulu meeting Rex at Spanish Plaza on Lundi Gras before a loud, excited crowd on the eve of Fat Tuesday. He tells that origin story ere, along with other vignettes adapted from his national award-winning Streetcar column in New Orleans Magazine.
Errol Laborde, the editor of New Orleans Magazine, has won more than 25 New Orleans Press Club Awards for outstanding journalism since 1972. He is also the founding president and a current board member of the annual Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
