Lafayette Reservoir Construction Update June 2026
Equipment mobilization into the park is now complete, and heavy construction equipment is in place. The crane barge is positioned at the outlet tower and is visible from most points around the Reservoir.
Upcoming Milestones:
- Tower Scaffolding: Beginning Friday, June 5, crews will begin removing external fixtures from the tower. We expect installation of visible scaffolding surrounding the outlet tower to begin the week of June 8–June 12.
- Demolition Timeline: Weather permitting, the demolition of the upper portion of the tower is scheduled to begin in late June or early July. Our contractor is finalizing the sequencing required to perform the work safely. We expect the tower portion of the project to be completed by the end of October 2026.
Visitor Access & Impact:
There are no planned vehicular closures in the month of June 2026. Rather than full vehicular closures, there will be intermittent traffic flagging at the park entrance to manage equipment and debris transport. Visitors should continue to expect delays while driving and walking inside the park.
What Visitors will Notice:
- Increased Activity on the Water: The crane barge will be the primary platform for demolition activity through the summer.
- Visible Tower Changes: Scaffolding and work platforms will fully surround the upper tower structure.
- Noise & Presence: Both the Tower Safety Upgrade and the Wastewater Collection System Improvements projects are now active concurrently through fall 2026. Visitors should expect significant construction noise and active construction crews near the Lakeside Nature Trail and barge ramp area.
- Trail Activity & Traffic Flagging: Visitors on the paved Lakeside Nature Trail will notice crews consistently moving equipment and off-hauling debris across the trail to reach the barge ramp located near the performance stage. Traffic flaggers will be stationed at both the main entrance gate and along the trail to manage these movements safely. Park visitors can expect occasional brief delays of approximately 10 to 15 minutes for both pedestrians on the trail and vehicles entering or exiting the park.
While EBMUD will work to maintain recreational access, portions of the recreation areas are active construction zones. We appreciate the public’s patience, awareness of project signage, and cooperation with temporary detours or delays at Lafayette Reservoir.
Project Context & Concurrent Activity:
Lafayette Reservoir is EBMUD property, and current activity at the site reflects both EBMUD’s Lafayette Reservoir Tower Safety Upgrade and the ongoing Wastewater Collection System Improvements project. These upgrades are essential for infrastructure improvements focused on safety, seismic reliability, and long-term reliability to ensure EBMUD can continue to manage reservoir water levels and protect the surrounding watershed.
With both projects active simultaneously through fall 2026, this is anticipated to be the peak construction footprint at Lafayette Reservoir. Fishing, hiking, and picnic use will remain open during construction, though visitors should expect changing conditions near the project sites, including an increased presence of equipment, noise, and minor delays. We appreciate the public’s cooperation as we move forward with these vital infrastructure improvements.
Project Resources:
Any project-related questions from residents or visitors can be directed to EBMUD at construction-east@ebmud.com or 510-287-2053.
