Business Person of the Year Dinner
Friday, June 24, 2022, 6pm-9pm, Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa
The Lafayette Chamber is thrilled to announce John McCormick as our 2022 Business Person of the Year. We will host the award dinner on Friday, June 24, 2022 at the Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa.
John McCormick, co-owner of Lamorinda Music, took the reigns as President of the Lafayette Chamber in January 2020. Little did he know what kind of year it was going to be. We began the year with President John giving a beginner’s lesson on the Ukulele to the entire board at our annual retreat. We agreed on all kinds of new programs along with debating social and political positions. We had a full agenda and John was ready for the challenge. Shortly after the retreat we found ourselves at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. The goals and projects changed and with John’s leadership, the Chamber was able to pivot to a new purpose, saving our local economy.
We all know the sacrifices and hurdles small businesses had to endure through nearly two years. John was so dedicated to help our local businesses, he asked to stay on for a second year, and oh what a year it was. During this most challenging time for our community, John not only provided leadership to our business partners, but also ran a very successful music store with his wife Colleen, and is now finishing his Master’s in History from Harvard. During his presidency, our membership grew to over 620 members including 100 new members in 2021 alone. The Chamber worked with the City of Lafayette and Contra Costa County to advocate for our business community. By providing loan resources and facilitating online learning gatherings, Q&A sessions and updating changing Covid protocols as well as helping our restaurants create safe outdoor dining experiences all with the mission to keep Lafayette strong during a challenging time.
Learn more about John McCormick and the Lafayette Business Person of the Year at
We look forward to seeing you on June 24!

Building Electrification in Lafayette
“Electrifying everything” and powering our lives with clean electricity is an essential way communities can respond to climate chaos (fires, droughts, poor air quality). In our homes and places of work, substituting natural gas appliances with new, highly-efficient electric alternatives effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves health and safety, and lowers energy costs for residents.
Therefore, the City of Lafayette is considering adopting policies to require newly constructed buildings to be built all-electric and to encourage existing building owners to convert their fossil fuel appliances to electric as well.

ISO 4000-5000 sq ft. Space for Storage and Retail
Grateful Gatherings, is a nonprofit 501c3, which provides furniture and household items for people transitioning from homelessness. When a family transitions from homelessness or crisis into a new home in the Bay Area, they rarely have anything but a small box of belongings, we change lives in one day as we collect and deliver all the family would need to make their apartment a home. We believe that families thrive when they have a safe and comfortable home.
Our need: Since 2013 we have helped over 1000 people in the Bay Area without a storage space. We had delivered items only on demand, but now more than ever, we can’t keep up with our growing list of families looking for beds and furniture. We are looking for a 4000-5000 sq ft. space to store extra furniture items to help people immediately and sell items to raise funds for Grateful Gatherings. Areas we are interested in are: Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Alamo, Concord, Pacheco, or Martinez. These locations would allow our moving sponsors to easily pick up and drop off items at the location. If you may know anyone who has a property that could fit this request, please reach out to Grateful Gathering’s Co-Founder, Chris Flitter, chris@gratefulgatherings.org, 415-722-7238.

Lamorinda Community Emergency Communications Exercise
May 4, 2022, 7pm
Lamorinda CERT, in conjunction with Moraga-Orinda Fire Department Communications Support, is working to expand emergency communications coverage in the Lamorinda area. The intent is to be able to forward information to the public as it becomes available and pass back to the Emergency Operations Center whatever situational information is provided by the residents in the neighborhoods. The capacity to provide emergency communications would be critical for many kinds of situations, not just for wildfire evacuations.
This exercise will help us document radio coverage within Lamorinda and help us at the time of real emergency. If you are a licensed GMRS radio operator in Lamorinda please help us by planning to participate in this radio “check in” and here are the details:
Date/Time: May 4th, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
GMRS Channels for participants:
Moraga GMRS, LARIG channel 121, GMRS 20R, code 4
Orinda GMRS, LARIG channel 122, GMRS 21R, code 4
Lafayette GMRS, LARIG channel 123, GMRS 22R code 4
When participants call in they will be asked to provide name, general location, and evacuation zone. Evacuation zones can be determined by going to: www.community.zonehaven.com and entering the property address.
Participants who report to the Communications Headquarters will be invited to stay for the cupcake party to follow!

Sweet Thursday presents Marion Nestle: Unsavory Truth - How Food Companies Skew the Science of What We Eat
Marion Nestle is a leading nutritionist, James Beard Award-winner, and the author of What to Eat and Soda Politics. In Unsavory Truth, Nestle exposes how the food industry corrupts scientific research for profit. Is chocolate really heart-healthy? Does yogurt prevent type 2 diabetes? Can pomegranates help cheat death? News accounts bombard us with amazing claims, report them as science, and influence what we eat. Yet these studies are more about marketing than science, and are often paid for by companies that sell those foods.
