NATIONAL TEQUILA DAY | JULY 24

On July 24th, commemorate National Tequila Day with a little lime and salt. Mix up a Margarita, Paloma, or a Mamasita to celebrate the day! People have been making Tequila for centuries, and it was once known as mezcal wine.

In fact, Tequila is mezcal, but mezcal isn’t Tequila. That’s because Tequila is distilled from a specific type of agave plant. Also, the law protects its production. Take a sip, and we’ll travel into Tequila’s history.

Tequila History

It all started around the 16th century. Cortez arrived on the North American continent with his Spanish conquistadors. They didn’t care much for the fermented mezcal wine served to them. However, the Spanish introduced copper stills to the population. Enter the distilling process.

Now, our story takes us to Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. Located in a valley west of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico, the town made a name for themselves by distilling Blue Agave. Even though a variety of succulents in Mexico produce mezcal, only one delivers the nectar to distill Tequila. Blue Agave grows in the highland region. Indeed, the unique growing conditions contribute to a larger size and sweeter tasting agave. In contrast, agave grown in the lowland regions taste and smell more herbal.

In Mexico, the law protects the production of Tequila. The rule states Tequila is only Tequila if it is made within Jalisco. Additionally, the law limits production to regions in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. However, the same ingredients distilled anywhere else cannot be labeled Tequila.

Interestingly, many names in the tequila business today were the very first commercial producers of Tequila. For example, José Antonio Cuervo held the first license for making the favored beverage. He kept a well-known company, too. Two other names include Don Cenobio Sauza and Félix López, whose businesses continue in some form today.

Equally enjoyed in cocktails such as the margarita or tequila sunrise, connoisseurs savor a good tequila like a good whiskey. As a result, savvy drinkers experience the smooth renaissance of Tequila. Surprisingly, it’s not the firewater they remember from their youth.

The New Orleans Saints will begin their 57th NFL season on July 24 when the team's veteran players report to training camp at the team’s training facility in Metairie, multiple sources said this week.

The team's rookies will report the previous week.

An official announcement by the team with practice times and availability to the public is expected to be made at a later date.

The Saints will conduct their official conditioning test July 25 and conduct noncontact practices in jerseys and helmets for the next two days, as mandated by the NFL’s official ramp-up period. The team will practice in helmets and shells on July 28-29 and move to full pads on July 31 after an off day in the schedule.

In Week 2 of their exhibition schedule, the Saints will conduct joint practices against the Los Angeles Chargers. The workouts will be Aug. 17-18 at the Chargers training camp site in Costa Mesa, California.

The Saints will practice against the Houston Texans from Aug. 24-25 in Metairie before the teams’ final preseason game on Aug. 27. These practices will not be open to the public.

The Saints will reduce their roster to the regular-season maximum of 53 players on Aug. 29.

This will be the seventh consecutive year that the Saints have held training camp in Metairie. They held camp in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, from 2014-17 and at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, from 2006-08.

26 items your pantry needs before an emergency, plus 11 basics before a storm hits the Gulf

While hurricanes can bring massive uncertainty, the approaching storm season can become less erratic by preparing your pantry beforehand.

Sandra May, a LSU AgCenter curriculum coordinator, says gathering a two-week supply of food is recommended when a storm is approaching.

"We always encourage people not to (prepare) at the last minute, when it's too late and the shelves are empty," May said.

What to put in a hurricane prep kit: Know the essentials

For the basics, May recommends a gallon of water per day per person to brush your teeth, flush the toilet and to drink.

"Drinking water is No. 1 to keep hydrated," she said. "Water is the key."

Check expiration dates and the condition of canned goods already in the pantry and have a supply of over-the-counter and prescription medication. She also recommends buying bandages, antiseptic, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide to prepare.

If you're without heat or electricity, a hot plate can be helpful for cooking certain items, or buy single-serve items to avoid leftovers. Buy disposable plates, cups and utensils so you don't have to use your water supply to wash dishes. Keep or buy a manual can opener in case you're without electricity as well.

To keep cold items refrigerated, store them in a cold place below 40 degrees. May said that bacteria can grow in the range of temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

For families with young children, May recommends a two-week supply of formula, snacks and jarred baby food.

Don't forget pets. Keep water and food for them, too.

May provided a list of nonperishable, shelf-stable foods for a family to prepare for a hurricane.

  • Whole grain bread
  • Whole wheat crackers
  • Bagged popcorn
  • Baked and/or whole-grain chips

  • Some hard meats, such as pepperoni and hard, packaged salami

Fruit:

  • Dried fruits or fruit leather
  • 100% fruit juices in individual containers
  • Canned fruit or fruit packaged in individual containers

Vegetables:

  • Canned vegetables
  • 100% vegetable juices in individual containers
  • Canned low-sodium soups

Bananas are technically berries.Berry classification is a confusing business. People began referring to some fruits as “berries” thousands of years before scientists established their own definitions, some of which are still debated. Today, little effort is made to teach the public about what botanically constitutes a berry, so here’s a bit of help. It’s generally accepted that all berries meet three standards. First, they have a trio of distinct fleshy layers (the outer exocarp, middle mesocarp, and innermost endocarp); second, their endocarps house multiple seeds; third, berries are simple fruits, meaning they develop from flowers with a single ovary.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Is the heat index the same as the actual temperature?

Have you ever heard your weather forecaster talk about the heat index in the summer? Some people online are asking whether it's the same as the actual temperature.

We can VERIFY that it's not.

The heat index is a "measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature," the National Weather Service says. That's why forecasters sometimes provide a "feels-like" temperature that's higher than the actual air temperature during the summer months.

Though the air temperature isn’t actually hotter when the humidity is higher, it feels that way because our bodies can’t cool themselves off as effectively.

No, the heat index is not the same as the actual temperature

The heat index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

When air temperature and relative humidity increase, the “feels-like” temperature increases. For example, if the air temperature is 96 degrees and the relative humidity is 65%, the heat index – or how hot it feels – is 121 degrees.

The NWS has a heat index calculator on its website. However, heat index values are for shady locations and, if a person is exposed to direct sunlight, that “feels-like” temperature can increase by up to 15 degrees, the agency notes on its website.

The heat index is categorized as “dangerous” when feels-like temperatures reach 103 to 124 degrees. This level of heat can lead to heat cramps or heat exhaustion. Heatstroke is also a risk with prolonged exposure to heat or physical activity.

Though the air temperature isn’t actually hotter when the humidity is higher, it feels that way because our bodies can’t cool themselves off as effectively, HealthPartners explains in a blog post.

When temperatures soar in the summer, we sweat. The evaporation of those sweat droplets helps to cool down the body, according to MIT’s “Ask an Engineer” feature

Sweat evaporates quickly on dry days, meaning it carries heat away from the body faster. But, on humid days, sweat doesn’t evaporate as easily since the air is already full of water vapor.

“Sweat rests on our skin, unable to evaporate into the air,” Mary Benjamin, M.D., an emergency medicine doctor in Minnesota, told HealthPartners. “As a result, our bodies continue to sweat and sweat – but feel no relief. Ultimately, high humidity throws the body into overdrive to cool itself.”

To keep yourself safe in the heat and humidity, HealthPartners recommends staying hydrated by drinking fluids before you get thirsty, easing up on strenuous outdoor activities, wearing loose-fitting and breathable clothing, and taking breaks in the air conditioning.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The suspenseful sequel to The Murder of Mr. Wickham, which sees Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney reunited, and with another mystery to solve: the dreadful poisoning of the scoundrel Willoughby’s new wife.

Catherine and Henry Tilney of Northanger Abbey are not entirely pleased to be sending their eligible young daughter Juliet out into the world again: the last house party she attended, at the home of the Knightleys, involved a murder—which Juliet helped solve. Particularly concerning is that she intends to visit her new friend Marianne Brandon, who’s returned home to Devonshire shrouded in fresh scandal—made more potent by the news that her former suitor, the rakish Mr. Willoughby, intends to take up residence at his local estate with his new bride.

Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley are thrilled that their eldest son, Jonathan—who, like his father, has not always been the most socially adept—has been invited to stay with his former schoolmate, John Willoughby. Jonathan himself is decidedly less taken with the notion of having to spend extended time under the roof of his old bully, but that all changes when he finds himself reunited with his fellow amateur sleuth, the radiant Miss Tilney. And when shortly thereafter, Willoughby’s new wife—whom he married for her fortune—dies horribly at the party meant to welcome her to town.

With rumors flying and Marianne—known to be both unstable and previously jilted by the dead woman’s newly made widower—under increased suspicion, Jonathan and Juliet must team up once more to uncover the murderer. But as they collect clues and close in on suspects, eerie incidents suggest that the killer may strike again, and that the pair are in far graver danger than they or their families could imagine.

First, they have a trio of distinct fleshy layers (the outer exocarp, middle mesocarp, and innermost endocarp); second, their endocarps house multiple seeds; third, berries are simple fruits, meaning they develop from flowers with a single ovary.

Blueberries and cranberries are true berries, as their names imply. Other berries may surprise you: avocados, eggplants, grapes, guava, kiwis, papayas, peppers, pomegranates, and tomatoes are all — botanically speaking — berries. Bananas are berries, too, since they meet all three requirements. The exocarp of a banana is its peel, while the mesocarp is the creamy middle surrounding the seedy, also-edible endocarp. Now let’s parse what can constitute a non-berry (definitions sometimes differ). Apricots, cherries, dates, nectarines, peaches, and plums are drupes — simple fruits that have a hard endocarp comprising one seed (or, as we laypersons call it, a pit). Apples, pears, and quince are pomes, simple fruits that receive their own category owing to their core of small seeds and tough skin. With seeds growing on the outside, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries are, confusingly given their names, neither berries nor simple fruits. Instead, they are called aggregate fruits, because they grow from multiple ovaries of the same flower. No matter what you call them, fruits are still delicious enough to be nicknamed “nature's candy.”

NATIONAL DRIVE-THRU DAY | JULY 24

National Drive-Thru Day on July 24th recognizes an innovation conveniently going strong today. The drive-thru reached its iconic zenith in the 1950s but stayed strong through the 60s, 70s and beyond. People have enjoyed this service since the 1930s.

The ease of dropping off or picking up an item without getting out of the car may be something we take for granted. Of course, many studies point to the benefits and drawbacks associated with using the drive-thru.

The first and most obvious that comes to mind is the ease of dropping off or picking up and item. Whether its the mail, a prescription or the dry cleaning, pulling up to a window or a slot and passing the article through is eminently easier than even finding a parking spot. Then, if we have children, we collect our children, our item and wait in line. After waiting, we usually search for our parking spot while juggling children and once again pile them back into the car. When multiple stops are involved, repeat the previous steps. Check the ease of use box.

Secondly, many people think the drive-thru is faster. While that might be true at some locations, it will depend on the type of service, time of day, and where you are located. For example, a long line in the drive-thru at the bank may mean no waiting inside. The same may also be true at your favorite fast-food restaurant. However, if you only need to drop off a letter at the post office, use the drive-up option.

Finally, accuracy tops the list of some drive-thru specialists. Again, this criteria is hit or miss. Depending on the type of business, time of day and location, accuracy varies. Interestingly, in 2018, Chic-fil-A mastered this arena with 97.3% accuracy.

Did you know:

  • There are more than 211,000 fast-food restaurants in the United States.
  • The drive-thru format was pioneered in the United States for banking services.
  • Hamburgers sold for just 18 cents at some of the first drive-thru restaurants.
  • Restaurants, coffee shops, liquor stores, pharmacies, and many more services utilize drive-thrus for quick service.

William Gillette played the iconic Sherlock Holmes on stage more than 1,000 times, and it was his portrayal that may have set the persona we most associate with Sir Arthur Conan Doyal’s genius detective. Alice Ball developed the first successful treatment for Hansen’s disease. As the first African American graduate with an M.S. degree from the College of Hawaii, Ball began her career there teaching chemistry. A rather grainy photograph from 1895 showing the neutral ground on Canal Street looking toward the lake. The photographer is likely standing on the steps of the Clay statue on the Royal Street side (St. Charles Avenue opposite) near one of the starter's kiosks that is behind the lady and wagon on the left of the image. The side panels on the kiosk were for paid advertising -- these being for Lhote & Company, a millwork company located on the Old Basin Canal at Franklin and Toulouse, known for sash and door work.

On the far left is Moreau's Restaurant, then Eyrich's Bookstore, then a wig manufacturer. Just left of center is the Pickwick Club building on the corner of Carondelet Street. Across the street you can see the spire for Christ Episcopal Church.

Four streetcar lines inbound and outbound, with carriage and wagon traffic in both directions on Canal Street on both sides of the street.

Audubon Zoo guests will be able to cool off twice a day at the water park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. each day. The Cool Zoo closes every day from 1 to 2 p.m. for cleaning and maintenance.

All the fan-favorite features will be there: the alligator water slide, the spider monkey soaker, water-spitting snakes and shady spots for adults.

The Gator Run lazy river offers visitors the option to cool down by floating atop a tube along a 750-foot long course that is 3-feet deep and 10-feet wide. It also features two sand beaches and water cannons that can be used to spray other visitors as they float on down the river. It also includes showers, restrooms, lockers, outdoor seating, a private area for nursing mothers and the "Gator Bites'' concession stand.

Rafts are included in the admission price for Gator Run, and anyone shorter than 48 inches will need a life jacket supplied by Audubon Zoo.

Outside food and drinks are welcomed in both Cool Zoo and Gator Run, but the size of coolers and ice chests cannot exceed 28 quarts. Glass containers and disposable straws and lids are not permitted for the safety of the zoo's animals. Audubon may search coolers.

Get tickets

Cool Zoo tickets can be purchased online and at the zoo's front gate. Regular admission to Cool Zoo, including Gator Run, is $9 for Audubon Nature Institute Members and $12 for non-members, plus Audubon Zoo admission.

About the Exhibition

In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.

Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.

Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.

A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It was announced Tuesday, July 11, by the City of New Orleans that the Department of Public Works will auction off several cars that have been abandoned, booted, or ticketed.

City officials say the inventory of 89 vehicles was taken from public roadways after their owners left them on the side of the road.

“Abandoned vehicles in the right-of-way create safety hazards by obstructing drivers’ line of sight and limiting pedestrian access. Removing these eyesores from public spaces demonstrates our commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents throughout New Orleans,” said Sarah McLaughlin

The auction is set for Thursday, July 27 at 10200 Almonaster Avenue starting at 9 a.m. Residents who are interested in attending are encouraged to register and take a look at the inventory on the Slidell Auction website a day in advance.

Auction winners will have until Monday, July 31 to remove the vehicles or they will become subject to daily storage fees.

New Orleans residents can continue to report abandoned vehicles by calling 311.

OnPath Federal Credit Union is proud to announce their partnership and designation as the FIRST and ONLY Juntos Avanzamos nationally accredited credit union in Louisiana. This prestigious recognition is a testament to OnPath FCU's groundbreaking commitment to financial inclusion to meet the needs of the underserved, immigrant, and specifically Hispanic people in the greater New Orleans area.

Juntos Avanzamos, Spanish for Together We Advance, is a national network of 131 credit unions dedicated to serving low-income Hispanic communities and providing safe and affordable financial services to immigrant consumers. Like Juntos Avanzamos, On Path FCU believes that the contribution of immigrant and Hispanic consumers to the local and national economy is significant, although the community is often underbanked and taken advantage of by predatory lenders and other finance companies.

"The credit union mission is based on serving the underserved, and banking the underbanked," said OnPath FCU President and CEO Jared Freeman. "As our community changes, we must change with it,

if that mission is to remain at our core. We are proud to lead the way for the financial inclusion of our entire population in South Louisiana.” Freeman goes on to say "We intended to be the leader in meeting the needs of low-income & immigrant consumers in general and of the Hispanic community - in particular. This is what financial inclusion is all about, and we are focused on OnPath to lead the way."

Friday Night Wine School - Provence, So Much More than Rosé

Friday, July 28, 2023, New

Just back from my most recent trip to Provence, I'm always inspired to educate people on the many wine treasures the region has to offer. Provence has the quintessential Mediterranean climate - warm sunny days followed by cool nights with very little rain during the summer months. Mistral winds and sea breezes keep the humidity level to an almost arid dryness making it the ideal climate for grape growing. While everyone knows Provence for its lovely rosé, the refreshing whites and full-bodied reds are often overlooked. Tonight we'll feature wines from some of our favorite producers on the Cote d'Azur including one that we visited on our recent trip. Use this link to sign up for the event, Provence

Friday Night Wine School -  Price Point Challenge Blind Wine Tasting

Friday, August 4, 2023, New

We're going to have some fun tonight with a blind, price point challenge wine tasting, as we present a selection of wines without knowing their prices. We'll have you taste each wine, assess its characteristics, and then attempt to guess the price range of each wine based on its perceived quality and complexity. Here's how it will work:

Alex and Beth will choose a diverse selection of wines from different regions, grape varietals, and price points with whites, reds, rosé, maybe a sparkling or an orange...We'll have the bottles in paper bags to hide their labels and provide you with scoring sheets that allow you to rate each wine based on your overall impression and estimated price range for each wine. We'll taste each wine with no information, and then unveil the bottles and discuss the wines and producers doing the big reveal at the end. Anyone who guesses all 5 price ranges correctly will get an EXTRA $5 to apply to their wine purchase.

Come play with us! The price point challenge wine tasting is not only entertaining but also a great way to work on your wine-tasting skills and understanding of wine value. It will challenge your palates and perceptions while being fun and educational at the same time!  Go here for tickets, Price Point Challenge

Friday Night Wine School - Wines of Lebanon with James Moises

Friday, August 11, 2023, New

There is a reason that the Roman Temple of Bacchus is in Lebanon - considered one of the earliest wine-producing areas of the world, the Lebanese, at that time the Phoenicians, have been making wine in the region since 5000 BC. They enjoyed a very vibrant and productive wine culture that fueled the local economy through travel and trade until Ottoman rule began in 1516. Under Sharia law, wine consumption and production were forbidden and the once prolific region became a wine desert for some 350 years. In 1857 a group of Jesuit priests living in the area asked to plant vines to make wine for ceremonial purposes. Their plantings of Cinsault marked the beginning of wine production in its best terroir, the Bekaa Valley. Third-generation Lebanese American, Oregon winemaker, international wine importer and local physician, James Moises represents the largest selection of Lebanese wines in Louisiana and maybe in the US!  He just received a whole boatload of Lebanese wine (literally!) last week and he's anxious to share them with us as we discuss the main wine regions, terroir and production methods. We hope you'll join us! Get your tickets here:  Lebanon

SHREK THE MUSICAL, JR. TO MAKE BEASTLY APPEARANCE AT PLAYMAKERS THEATER

This summer, ogres, ogresses, and all manner of fairytale creatures will roam Playmakers Theater as Shrek The Musical, JR. enchants audiences. Directed by Jennifer Patterson, the delightful show proves beauty is in the eye of the beholder and is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. The show runs July 22-August 6.

“It's a big bright beautiful world as everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairy tale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance,” says Patterson. “Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.”

Assistant director for the show is Kathryn Hatch and musical director is Grier Patterson. The musical originally slated for this summer, What a Glorious Feeling, was canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. Season tickets will be honored for Shrek JR.

Performances are Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., July 29-August 6, 2023. Tickets for Shrek The Musical, JR. are $30 for adults and $15 for children and available at BonTempsTix.com.

Shrek The Musical, JR. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theater International (MTI).

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”

The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.

Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

BREES DREAM FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NOLA PICKLEBALL FEST

Annual event to be held at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to serve as a major fundraiser for the Brees Dream Foundation

Brittany and Drew Brees announced today the creation of The NOLA Pickleball Fest, an annual event benefiting the Brees Dream Foundation. The inaugural event will be held August 10-13, 2023, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Brees and the staff of the Brees Dream Foundation have been working closely with local tourism leaders at the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and New Orleans & Company, as well as national companies Joola and The Kitchen, to organize all aspects of the event.

“Brittany and I could not be more excited to bring the first annual NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans,” says Drew Brees. Combining one of the fastest growing and most enjoyable sports alongside a city that knows how to host a party will make this one of the premier events of the summer. It will be great food, music, events, and plenty of pickleball all inside the Convention Center, as we crown amateur champions and raise proceeds for the Brees Dream Foundation that will go towards our ongoing efforts in New Orleans.”

The NOLA Pickleball Fest (“The NOLA”) benefitting the Brees Dream Foundation is a unique, festival-style pickleball tournament featuring 24 tournament quality PickleRoll courts, live music, a celebrity exhibition match featuring Drew Brees, VIP experiences and much more. The NOLA will have three divisions of round robin play: women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles for skill levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0+. There are two brackets to compete in: Open and 40 yrs. old and over. Featured matches will be played on a center court with grandstand seating as well as Kern Studio Mardi Gras floats for VIP viewing. Join us for an unforgettable experience and the ultimate pickleball party. To sign up or for more information, visit www.drewbrees.com.

“As pickleball participation continues to skyrocket, we’re honored and excited to be working with Drew and his team to create an annual pickleball festival that creates tourism for a higher purpose,” said Jay Cicero, President/CEO of the Sports Foundation. “The Brees Dream Foundation will distribute funds raised from the event to partner charitable organizations along the Gulf Coast. Given the combination of the sport’s popularity and charitable aspect of NOLA Pickleball Fest, it will surely be a hit among amateur and seasoned Pickleball players alike.”

“When it comes to sports, New Orleans is known for hosting iconic championship moments. With our singular, authentic culture and welcoming people, 26,0000 hotel rooms within two miles of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and unmatched hospitality, New Orleans is truly Built to Host,” said Walter J. Leger III, President & CEO of New Orleans & Company, the official destination sales, and marketing organization for the New Orleans tourism industry. “Crowds have always been drawn to New Orleans for sporting events of all types and sizes and now it is an honor to add the annual NOLA Pickleball Fest. This event will not only provide a critical summertime tourism boost for the New Orleans economy, but also help the entire community served by the Brees Dream Foundation.”

“The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is delighted to welcome the inaugural NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans this August,” said Convention Center President Michael J. Sawaya. “Our involvement with NOLA Pickleball supports our mission to host events that positively impact the local economy. With the passion of the Brees Dream Foundation and the diligent support of local tourism leaders, there is no doubt the tournament will grow into the best tournament in the nation and benefit our community for years to come.”

Pickleball originated in the Pacific Northwest in the 1960s and combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is the fastest-growing sport in the United States with annual increases of millions of people playing, according to a 2023 participation report by the Association of Pickleball Professionals.

Registration for the tournament opens in early June. To register to play, visit www.drewbrees.com. To volunteer, visit www.gnosports.com/volunteer.

Monday, August 21, 7 pm - Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, and the English Sonnet Tradition

This lecture will cover the English Victorian poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti and their contributions to the English sonnet tradition. Attendees will explore how Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and Rossetti's Monna Innominata are groundbreaking sonnet sequences which offer women's voices responding to and reimagining the sonnet traditions named for Petrarch and Shakespeare.

Dr. Cognevich has a master's in English literature from the University of New Orleans and a doctoral degree in English literature from Louisiana State University. She taught English literature and writing for more than a decade. Her scholarly specialties include Romantic and Victorian poetry. Her doctoral thesis focused on the late-18th-century British sonnet revival and poet Charlotte Smith, who was one of William Wordsworth's early inspirations.

That part of the event will feature up-and-coming music talent and will set the stage for the main entertainment in the Superdome. Tailgate Town will also feature special college football and amateur sports spotlights, sponsor activations, and other games and activities throughout the day.

“Being asked to be part of the first ever Sugar Bowl Country Kickoff is an honor,” Brooks said in a news release. “The fun will be in getting to perform with Legends Nitty Gritty and future legend Miss Wilson in front of arguably the greatest country music fans on the planet.”

“The Sugar Bowl Committee is always looking at ways to bring first-rate entertainment that will drive tourism in Louisiana,” Sugar Bowl President Richard Briede said in a news release.

Tickets, which cost $98.95, will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, July 21, at Ticketmaster.com/GarthBrooks.

The LSU-Florida State football season opener that will kick off in Orlando on Sunday, Sept. 3, now has a start time and a TV network.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge

Story by Zack Nagy

© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation

LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.

LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.

Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).

Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.

LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.

The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.

LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
