NATIONAL KITTEN DAY JULY 10
National Kitten Day on July 10th purrfectly celebrates the cuddly warmth of a kitty. The miniature fur balls of energy snuggle their way into our hearts with no effort at all. Within a flick of their tiny ears, we’re in love.
The day aims to remind us that while kittens are well equipped to find their way into our hearts, many don’t find homes. They’re abandoned at shelters, on the side of the road or wild and feral. Spaying and neutering our pets, including our cats, is vital to their health and keeping the stray population down.
Another goal of awareness campaigns like this one is to encourage adoptions. Instead of purchasing a kitten from a pet store, adopt from a shelter. Many kittens are born in shelters. While their ages may vary, all kittens do become cats.
Adoption Tips
Follow the shelter’s guidelines and keep these tips in mind when adopting:
- There’s an application process. Read through it and understand it. The guidelines are for the safety of the animals, the employees, and you.
- Ask questions. It’s important there’s an understanding between you and the shelter. Most shelters have volunteers and paid employees. However, they work on a very tight budget. Please don’t expect any special accommodations.
- A good shelter will place the interests of the animal first. They want the cat to have a successful placement. Some animals have anxiety while others get along with anyone and every type of animal.
- Consider the size of your home and where you live – an apartment or house.
- Who lives with you? That includes people and pets – does everyone get along and does anyone have allergies?
- How much time do you have for a pet?
- So you’ve spotted the kitten for you. Be sure to make several visits to the shelter. Play with the kitten. Spend time grooming them. See how the kitten reacts to other cats. Learn the kitten’s behavior.
Maybe Fuzzy Bear has health issues or doesn’t get along with children. Perhaps another kitten gets along better with dogs. All these factors will be considered on your application.

PAUL SKENES & DYLAN CREWS MAKE HISTORY
The first pair of teammates in MLB Draft history to go 1-2
The pick is in. #LSU superstar RHP Paul Skenes has been selected No. 1 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Skenes took Baton Rouge by storm during his lone season down South, breaking the SEC single-season strikeout record (209).
Dylan Crews was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft on Sunday — after Paul Skenes was taken #1 overall earlier in the round.
Crews was taken by the Washington Nationals with the #2 overall pick of the first round.
This is the first time in the common MLB Draft era that two players from the same school were taken first and second.
Crews was named the top player in college baseball in 2023 by winning the Golden Spikes Award, after hitting .426 at the plate and reaching base in every game of the season.
LSU had a bit of a wait before it saw its third College World Series hero go off the board in the MLB Draft, but Ty Floyd will make his new home with the Cincinnati Reds after being picked No. 38 overall.
The right-hander was snagged during the competitive balance round, marking a bit of a slide for Floyd after being projected as a possible first-rounder.
Floyd was overshadowed by LSU ace Paul Skenes much of the year, but that didn't take away from a 7-0 regular season. It was also Floyd who put out a 17-strikeout performance to open the title series against Florida, a mark that tied the CWS record for a 9-inning game.

City of New Orleans Provides Update on New Orleans Police Superintendent Search
NEW ORLEANS — In March, the Cantrell Administration engaged the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) to conduct a national search for the next Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD). The Superintendent position holds significant importance for the community, and selecting the right candidate is vital to ensuring our residents’ and visitors’ safety, security and well-being.
IACP, in cooperation with the City of New Orleans, community leaders and stakeholders, worked to define the qualifications of the ideal Superintendent candidate through direct engagement with residents, job analysis, an evaluation of the policing environment and feedback from NOPD employees. To gather community input at an early stage of the process, IACP administered community surveys and conducted community meetings in each Council District, focus group interviews and individual interviews with City Council members and stakeholders. A strong partnership between law enforcement and the community is essential for fostering trust, promoting collaboration and building a safer city.
Once the candidate profile was finalized, IACP developed a recruitment brochure that described the position and provided an overview of the NOPD and information about the city. The recruitment brochure and associated marketing campaign were designed to elicit responses from the most qualified applicants nationwide. The application period opened June 6 and closed June 23. The job posting asked for applications to be sent directly to IACP.
Thirty-three candidates applied for the Superintendent position. Following a thorough evaluation by IACP, including resume review, internet screening and a virtual structured interview, six candidates were recommended by IACP to be considered as semi-finalists. The semi-finalists will participate in a two-day Assessment Center on July 20-21 in New Orleans. The Assessment Center will allow IACP to evaluate the semi-finalists based on essential competencies required for effective police agency leadership. City public safety personnel and external stakeholders will participate in the interview process at the Assessment Center to contribute a local perspective.
After the conclusion of the Assessment Center, IACP will assess each candidate’s performance throughout the evaluation process and recommend candidates to be considered as finalists. Each finalist will interview with Mayor Cantrell and other senior members of the administration. Once a candidate has been selected, the appointee will appear before the City Council for the confirmation process.
The Cantrell Administration appreciates the IACP and all those that provided vital feedback in the process of the search for the City’s next Superintendent, and we look forward to concluding the search in the coming weeks.

Combative
What does "pugnacious" mean?
Combative
pugnacious /pʌɡˈneɪʃəs/
Definition: having a quarrelsome or aggressive nature; eager or quick to argue, fight or quarrel.
Origin: The word "pugnacious" comes from the Latin word "pugnare" which means "to fight".
Example: Despite his small size, the pugnacious boxer won the fight by knockout.
Combative is a synonym for "pugnacious". It refers to a person who is ready and willing to fight or argue. A combative person enters into a conflict with a confrontational attitude and is not afraid to use force, both physical and verbal, to assert their dominance. This trait can be useful in certain situations, such as sports or negotiations, but in everyday life, it can alienate others and lead to unnecessary conflicts. A combative attitude can also be a sign of insecurity or a lack of control over one's emotions. It is important to recognize the difference between standing up for oneself and being unnecessarily combative.

Monday, July 10, 7 pm – Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Robert Browning, and the Victorian Interest in Psychology
This lecture will cover the English Victorian poets Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning and how some of their most famous poems demonstrate an increasing fascination with the human psyche during the 19th century. Attendees will explore how Tennyson's and Browning's Victorian-era works address how loss, grief, depression, and even sociopathy might manifest in the minds of their poetic speakers.
Monday, August 21, 7 pm - Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, and the English Sonnet Tradition
This lecture will cover the English Victorian poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti and their contributions to the English sonnet tradition. Attendees will explore how Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and Rossetti's Monna Innominata are groundbreaking sonnet sequences which offer women's voices responding to and reimagining the sonnet traditions named for Petrarch and Shakespeare.
Dr. Cognevich has a master's in English literature from the University of New Orleans and a doctoral degree in English literature from Louisiana State University. She taught English literature and writing for more than a decade. Her scholarly specialties include Romantic and Victorian poetry. Observed each year on July 9th, National Sugar Cookie Day honors the ever-popular and delicious sugar cookie.
A holiday favorite and very easy to make, sugar cookies disappear quickly once they come out of the oven. Most sugar cookies include sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla, and either baking powder or baking soda. While most people have the ingredients on hand at all times, some of the ingredients should be fresh for the best outcome. Children enjoy baking and decorating anytime someone makes a batch of sugar cookies.
The sugar cookie is believed to have originated in the mid-1700s in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. German Protestant settlers created a round, crumbly and buttery cookie that came to be known as the Nazareth Cookie.
Today, sugar cookie making and decorating has become an art form for kids and adults alike. Starting with the shape of the cookie, the dough is formed with either a cookie cutter or other methods of cutting and shaping the dough. Once the cookie is baked, the cookie artist adds colored frosting or icing. Sprinkles, edible glitter, colored sugars, and additional details may be added. Some cookies receive so much detail, it’s almost a shame to eat them.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

Summer League Pelicans to Las Vegas
BY CHRISTIAN CLARK
The New Orleans Pelicans will begin their NBA Summer League schedule
The Pelicans’ five-game slate in Las Vegas will give Dyson Daniels, E.J. Liddell and other players a chance to get game action under their belts before training camp begins in September.
Daniels, the No. 8 pick in the 2022 draft, and Liddell, the 41st pick, are two of the returnees from last year’s Summer League squad. Karlo Matkovic, a Croatian center who was a late second-round pick in 2022, and Dereon Seabron, a speedy guard who spent last season on a two-way deal, are the other two.
Jordan Hawkins, the No. 14 pick in last month’s draft, will also suit up for New Orleans' Summer League squad. General manager Trajan Langdon said he believed Hawkins was “the best shooter in the draft" after the Pelicans chose him with their only pick of the night.
Pelicans assistant Casey Hill will coach the Summer League team. Hill is going into his fourth season with the Pelicans. He came aboard while Stan Van Gundy was in charge, and he has remained with the team since Willie Green took over.
Schedule
- Tuesday, July 11: Pelicans vs. Suns, 7 p.m., ESPN2
- Thursday, July 13: Pelicans vs. Hornets, 6:30 p.m. NBA TV
- Saturday July 15 or Sunday July 16: Pelicans vs. TBD, TBD

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

Saturday Writers’ Clinic!
“Editing” and “Writing the Unsaid”
METAIRIE, LA – Local authors and educators Erica Welter and Stacy Balkun will be featured in the July Saturday Writers’ Clinic beginning at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, July 15, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
This event is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.
9:30 a.m., Saturday, July 15
Erica Welter – “The Essence of Editing”
According to Erica Welter, “editing is an essential part of the writing process. Quality editing refines a manuscript to ensure the writer’s voice is clear, coherent, and effective. Poor editing may result in a weak, muddled narrative, which wastes the time and energy of both readers and writers.” In this session, Welter will present the most common errors made during the editing process so writers can learn to edit more effectively.
Erica Welter holds a master’s degree in English with a concentration in Publishing from Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond. She is an author, a professional editor, and a college English tutor. She is the former executive editor of Southeastern’s scholarly journal, The Pick, and her poetry appears in Across the Margin and the Manchac Review. She is editing her debut novel.
11 a.m., Saturday, July 15
Stacey Balkun– “Reflections and Omissions: Writing With the Unsaid”
“In a field, I am the absence of field,” writes Mark Strand, reminding us that not all absence is nothingness. As an instrument must have a resonating chamber in order to sing, texts too depend on empty space. This craft talk will focus on what can be found in the white space of a text: how can omissions render a new narrative? How can reflection and recursion pronounce and echo? Turning to poets who have mastered the unsaid, this talk will explore strategies to suspend logic, narrative, and even syntax in favor of lyric and gesture.
Stacey Balkun is the author of Sweetbitter and co-editor of Fiolet & Wing: An Anthology of Domestic Fabulism Poetry. Winner of the 2019 New South Writing Contest, her work has appeared in Best New Poets, Mississippi Review, Pleiades, and several other anthologies and journals. Balkun holds a master’s degree from Fresno State and teaches online at The Poetry Barn and The Loft. She is the coordinator for the Graduate and Undergraduate English programs at the University of New Orleans.

An official announcement by the team with practice times and availability to the public is expected to be made at a later date.

BREES DREAM FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NOLA PICKLEBALL FEST
Annual event to be held at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to serve as a major fundraiser for the Brees Dream Foundation
Brittany and Drew Brees announced today the creation of The NOLA Pickleball Fest, an annual event benefiting the Brees Dream Foundation. The inaugural event will be held August 10-13, 2023, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Brees and the staff of the Brees Dream Foundation have been working closely with local tourism leaders at the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and New Orleans & Company, as well as national companies Joola and The Kitchen, to organize all aspects of the event.
“Brittany and I could not be more excited to bring the first annual NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans,” says Drew Brees. Combining one of the fastest growing and most enjoyable sports alongside a city that knows how to host a party will make this one of the premier events of the summer. It will be great food, music, events, and plenty of pickleball all inside the Convention Center, as we crown amateur champions and raise proceeds for the Brees Dream Foundation that will go towards our ongoing efforts in New Orleans.”
The NOLA Pickleball Fest (“The NOLA”) benefitting the Brees Dream Foundation is a unique, festival-style pickleball tournament featuring 24 tournament quality PickleRoll courts, live music, a celebrity exhibition match featuring Drew Brees, VIP experiences and much more. The NOLA will have three divisions of round robin play: women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles for skill levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0+. There are two brackets to compete in: Open and 40 yrs. old and over. Featured matches will be played on a center court with grandstand seating as well as Kern Studio Mardi Gras floats for VIP viewing. Join us for an unforgettable experience and the ultimate pickleball party. To sign up or for more information, visit www.drewbrees.com.
“As pickleball participation continues to skyrocket, we’re honored and excited to be working with Drew and his team to create an annual pickleball festival that creates tourism for a higher purpose,” said Jay Cicero, President/CEO of the Sports Foundation. “The Brees Dream Foundation will distribute funds raised from the event to partner charitable organizations along the Gulf Coast. Given the combination of the sport’s popularity and charitable aspect of NOLA Pickleball Fest, it will surely be a hit among amateur and seasoned Pickleball players alike.”
“When it comes to sports, New Orleans is known for hosting iconic championship moments. With our singular, authentic culture and welcoming people, 26,0000 hotel rooms within two miles of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and unmatched hospitality, New Orleans is truly Built to Host,” said Walter J. Leger III, President & CEO of New Orleans & Company, the official destination sales, and marketing organization for the New Orleans tourism industry. “Crowds have always been drawn to New Orleans for sporting events of all types and sizes and now it is an honor to add the annual NOLA Pickleball Fest. This event will not only provide a critical summertime tourism boost for the New Orleans economy, but also help the entire community served by the Brees Dream Foundation.”
“The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is delighted to welcome the inaugural NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans this August,” said Convention Center President Michael J. Sawaya. “Our involvement with NOLA Pickleball supports our mission to host events that positively impact the local economy. With the passion of the Brees Dream Foundation and the diligent support of local tourism leaders, there is no doubt the tournament will grow into the best tournament in the nation and benefit our community for years to come.”
Pickleball originated in the Pacific Northwest in the 1960s and combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is the fastest-growing sport in the United States with annual increases of millions of people playing, according to a 2023 participation report by the Association of Pickleball Professionals.
Registration for the tournament opens in early June. To register to play, visit www.drewbrees.com. To volunteer, visit www.gnosports.com/volunteer.

Friday Night Wine School - Provence, So Much More than Rosé
Friday, July 28, 2023, New
Just back from my most recent trip to Provence, I'm always inspired to educate people on the many wine treasures the region has to offer. Provence has the quintessential Mediterranean climate - warm sunny days followed by cool nights with very little rain during the summer months. Mistral winds and sea breezes keep the humidity level to an almost arid dryness making it the ideal climate for grape growing. While everyone knows Provence for its lovely rosé, the refreshing whites and full-bodied reds are often overlooked. Tonight we'll feature wines from some of our favorite producers on the Cote d'Azur including one that we visited on our recent trip. Use this link to sign up for the event, Provence

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
