WORLD PALOMA DAY | MAY 22
On May 22nd, World Paloma Day recognizes the national drink of Mexico. This refreshing cocktail made with tequila and grapefruit soda is definitely worth celebrating!
The growing reputation of the Paloma in the United States may be related to its sparkling personality. The vibrant flavor and bright citrus notes combined with a light, energetic flare makes the Paloma a celebration drink.
However, where and when the Paloma began is a bit of mystery. In 1938, the first grapefruit soda came on the scene in the United States. From there, the soda made its way to Mexico in 1955. Whoever first mixed tequila, lime, and grapefruit soda brought together an undeniably beautiful and delightful beverage.
The Paloma’s shimmering character is just one reason it is the most popular cocktail in Mexico. Easily mixed in large batches to serve in a pitcher for company, the Paloma complements a summer cookout, as well as a more formal affair.

Audubon Aquarium Names Penguin Chick
When Audubon Aquarium reopens next month after its major reimaginging, guests will see a new member in the Aquarium’s penguin colony.
Titan is the newest penguin at Audubon Aquarium. He hatched February 10th,and has been hatched and hand raised by Audubon team members. Raising a penguin chick is hard work and requires almost around-the-clock feedings. He is adjusting well and is now eating whole fish like the rest of penguin colony. His keepers say he prefers herring but will also dine on capelin when offered. He is growing fast and is already as big as Ocio, his father.
Titan is the third chick from penguin parents Ocio and Hubig. Their other chicks are Zion, who recently relocated to another colony at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, and Moon, who remains in the Audubon colony. Keepers suggested Titan’s name because of the over 154 celestial bodies in our solar system, Titan, a moon of Saturn, is the only place besides Earth known to have liquids in the form of rivers, lakes and seas on its surface.
"African penguins like Titan are endangered and part of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Species Survival Plan," said Bill Robles, Audubon Aquarium curator of birds. "As part of the plan to help save this species from extinction, we work with other accredited zoos and aquariums to follow strict breeding guidelines to ensure valuable genetics are passed on to our penguin chicks and protect the birds in our care."
Next step for Titan is a rite of passage for all youngsters, learning to swim. After he masters his swimming lessons, he will join the rest of the birds in the colony. When the Aquarium opens on June 8, guests can spot Titan among the other penguins because he has charcoal gray feathers. He will get his signature black and white feathers early next year.

New direct flights from New Orleans start today: See where they land on East, West coasts.
Breeze Airways launched two new direct flights from New Orleans to the opposite ends of the U.S. with nearly full inaugural flights that took to the skies Friday, according to the airline.
Effective immediately, New Orleanians can fly from the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) to Los Angeles, California (LAX), and Hartford, Connecticut (BDL), nonstop. The seasonal flights were first announced in February.
Breeze, a relatively new airline that launched in May 2021, also added 20 new "above the wing" positions in New Orleans, including gate agents and ticket counter operators, Breeze spokesperson Ryne Williams said. The jobs pay $15 an hour plus benefits, Williams said, and New Orleans is the first airport in the Breeze network to have its own staff working those jobs, with all others using sub-contractors.
“After just two years in New Orleans, we are pleased to see Breeze continue to expand their base here with 17 nonstop and BreezeThru destinations and 20 new jobs,” said Kevin Dolliole, director of aviation for the New Orleans airport. “We hope to see their investment in the Louis Armstrong Airport continue to grow and have a lasting impact on our community.”
Breeze started flying out of New Orleans in July 2021 with the goal of connecting smaller markets with direct flights and shorter fly times.
Though Breeze is still one of the smaller carriers at the New Orleans airport, its passenger numbers rose 40% in the year through February, to just under 9,000 passengers a month. In comparison, MSY's largest domestic carrier, Southwest Airlines, reached 167,533 passengers a month in February.
Tony McAuley contributed to this report.

City of New Orleans Completes $5 Million Breakwater Drive Improvement Project
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) today announced the completion of a $5 million improvement project on Breakwater Drive located in the West End neighborhood along Lake Pontchartrain.
“Repairing damaged infrastructure, especially that which makes our city more resilient, remains a top priority of my administration,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “We’re pleased to announce the completion of these improvements for residents of the West End neighborhood, as well as visitors who frequent the Lakefront and boaters who use the marina and launch here. This project includes several upgrades that will boost residents' quality of life, in addition to putting more protections in place in regards to severe storms, making this a true win-win for the entire community.”
This FEMA-funded project consisted of re-establishing the berms or terrace bordering which helps control erosion from Lake Pontchartrain by facilitating additional riprap and rehabilitating the breakwater retaining wall. The full scope of work also includes repaving the asphalt roadway, patching the roadway with asphalt or concrete, repairing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons, installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps at the intersection and rehabilitating the parking areas and boat launch. Sidewalks were also installed along the retaining wall on both the north and west berms.
The Breakwater Drive Improvement Project was constructed by TKTMJ, Inc. and designed by All South Consulting Engineers.
"We are very excited about the infrastructure investment on the city's lakefront through the Breakwater Drive project," said Sarah McLaughlin Porteous, Acting Director of DPW. "The lakefront is one of our most utilized assets, and improvements to the berms, parking lot, boat launch, roadway and sidewalks are essential not only for the overall enjoyment of the area but also for safety during severe weather events."
Under the Cantrell Administration, residents of City Council District A are seeing major infrastructure improvements as part of an unprecedented city-wide push to restore damaged streets and build sustainable and resilient mitigation systems. Since May 2018, 43 roadwork projects valued at $158 million have been completed. Currently, there are 24 projects under construction valued at $331 million and another 10 projects valued at $71 million in the bid and award phase.

New report calls for overhaul of Sewerage & Water Board’s structure
Michael Isaac Stein, Verite Via Louisiana Illuminator//
In a scathing new report, the Bureau of Governmental Research watchdog group called for a complete overhaul of the governance structure of the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans.
The report, released Wednesday, blames the Sewerage & Water Board’s unique governing structure for the agency’s myriad problems in recent years, including failing flood protection, recurring boil-water advisories and skyrocketing costs for ratepayers — combined with a long-troubled billing system that has left many residents facing sudden, unexplained spikes in their monthly bills.
“The structure is inefficient, ineffective and ultimately to blame for many of the infrastructure problems New Orleanians experience,” BGR President and CEO Rebecca Mowbray said in a press release.
The New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board, as the report describes it, is an odd mix between an independent, state-created agency and a municipal water department controlled by city government. Its enabling legislation and the laws that it operates under were passed by the Louisiana state Legislature. But the New Orleans mayor serves as the board’s president, and the New Orleans City Council controls billing rates and taxes that fund the agency.
“The result is a complicated web of competing interests and weak accountability that works against long-term performance,” Mowbray said.
The state control makes it difficult for the agency and local leaders to implement changes, the report says, and the involvement of the council means that crucial financial decisions are subject to political pressure, resulting in funding delays that lead to “reactive, crisis-driven” rate hikes.
The report laid out two potential redesigns of the current system. The first and “easier” option would be a set of reforms to the existing Sewerage & Water Board.
The second option would be harder to fulfill but would solve more of the current problems: replace the Sewerage & Water Board with a city-created water department.
But the report says that doesn’t necessarily make option two better. Disbanding the Sewerage & Water Board would be extremely complicated, both practically and politically. And it isn’t necessarily a silver bullet, since success will depend on a well-run city administration, which is never a guarantee.
“Creating a municipal utility would be a complicated process and raises additional considerations, such as the City’s competency,” the report says.
BGR said the city could choose either option, but that the status quo is unsustainable.
“Inaction poses unacceptable risks to vital infrastructure systems,” the report says, noting that government groups, mayors and independent reports have been calling for a system overhaul for decades.

NATIONAL VANILLA PUDDING DAY | MAY 22
May 22nd is the day we recognize National Vanilla Pudding Day. Enjoy it with a delicious dish of cold, creamy vanilla pudding.
The puddings we enjoy as desserts today are not what was commonly known as pudding at ancient dinner tables. Most medieval puddings were meat-based and seasoned with herbs and spices. Even sweetened cooks usually served them hot. Toward the end of the 18th century, people more than likely made puddings from grains or day-old bread with nuts, fruit, or meats. They used these puddings to stretch meals for a large family.
The creamy pudding we are more familiar with today is related to the custard, minus the eggs.
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but spouses who are chemists are the inventors. When you are Alfred Bird and your wife is allergic to eggs, that is very true. In 1837, Bird invented an egg-free custard powder using flavored cornstarch.
My-T-Fine produced the earliest packaged pudding in the United States in 1918. This and other puddings like them still required cooking on the stove. The instant version came along in the mid-1940s. On its own or as an ingredient in a larger recipe, pudding can be enjoyed in various flavors.

The New Orleans Culture⚜️
Stephen Austen
Late every Saturday night we huddled at our trusty black-and-white TV. After wiggling the rabbit ears and aluminum foil flaps we generally firmed-up WWL TV’s signal. It was almost time for “Morgus The Magnificent”.
Those last few minutes saw us raiding carefully hoarded caches of brick-like “Big Time” and “Hollywood” candy bars. Frozen to perfection, they’d crack into handfuls of icy confection. If we had friends over, Mom would break out a Jiffy Pop kit, too. But it usually puffed into an aluminum foil balloon, then burst. We’d smell like burnt popcorn for days.
Finally, creepy sound effects, and a voice-over by ERIC the talking skull, introduced Morgus himself. His zany experiments were sandwiched between installments of B-grade or subtitled horror movies.
So, while giant ants ate Las Vegas, or living trees with octopus tentacles captured native women, Morgus would tee-up his evening’s experiment. It usually involved the active participation - or maybe victimization - of his hooded assistant “Chopsley”.
One night, Morgus amputated Chopsley’s very hand. Yeah…this was heady stuff and we were shocked witless. Morgus was touting his new scientific gizmo that would whip-up a replacement hand for the dull-witted Chopsley. Touted as a true medical breakthrough, Morgus milked the gag throughout the show.
Finally, after the last tentacle-waving tree digested the last native maiden, Morgus flipped a switch on his miracle device. We all leaned in, anticipating a new hand for Chopsley.
To the consternation of all, only ground hamburger meat was disgorged. “No hand!” We hooted at the high humor as Chopsley chased Morgus around the lab (fade to black). . .
And so for decades, Morgus The Magnificent moved here and there, changing channels while guaranteeing his brand of pseudo-scientific hijinks. Sadly, Morgus, aka. Sid Noel, passed away in August, 2020.

Established in 1842, the mercantile store founded by Daniel Henry Holmes became well-known as D.H. Holmes. His first store was not on Canal Street, but at 22 Chartres Street. As the store prospered, Holmes found larger quarters in the 800 block of Canal Street in 1849, eventually having entrances on Canal Street, Iberville Street, Bourbon Street, and Dauphine Street, and a receiving warehouse behind the store on Iberville Street.
This photograph of the interior of the store was taken in 1892 looking from the main entrance on Canal Street into the rear of the store. Notice the line of stools where customers could relax as clerks brought merchandise for them to consider. An atrium ceiling opened to the second floor. The cathedral-like setting was fitting for one of the South’s premiere retail operations.
Growing up, the lines were clearly drawn – it was either Holmes or Maison Blanche, with loyalties running as fierce as they might with Morning Call or Café du Monde, Galatoire’s or Antoine’s, Bourbon or Scotch, and Tulane or LSU. My family was firmly in the D.H. Holmes camp and things became tense when I went to work at Maison Blanche right out of college, easing somewhat until I left to go to graduate school five years later.
D.H. Holmes was sold to the Dillard’s chain in 1989 and the property on Canal Street was redeveloped in 1995 as the Chateau Sonesta Hotel, now the Hyatt French Quarter Hotel.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Powers Beekeepers
Meet the Powers! Terry and Dani Powers have been bringing their honey to our markets for over three years now, and have been producing honey for over seven years. Between their locations in Algiers and Belle Chasse, Louisiana, the Powers take care of a total of 150 hives from which they produce pure, raw, and unfiltered honey. Alongside their 100% natural honey, Powers Beekeepers produces comb honey, beeswax, pollen, propolis tinctures, and beeswax candles made in a variety of beautiful and unique molds. Interested in beekeeping yourself? The Powers also teach a beginners beekeeping class at Sugar Roots Farm and sell nucleus hives - a small but established colony that's perfect for kick-starting a new beehive.
A relatively new addition to Power’s product line-up, the Dani bar can now be found alongside their weekly array of honey products. Affectionately named after its inventor, the Dani bar is composed of jujubes, goji berries, raw honey as well as pecans, peanuts, and black sesame seeds. Stop by the Power’s table at any of our markets and grab yourself a delicious Dani bar.

Food Fight ticketing options include $135.00 VIP, $105.00 Early Entry/First Tasting and $85.00 General Admission. Early Bird discounted tickets go on sale March 12th starting at $55. Once inside the festival, all food and drinks are included. Visit www.foodfightnola.com for more information.

Friday Night Wine School, Breaking Bread with John Lott
Friday, May 19, 2023 - 6 spots remaining
You can probably count on one hand the number of times we have featured wines from a California producer, so, if we do, you know it's for a very good reason...It was love at first sip for us when John Lott first brought us a Breaking Bread wine. We liked the winery's story and the winemaking approach is a perfect fit for us so we continued to bring in more and more of the wines. Delicious, balanced, playful, natural wines that are perfect for summertime drinking in New Orleans.
The wines are made by Erik Miller, founder and winemaker of Kokomo Wines, whose interest in natural wine came about as he noticed a shift in the California wine industry toward lower alcohol, food-friendly, low-intervention wine. He had been making wine for sixteen years and with the development of a more traditional brand, had a solid foundation in winemaking as it pertains to microbiology and fermentation science. When he decided to start Breaking Bread, it was very important to him, artistically, to build something completely different than his first conception, Kokomo. He wanted to be challenged in his craft as a winemaker and he also wanted to understand fermentation from a different perspective that could possibly play a part in future Kokomo vintages. Erik is also a chef so the concept of sharing meals and wine with others, as well as his belief in the power of food and wine to bring people together and create community, was behind the premise of Breaking Bread Wines.
The style of his red wines is defined by a flavor profile that is synonymous with carbonic maceration, or whole cluster fermentation. Erik believes that by keeping the grapes in their complete natural form as they come off the vine, with no destemming, the stem becomes part of the fermentation process and final product. As it turns out, the stem adds a piece of chemistry that is needed for balance in these wines because we pick the fruit less ripe, with lower sugar, so it has lower alcohol but higher acidity. The stems help balance out that acidity by bringing potassium into the mix.
John will present 5 wines including a Pet Nat (our love at first sip wine!), skin contact white, a whole cluster red and 2 others to be determined, possibly something from his Kokomo project. Join us, we promise you'll love them too! Get your tickets here, Breaking Bread

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

Audubon’s Cool Zoo with the Gator Run lazy river opens May 27, and it will operate weekends-only through the end of May.
"The Cool Zoo with the Gator Run offers great ways to have fun and stay cool while visiting the Zoo," said Audubon’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Uptown Facilities Daine Appleberry. "We are excited to reopen this popular attraction for the summer season."
Starting on May 29, the water park will be open daily until Aug. 5, when returns to weekends-only operation. The park closes for the season in September.
The details
Audubon Zoo guests will be able to cool off twice a day at the water park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. each day. The Cool Zoo closes every day from 1 to 2 p.m. for cleaning and maintenance.
All the fan-favorite features will be there: the alligator water slide, the spider monkey soaker, water-spitting snakes and shady spots for adults.
The Gator Run lazy river offers visitors the option to cool down by floating atop a tube along a 750-foot long course that is 3-feet deep and 10-feet wide. It also features two sand beaches and water cannons that can be used to spray other visitors as they float on down the river. It also includes showers, restrooms, lockers, outdoor seating, a private area for nursing mothers and the "Gator Bites'' concession stand.
Rafts are included in the admission price for Gator Run, and anyone shorter than 48 inches will need a life jacket supplied by Audubon Zoo.
Outside food and drinks are welcomed in both Cool Zoo and Gator Run, but the size of coolers and ice chests cannot exceed 28 quarts. Glass containers and disposable straws and lids are not permitted for the safety of the zoo's animals. Audubon may search coolers.
Get tickets
Cool Zoo tickets can be purchased online and at the zoo's front gate. Regular admission to Cool Zoo, including Gator Run, is $9 for Audubon Nature Institute Members and $12 for non-members, plus Audubon Zoo admission.

CONQUER KIDS' CANCER
Children, teens and even infants are diagnosed with cancer every day, but donations are drastically down for research to find cures. We can change that – and save lives.
Mark your calendars 📆 because the Raptor krewe is hosting a St. Baldrick's event on June 17th to raise funds and kick childhood cancer to the curb! 🎗️
Our event will help speed the search for cures, by supporting the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants. Research is hope, and you can give kids that hope.
Be part of this cause in two ways:
1️⃣ Become a participant: We're looking for shavees to shave your head and stand in solidarity with these brave kids. Let's show them they're not alone!
2️⃣ Donate: If you can't attend, you can still make a difference by donating directly on our event website. Every contribution counts, no matter the size.
Spread the word and invite your friends, family, and colleagues to join us.
Together, we can make a difference.

BREES DREAM FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NOLA PICKLEBALL FEST
Annual event to be held at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to serve as a major fundraiser for the Brees Dream Foundation
Brittany and Drew Brees announced today the creation of The NOLA Pickleball Fest, an annual event benefiting the Brees Dream Foundation. The inaugural event will be held August 10-13, 2023, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Brees and the staff of the Brees Dream Foundation have been working closely with local tourism leaders at the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and New Orleans & Company, as well as national companies Joola and The Kitchen, to organize all aspects of the event.
“Brittany and I could not be more excited to bring the first annual NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans,” says Drew Brees. Combining one of the fastest growing and most enjoyable sports alongside a city that knows how to host a party will make this one of the premier events of the summer. It will be great food, music, events, and plenty of pickleball all inside the Convention Center, as we crown amateur champions and raise proceeds for the Brees Dream Foundation that will go towards our ongoing efforts in New Orleans.”
The NOLA Pickleball Fest (“The NOLA”) benefitting the Brees Dream Foundation is a unique, festival-style pickleball tournament featuring 24 tournament quality PickleRoll courts, live music, a celebrity exhibition match featuring Drew Brees, VIP experiences and much more. The NOLA will have three divisions of round robin play: women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles for skill levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0+. There are two brackets to compete in: Open and 40 yrs. old and over. Featured matches will be played on a center court with grandstand seating as well as Kern Studio Mardi Gras floats for VIP viewing. Join us for an unforgettable experience and the ultimate pickleball party. To sign up or for more information, visit www.drewbrees.com.
“As pickleball participation continues to skyrocket, we’re honored and excited to be working with Drew and his team to create an annual pickleball festival that creates tourism for a higher purpose,” said Jay Cicero, President/CEO of the Sports Foundation. “The Brees Dream Foundation will distribute funds raised from the event to partner charitable organizations along the Gulf Coast. Given the combination of the sport’s popularity and charitable aspect of NOLA Pickleball Fest, it will surely be a hit among amateur and seasoned Pickleball players alike.”
“When it comes to sports, New Orleans is known for hosting iconic championship moments. With our singular, authentic culture and welcoming people, 26,0000 hotel rooms within two miles of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and unmatched hospitality, New Orleans is truly Built to Host,” said Walter J. Leger III, President & CEO of New Orleans & Company, the official destination sales, and marketing organization for the New Orleans tourism industry. “Crowds have always been drawn to New Orleans for sporting events of all types and sizes and now it is an honor to add the annual NOLA Pickleball Fest. This event will not only provide a critical summertime tourism boost for the New Orleans economy, but also help the entire community served by the Brees Dream Foundation.”
“The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is delighted to welcome the inaugural NOLA Pickleball Fest to New Orleans this August,” said Convention Center President Michael J. Sawaya. “Our involvement with NOLA Pickleball supports our mission to host events that positively impact the local economy. With the passion of the Brees Dream Foundation and the diligent support of local tourism leaders, there is no doubt the tournament will grow into the best tournament in the nation and benefit our community for years to come.”
Pickleball originated in the Pacific Northwest in the 1960s and combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is the fastest-growing sport in the United States with annual increases of millions of people playing, according to a 2023 participation report by the Association of Pickleball Professionals.
Registration for the tournament opens in early June. To register to play, visit www.drewbrees.com. To volunteer, visit www.gnosports.com/volunteer.
