NATIONAL NYLON STOCKING DAY
Each year on May 15th, we recognize the stylish variety and color available on National Nylon Stocking Day.
Many may not remember ever hearing the term “nylon stockings.” Varying in color, design, and transparency, a nylon stocking (also known as hose) is a close-fitting, variously elastic garment worn the same as socks or tights.
Stockings worn before the 1890s were made of woven cloth such as cotton, linen, wool, or silk. Before the 1920s, women’s stockings were worn for warmth. As hemlines of women’s dresses rose in the 1920s, women began to wear stockings over their exposed legs. These 1920s stockings were sheer, made first of silk or rayon, followed by nylon after 1940.
Chemical company DuPont’s introduction of nylon in 1939 began a high demand for stockings in the United States. As nylon stockings were inexpensive, durable, and shear, up to 4 million pairs would be purchased each day.
World War II and Beyond
On February 11, 1942, as America entered World War II, DuPont ceased production of nylon stockings and switching its focus to the manufacture of parachutes, airplane cords, and rope. This created a mass shortage followed by a black market for stockings. At the end of World War II, DuPont resumed production of the stockings but could not meet the demand leading to nylon riots in American stores. In time, DuPont was able to increase its output.
In the 1940s and 1950s, the first pantyhose made its appearance. Film and theater productions had stockings sewn to the briefs of actresses and dancers, as seen in popular films such as Daddy Long Legs. Unlike stockings, pantyhose did not require a garter belt to hold the stockings up.
Pantyhose were introduced in 1959, providing a convenient alternative to stockings which led to a decline in their sales. In 1970, for the first time, United States sales of pantyhose exceeded stocking sales and have remained the same ever since. In 1987, there was a slight decline in sales in pantyhose due to the newly invented hold-ups. However, they remain the most purchased kind of hosiery.

Endangered Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtles Released
Two endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are swimming in the Gulf of Mexico today after undergoing months of rehabilitation in New Orleans.
The turtles were released off the coast of Port Fourchon this week by Audubon Nature Institute’s Coastal Wildlife Network. The turtles were brought to Audubon after they were found cold-stunned last year off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After initially treated and stabilized there, they were part of a large group of sea turtles brought to New Orleans for continued treatment and rehabilitation.
Cold stunning happens when turtles are exposed to cold temperatures causing hypothermia, it often prohibits turtles' ability to swim making them susceptible to boat strikes, drowning or additional cold temperatures.
These two young turtles were dubbed Lavender and Habanero by their Audubon care team. Due to their size, they are estimated to be between two and five years old. They are the second group of turtles CWN has released so far this year, several other turtles remain in Audubon’s care as they continue to recover.
Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are the smallest and most endangered of all sea turtle species. Once plentiful in the Gulf of the Mexico, they are now critically endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, boat strikes and bycatch from commercial fishing.
Coordinated by Audubon Nature Institute, the Coastal Wildlife Network (CWN) is NOAA Fisheries’ primary stranding network response partner for marine mammals (dolphins and whales) and sea turtles in Louisiana. CWN is committed to the humane care and treatment of injured, ill, or displaced marine animals in Louisiana and is the only entity in the state responsible for the rehabilitation of live marine mammals and sea turtles. The information CWN collects from stranded animals provides a snapshot into the health of the marine environment and provides a better understanding of threats to marine mammals and sea turtles in the wild.
The public is advised to report all stranded marine mammals and sea turtles (live or dead) to CWN at 877-942-5343.
When reporting strandings, be prepared to give:
• Exact location and/or GPS coordinates,
• Photographs of the animal, and
• Nature of the report (type of animal/live or dead/size, etc.).
Recommendations when reporting a live stranded animal include:
• Put human safety above animal safety. If conditions are dangerous, do not attempt to approach the animal.
• Keep crowds away and noise levels down to avoid causing stress to the animal.
• Don't push an animal on shore back into the water.
• If the animal returns to the water on its own, don't attempt to interact with it.
• Leave all entanglements that may be present on the animal.

TODAY'S DAILY QUESTION
What does "capitulate" mean?Conquer
Resist
Fight
Surrender
Capitulate means to surrender, usually in a conflict or disagreement. It is the act of giving up or yielding to an opponent or demand. When one capitulates, they are essentially admitting defeat and accepting the terms or conditions set forth by the opposing party. This can occur in various contexts, such as in war, negotiations, or personal relationships. Capitulating may not always be seen as a negative action, as it can also be a strategic move to avoid further conflict or harm. However, it is important to weigh the consequences and implications of surrendering before making such a decision.

Fashion designer Lela Rose is here 6:00 pm, Monday, May 15 to celebrate her latest work, Fresh Air Affairs: Entertaining with Style in the Great Outdoors! Rose is the ultimate party girl, and with Fresh Air Affairs she is back with advice on giving stylish parties outside, filled with ideas for beautiful table settings, flower arrangements, and specialty cocktails and canapés.

From always choosing a specialty cocktail to picking a pretty dress to match the theme of the party, this book shows the importance of celebrating life’s everyday moments with the people who matter most.
The evening will kick off with Rose in-conversation with Jennifer Lauscha, followed by a Q&A and a signing.

Floor & Decor moves into old Toys 'R' Us spot in Metairie
Tonya Buckhalter, store manager of Floor & Decor, cuts the ribbon unveiling the new Metairie location (Photo by Marie Fazio)
Floor & Decor, a flooring and tile store, has opened in the former site of Toys 'R' Us on Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie.
The warehouse-style store opened its doors to customers on Thursday morning. It’s the second location in the New Orleans area, adding to one in Gretna. The company formerly had a showroom on Magazine Street that closed earlier this year.
The Veterans Boulevard location has sat vacant since 2018, when Toys R'' Us closed amid a national liquidation of its stores.
At a ribbon cutting commemorating the store’s opening, Jefferson Parish Council member Jennifer Van Vrancken said the store was the fourth Floor & Decor store in Louisiana and the 200th across the country.
“Talk about a resource for all the growth we have in Jefferson Parish,” she said.

JEDCO & KEY ECONOMIC PARTNERS TO
HOST WEBINAR ON FEMA'S RISK RATING 2.0
(AVONDALE, La) -- Tomorrow, join JEDCO, Algiers Economic Development Foundation, and Westbank Business & Industry Association for a presentation and discussion about FEMA's new Risk Rating 2.0 assessment method and how it will impact the residents and businesses of Jefferson Parish and the Greater New Orleans region.
Since the 1960s, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has played an important role in shaping and protecting communities across the country. In 2021-22, the NFIP underwent its greatest change ever in rate calculation, with Risk Rating 2.0 – raising prices for 77% of policyholders. FEMA, the program’s administrator, has implemented the Risk Rating 2.0 methodology under their authority, without Congressional action, and in the face of continued concerns by program policyholders, stakeholders, and Congressional leaders alike. In the past year, NFIP participation has fallen by over 3.5%, increasing risk exposure nationally; FEMA’s internal studies have predicted that 20% of policyholders may eventually drop coverage. Moreover, NFIP is currently $20.5B of debt and set to expire on September 30, 2023, if Congress does not take action.
Since April 2013, Greater New Orleans, Inc. has led the Coalition for Sustainable Flood Insurance (CSFI). CSFI is a national coalition of approximately 250 organizations across 35 states, formed during the implementation of the Biggert-Waters Act, which previously threatened to change flood insurance rates dramatically. CSFI was a driving force behind the passage of the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act (HFIAA), compromise legislation gained overwhelming bipartisan and bicameral support. Currently, CSFI is assembled around transparency and affordability issues of Risk Rating 2.0 and enactment of a long-term NFIP reauthorization legislation. CSFI will provide background into Risk Rating 2.0, its impact, and expectations for NFIP in the year ahead.
During this webinar, Peter Waggoner, Public Policy Manager for Greater New Orleans, Inc., will break down the latest news related to Risk Rating 2.0 and share new map tools that show geographic base rates for flood insurance policies.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP DAY
On May 15th, we recognize a morsel of a thing on National Chocolate Chip Day!
Have you ever wondered how a single ingredient would change a recipe? If it weren’t for one curious baker, it would be hard to imagine where we would be without the invention of chocolate chips.
In 1937, Ruth Graves Wakefield of Whitman Massachusetts must have been curious about what a little bit of chocolate would add to her cookies. While working at the Toll House Inn, she added cut-up chunks of a semi-sweet Nestle chocolate bar to a cookie recipe. The cookies were a huge success and in 1939 Wakefield signed an agreement with Nestle to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging. In exchange for the recipe, Wakefield received a lifetime supply of chocolate. The Nestle brand Toll House cookies were named for the Inn.
Nestle initially included a small chopping tool with the chocolate bars, too. Starting in 1941, Nestle and other competitors started selling the chocolate in chip or morsel form. For the first time, bakers began making chocolate chip cookies without chopping up the chocolate bar first.
Chocolate chips originally came in semi-sweet. Later, chocolate producers began offering bittersweet, semi-sweet, mint, white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white and dark swirled. Today, chips also come in a variety of other flavors that bakers and candy makers use creatively in their kitchens.
While cookies may be the first treat to come to mind, imagination is really the only thing limiting how chocolate chips can be used in baking and candy making. Even savory dishes feature chocolate chips in a variety of ways, too. Had Ruth Graves Wakefield never wondered what a few chopped up chunks of chocolate would be like in her baking, we wouldn’t even have chocolate chip cookies.

With the successful relaunch of craft breweries, I thought you might like a brief look at the city's brewing history.
The New Orleans Brewing Association promoted the city's beers at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Its exhibit featured an enormous beer bottle rising up from a pyramid of kegs, bottles and palms, and hard-working gnomes gathering wheat/making beer, and a celebratory gnome raising a frothy glass. Images of the association's "Perfection" and "Louisiana" lagers and "Pilsener" were utilized in its printed announcement. The association included a wood engraving showing off its various brewing plants as though they occupied the same site. The Crescent City, Louisiana, Pelican, Southern and Weckerling's operations are identified by signage.
By 1901, the Crescent and the Southern were both closed, and Chicago brewing concerns were interested in absorbing the remaining plants, according to "An Attempt to Absorb the Local Breweries." The Daily Picayune 26 June 1901.

St. Patrick's Hall, located on the corner of Camp and Lafayette Streets, was erected in 1874. Among the many events associated with the building include the inauguration of Governor Nicholls on the balcony of St. Patrick's Hall on January 8, 1877. Then, in 1891, when St. Patrick's Hall housed the city's Criminal Court, it was the site of the infamous trial of a group of Italian men accused of assassinating Police Chief David Hennessy. When the trial ended without any convictions, a mob broke into the parish prison and killed eleven Italian prisoners. The John Minor Wisdom Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals presently stands on the site. St. Patrick's Hall was demolished, and workers broke ground in 1909 on the site, which encompasses the block bounded by Lafayette, Camp, Magazine, and Capdeville streets overlooking Lafayette Square. Construction of the elaborate building took many years, but although the date 1912 is incised on the frieze on the Lafayette Street side, the interior was not finished until 1915, with employees occupying their offices the following year.

⚜️Sal R. Perricone is in New Orleans.
A Sicilian prayer to everyone whose mother is not with us physically.
Be aware of her presence every day. Remember the clothes she washed, the dinners she cooked on a moment’s notice, the nursing of bruises and scapes, the midnight talks on the end of your bed. They will never leave you and you must never forget them. They are your legacy bequeathed to you by the only person who is responsible for your smiles and tears.
Yes, your father is very important, too, but while he was away building your your life, your mother gave you your life and did everything to sustain it.
Though she is gone from these earthly coils, she is next to you every day. You just need to stop and listen. Be silent. Be still. Be attentive. See the signs. Our Blessed Mother allows her to speak through her. But you must listen. This is no time to be a child.
So, on this day don’t be emotionally empty; be filled with the wine she has poured you. She sitting there waiting for a conversation. Talk, but listen.
God gave her to you and you to her. How can you ever be separated. You can’t. Pray and listen. Your bond is deep.
Amen
Note: the image attached to this post came with paternal grandmother from Sicily to New Orleans in the 1890’s. It’s one of my precious possessions.

Business owner and entrepreneurial mastermind, Christopher Pham founded Micro Pharms back in 2020 when he started growing microgreens in his apartment. Why microgreens? Chris just wanted to develop a healthier lifestyle for himself. When the pandemic hit and many of his restaurant clients stopped taking orders, Chris had to think of a new way to repurpose his microgreens, so he started developing value-added products like micro-kimchi, chili oils, and dried spice and seasoning blends like his Asian Chicken Cajun Fry Mix (also great with fried vegetables!). Chris’s main goal with his value-added products is to uplift his Asian culture and heritage while bringing a fun and playful energy to his brand. You might have even noticed Gazpacho, the red microgreen mascot on all of Chris’ packaging and labels. In the coming months, Chris is looking forward to expanding his offerings to frozen prepared foods like dumplings. Check out Micro Pharms at the Thursday Mid-City Market or the Sunday City Park Market!

Audubon’s Cool Zoo with the Gator Run lazy river opens May 2, and it will operate weekends-only through the end of May.
"The Cool Zoo with the Gator Run offers great ways to have fun and stay cool while visiting the Zoo," said Audubon’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Uptown Facilities Daine Appleberry. "We are excited to reopen this popular attraction for the summer season."
Starting on May 29, the water park will be open daily until Aug. 5, when returns to weekends-only operation. The park closes for the season in September.
The details
Audubon Zoo guests will be able to cool off twice a day at the water park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. each day. The Cool Zoo closes every day from 1 to 2 p.m. for cleaning and maintenance.
All the fan-favorite features will be there: the alligator water slide, the spider monkey soaker, water-spitting snakes and shady spots for adults.
The Gator Run lazy river offers visitors the option to cool down by floating atop a tube along a 750-foot long course that is 3-feet deep and 10-feet wide. It also features two sand beaches and water cannons that can be used to spray other visitors as they float on down the river. It also includes showers, restrooms, lockers, outdoor seating, a private area for nursing mothers and the "Gator Bites'' concession stand.
Rafts are included in the admission price for Gator Run, and anyone shorter than 48 inches will need a life jacket supplied by Audubon Zoo.
Outside food and drinks are welcomed in both Cool Zoo and Gator Run, but the size of coolers and ice chests cannot exceed 28 quarts. Glass containers and disposable straws and lids are not permitted for the safety of the zoo's animals. Audubon may search coolers.
Get tickets
Cool Zoo tickets can be purchased online and at the zoo's front gate. Regular admission to Cool Zoo, including Gator Run, is $9 for Audubon Nature Institute Members and $12 for non-members, plus Audubon Zoo admission.
For more details about tickets, cabana rentals and the 2023 season schedule, visit https://audubonnatureinstitute.org/tickets.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
