GLOBAL LOVE DAY
They say that love is the universal force that binds us all. With such a powerful impact, it makes sense to dedicate an entire day to all the positive things love brings. Global Love Day on May 1 is a day to remind humanity that anything can be achieved when we attune our minds to the frequency of unconditional love.
Unconditional love can be described as showing love without boundaries. No matter how many times people may ignore our boundaries and needs, unconditional love approaches every situation with forgiveness and understanding. Love is a force so powerful that inspires the spirit of healing and transformation. By attuning to this frequency, we can turn the tides of anything in the world that is less than love.
Unconditional love comes in different forms. Whether we show unconditional love to our small circles or share unconditional love on a national level, coming together to promote peace and love is the goal. However, unconditional love means loving ourselves just as much as loving our neighbors. Without inner love, it might not be easy to love those around you. After all, love always begins with you. Once you learn to love everything about yourself, love for those around you comes naturally.
On Global Love Day, make a conscious effort to show love to yourself. Too many times, we hide and forget to love ourselves because of past trauma, pain, and suffering. These internal feelings prevent us from realizing you are worthy of feeling loved and giving love. Take your power back and stop thinking your circumstances should define you. Now is the time to self-reflect and start making small changes. Embrace your imperfections and accept your mistakes. Changing your thinking patterns will result in changing your view of yourself.
Each morning when you wake up, spend time training your brain to love yourself. Studies show when you start your day thinking positive thoughts, you begin to feel differently about who you are. You learn to love yourself for all of you imperfections.
8 Daily Affirmations
- I am beautiful.
- I forgive myself.
- I am perfect just the way I am.
- Today, I choose happiness.
- I let go of anything that makes me feel unappreciated.
- I control how I react to others.
- I am grateful for everything I have.
- I cannot control how others view me. I can only control how I feel about myself.

MAY DAY
May Day ushers in a traditional celebration of flowers and spring. In many ancient calendars, May 1 welcomed the first day of summer, which was truly a cause for celebration.
May Day has been a traditional day of celebration for centuries, with some of the earliest appearing in pre-Christian times. One of the more popular rituals was harvesting flowers and giving them to neighbors and strangers in cone-shaped baskets. These May Baskets become more commonly known as May Day Baskets. The current tradition is observed by hanging a cone-shaped basket full of flowers or other gifts on the outside doorknob, then knocking or ringing the doorbell and running away.
What Are A Few May Day Celebrations from Around the World?
- In English tradition, the observance is celebrated by crowning a May Queen and dancing around a maypole.
- The Finnish recognize a carnival-type celebration in the streets that includes a special type of lemonade made with lemons, brown sugar, and yeast.
- In France, it is correct to give people either dogwood or lily of the valley while Italians celebrate with a seasonal feast in honor of the arrival of spring.
7 WAYS TO CELEBREATE #MayDay
While there are several ways to celebrate the day, don’t limit yourself to just one. We recommend choosing several of these spring options to celebrate throughout the day.
- Dance! Either dance around a May Pole or just dance with someone near to you.
- Plant flowers. Make a point of planting wildflowers and you will attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
- Make a flower crown. When you’ve finished, wear it or put it on the queen in your life.
- Fill a basket with flowers. Then, deliver it to your neighbor, ring the bell, and run!
- You can also deliver flower bulbs that your friends and neighbors can plant in their yards.
-
Make a May Basket. Download this design from our Classroom section to make and fill it with flowers to share.
- Share your May Day creations and dance moves on social media using #MayDay.
BRIEF HISTORY OF MAY DAY
May Day has ancient roots dating back to Celtic traditions. The spring equinox beckoned the coming of warmer days and called for celebrations filled with rituals that ensured fertile crops and livestock. Many of the practices included dances, songs, flowers, and other traditions lost to time.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE PARFAIT DAY
We have a hard time resisting a sweet celebration for National Chocolate Parfait Day on May 1. The delicious layers of chocolate, cream, and more chocolate sweetly stacked together is enough to make us skip lunch and go straight to dessert.
Enjoying a delicious chocolate parfait on May 1 would be the perfect way to end your day, or start it. We will leave that up to you to decide. We simply provide you with an opportunity to indulge on the scrumptious food holiday.
In French, the word parfait means perfect. French and Americans, however, have a differing opinions on what a parfait really is. The traditional French parfait is made by boiling cream, adding egg, sugar and syrup then creating a custard-type puree, which is then frozen. Americans, on the other hand, layer ingredients of differing varieties. Both French and Americans use a clear, tall glass when serving a chocolate parfait.
While National Chocolate Parfait Day focuses on the chocolate parfait, that does not mean you cannot experiment with other fresh flavors. For example, fresh fruit and cream go quite well with chocolate. You can top can add other ingredients, such as pretzels or cookie bits. The options are limitless and can only be hindered by by your imagination.
Some people may consider a chocolate parfait a comfort food. Though a parfait can be made into a healthy food, today is about indulging and treating yourself with a chocolate parfait! We will, however meet the healthy people half way by recommending adding strawberries or raspberries to your parfait.
PARFAIT CELEBRATION
- Enjoy your version of a chocolate parfait today with family and friends.
- Create a chocolate parfait bar with a variety of ingredients to all everyone to build their own parfait.
- Share your photos and recipes on social media using #ChocolateParfaitDay.
NATIONAL CHOCOLATE PARFAIT DAY HISTORY
We were unable to find the creator of this fun food holiday. Our research did find this scrumptious dessert dates back to 1894 and seems to have originated in France.

May 1st Celebrated History
1840
The United Kingdom issued the world’s first adhesive postage stamp called the Penny Black. Sir Rowland Hill first proposed the idea back in 1837 as part of postal reform. At the time, the receiver bore the cost of postage upon delivery, and it could be costly depending on weight and the distance traveled. Fraud was also rampant. The Penny Black cost only a penny (as the name suggests) and the sender paid for the postage at the time of sending. The Penny Black featured a profile image of Queen Victoria. Soon, the idea of pre-paid postage spread around the world and across the pond to the United States.
1884
Catcher Moses Fleetwood Walker makes his major league baseball debut with Toledo of the Association League against Louisville. He is one of the first African Americans to play in the major leagues and when he leaves the league several months later, is the last until Jackie Robinson signs with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
1941
Orson Welles’ award-winning film Citizen Kane premieres in New York City. Welles’ also starred alongside Joseph Cotton and Dorothy Comingore in a story that follows the rise and fall of publishing magnate.
1971
Nearly 102 years after the transcontinental railroad was completed, Amtrak begins operation. The National Railroad Passenger Corporation is federally supported and provides intercity passenger train service in the United States.
May 1st Celebrated Birthday
Calamity Jane – 1852
Orphaned at a young age, Martha Jane Cannary grew up to be known as the legendary sharpshooter, Calamity Jane. She earned a notorious reputation in the Wild West of Deadwood, South Dakota, for her drunkenness, lawlessness, and relationships with wanted men, including Wild Bill Hickok. However, most of the stories surrounding her life are unverifiable. Later in her life, she would perform in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in 1893 and in the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.
Anna Jarvis – 1864
Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day in the United States, created the day to honor and fulfill her own mother’s dream. As a result, the day celebrates mothers all over the country and the world.
Scott Carpenter – 1925
A pioneer in space exploration and a member of the Mercury 7 astronauts, Scott Carpenter, became the second American to orbit the Earth. Carpenter left the surface of land behind by being both an astronaut and aquanaut.
Max Robinson – 1939
In 1978, Max Robinson became the first African American broadcast network news anchor when he joined the ABC World News Tonight team.
Judy Collins – 1939
The American singer-songwriter achieved critical success in the 1960s and 70s with hits such as “Both Sides of Now” and “Send in the Clowns.”

FOR THE LOVE OF COLOR!
MUSEUM NOW OFFERS ENCHROMA GLASSES FOR COLOR BLIND AUDIENCES TO EXPERIENCE COLOR
As part of our mission of accessibility and inclusion, Ogden Museum of Southern Art has partnered with EnChroma to make the colors in our artwork accessible to the color blind. Color blind guests can now borrow EnChroma glasses for color blindness at Ogden Museum for the duration of their visit.
Imagine being unable to see all the colors in a beautiful painting, a flower, a sunset, or the color of a loved one’s eyes? While people with normal color vision see over one million shades and hues, those with color vision deficiency only see up to 10% of colors. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are color blind: 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%). That means that over 1.9 million people in Louisiana and over 160,000 people in New Orleans are color blind and yet until now no museum in the state of Louisiana or in the city of New Orleans included accessibility options for this significant population.
Ogden Museum is proud to be the first museum in Louisiana to offer this new option for color blind guests.
Ask for Enchroma glasses at the front desk when you purchase your tickets to experience our art in full color!
Questions? Learn more about our accessibility accommodations!
Special Thanks to our Partner, EnChroma, for enabling a love of color f

JAZZ @ THE SANDBAR
ANNOUNCES SPRING 2023 SEASON
with 7 Sessions, First Time Guests
As Jazz at the Sandbar approaches its 30-year anniversary, it continues to fulfill its mission of providing direct mentoring by acclaimed jazz masters through concert performances with UNO Jazz Studies students. Jazz at the Sandbar also provides the extended UNO community with the rare opportunity to see and hear world-class artists in an intimate setting, while observing the development of the next generation of jazz presenters and performers.
The program brings acclaimed local and global musicians to the UNO campus for weekly teaching artist residencies for daytime masters classes and intimate workshops, and then evening public performances where the students perform with the guest artist in a professional setting.
Typically, each of the Spring and Fall seasons of the Jazz at the Sandbar series host six sessions. Ellis Marsalis Documentary Gets New Orleans Premiere Dates
by: VERONIKA LEE
Ellis, an intimate documentary on the late beloved Ellis Marsalis Jr. will make its New Orleans premiere next month at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. German filmmaker Sascha Just, who befriended the jazz pianist during one of her many trips to the city, turned teaching music into a Civil Rights Act and mentored a generation of top musicians while changing modern jazz. The film has screened at Doc NYC Fest and most recently at The American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs. The film chronicles how the performer, composer, and educator transcended racial injustices he faced from his childhood during segregation to his death from COVID 19.
OffBeat spoke to Just in 2020, during the fundraising phase of the Ellis Marsalis documentary film, about the musician’s outlook on life. “With one sentence he could say something really wonderful and be so insightful and funny. That was it — just one sentence. I loved how involved he got when he speaks of things he is interested in and how in depth he could go into about these things. Even though I am not a musician he became a role model on how to pursue something…to stick with it and go with what you love,” stated the filmmaker, who resides in New York.
The film includes interviews with Ellis’s sons Wynton, Branford, Ellis III, Delfeayo, and Jason as well as Ellis’s last concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC. Featuring never-before-seen historic footage, the film also contains a solo concert performed by the elder Marsalis exclusively for the film.
Ellis will make its New Orleans premiere Wednesday, May 3 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, 400 Esplanade Avenue. The event will kick off with a live performance from Jason Marsalis and the E-Quintet followed by the screening at 7:30 p.m.
Snug Harbor will screen the documentary the following night, Thursday, May 4. The historic Frenchmen Street music club where Ellis held court as bandleader weekly for over 30 years will host a one-day multi-media celebration of the music, life and legacy of Ellis Marsalis Jr, the “E-Day Festival” featuring an intimate, limited-capacity premiere screening of Just’s film, and two live musical tributes to Ellis led by Jason Marsalis with members of E’s last band. The Snug Harbor screening will host an opening reception and cocktail hour from 5-6 p.m., including a meet and greet with the filmmaker and Jason Marsalis, and some of Ellis’s band members, while ticketing and seating take place. The 6 p.m. screening will be followed by two live concerts led by Jason Marsalis and members of the E-Quintet, ticketed separately, at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Tickets for the Snug Harbor screening are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets for each of the live performances are $40, or an advance bundle package of $50 for film plus one concert. Snug Harbor states seating is very limited, advance tickets for all presentations are strongly suggested. Tickets for each presentation can be purchased at http://SnugJazz.com

Upcoming Events
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Second Weekend
Thursday, May 4 - Sunday, May 7th
Recharge, refuel, restock...Swirl is your home away from home during the fest! Our location just blocks from the Sauvage Street entrance makes us the perfect place to stop by for some quality beverages before, during and after the fest. We are open early (10 - 8, Thursday10 - 9, Friday & Saturday; 10-9 Sunday) for your pre-fest mimosa, Erin's infamous Bloody, Italian Spritz, bubbly, local brews, our boozy coffee cordial, and of course our eclectic selection of international wines by the glass or bottle. We are super excited to welcome you back! Have a fun and safe festival season.
First Weekend Recap:
- The Boozy Iced Coffee Cordial took off this weekend, with fans coming 3 mornings in a row! A delicious combo of Oat Milk, Cool Brew and Licor 43 (plus you can add whipped cream or whipped coconut cream if you want to keep it vegan) - it's a great way to start your Fest.
- Erin's Infamous Bloody Mary was pronounced the best Bloody ever! With her homemade juice mix and literal salad bar of pickled veggies with 3 different hot sauces to choose from, you can get your daily dose of vegetables without waiting in a long line at the Fest.
- Our Italian Spritz was so popular we ran out of Contratto and had to get an emergency delivery (thank you Matt Lirette!).
- The classic Mimosa is always a hit and probably what we pour the most during Fest. Good bubbles with just a touch of orange juice for color, it's a cool, refreshing start to your day.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

2nd Annual Food Fight Returns in New Location
New Orleans, LA – New Orleans Food Fight presented by Stella Artois moves from the Bywater’s Crescent Park upriver to the Riverwalk Outlets Spanish Plaza on Thursday, May 25th from 6-10pm. Food Fight is the inaugural event at the plaza following the recent completion of the ferry landing and the new Four Seasons Hotel.
The one-night only event produced by Yeah You Right Events benefits the PLEASE Foundation, a Louisiana 501(c)(3) that provides mentorship, leadership training, and scholarships for at-risk students to attend local college preparatory high schools in the New Orleans area. Last year’s events raised over $50,000 for the PLEASE students currently attending local college preparatory high schools.
“Thanks to our amazing sponsors and fans, our first Food Fight was super successful,” said event producer Shane Finkelstein. “It’s now one of the biggest chef competitions in the city and a great opportunity to showcase New Orleans’ top chefs and mixologists while raising money for our next generation of local leaders.”
Food Fight fans and celebrity judges choose the winners for Top Classic Dish, Top Creative Dish, Top Vegetarian Dish, Top Classic Cocktail and Top Creative Cocktail. Fest-goers will also enjoy creative pop-up bar areas and DJ lounges, spirit tastings, top local bands, burlesque by Trixie Minx, and additional eye-popping visual elements.
Confirmed competitors for Food Fight Champion include Apolline, The Chloe, Deanasco’s, Los Jefes Grill, Mahoney’s Poboys & Seafood, Messina’s, Saint John, Soulé Cafe, Tava Indian Street Food, and Wishing Town Bakery. Spirit sponsors include Casamigos, Crown Royal, Hard Hide Strawberry Whiskey, Jack Daniel’s, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Ketel One, Makers Mark, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey, Tres Generaciones, and Who Dat Spirits.
The Food Fight VIP Experience presented by William Grant & Sons includes open bar, food tastings by James Beard nominated chef Michael Gulatta of Maypop, Hendrix Gin and Milagro Tequila cocktails by the bar team at Meril’s, plus gourmet desserts, and additional entertainment including James Andrews and Honey Island Swamp Band.
Food Fight ticketing options include $135.00 VIP, $105.00 Early Entry/First Tasting and $85.00 General Admission. Early Bird discounted tickets go on sale March 12th starting at $55. Once inside the festival, all food and drinks are included. Visit www.foodfightnola.com for more information.
Sponsors for Food Fight 2023 include Stella Artois, Hyundai of Metairie, Performance Food Service, Riverwalk Outlets, Where Y'at Magazine, N.O.Vative Printing, Element, Evamor Natural Artesian Water, and Joe’s Septic Contractors.
This year’s goal is to double last year’s amount and raise over $100,000 for the PLEASE Foundation so they can continue to do the important work they do in our community.
