⚜️NATIONAL WOMEN’S CHECKUP DAY
National Women’s Checkup Day on the second Monday in May each year focuses on the importance of regular routine visits for women.
As part of National Women’s Health Week, the observance provides ways to help women take steps to maintain better health. Routine health checkups provide an opportunity to catch problems before they become unmanageable. Speaking with your physician about risk factors, early signs and symptoms and concerns can help to alleviate minor daily issues and identify issues to watch. Additionally, your physician can recommend screenings and order baseline tests that can be used for comparison at a later time.
Yearly well-woman visits are important and should include discussions of your health habits and family history, setting health goals, and scheduling or receiving screenings or necessary exams. Screening would include blood pressure, cholesterol, cervical cancer, and others.

HAPPY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WEEK
May 8-12, 2023
This week, JEDCO joins hundreds of economic development organizations around the world to celebrate the work we do to create jobs, investment, and opportunities in our community. Created by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), Economic Development Week recognizes the contributions made by professional economic developers to create more economically vibrant and livable communities.
At JEDCO, we not only work to attract new businesses and support the growth and vitality of our existing businesses, but we are also heavily involved in workforce development, education, and quality of life. For over 35 years, JEDCO has helped to shape Jefferson Parish into a destination for global business and a hub for innovation. JEDCO is the longest continuously Accredited Economic Development Organization (AEDO) in Louisiana and the second longest-running AEDO in the Gulf South. It is one of only 71 economic development organizations in North America to receive this prestigious designation.
Recent wins include:
-
Working to bring the former Avondale Shipyard site back into commerce. Renamed Avondale Global Gateway, the iconic site is poised to become a multi-modal logistics hub. Global developer T. Parker Host announced plans to moves its headquarters to Avondale Global Gateway earlier this year. Shell and Gulf Wind Technology also announced a partnership to bring a wind power accelerator to the site, which positions Jefferson Parish as a major player in wind power.
-
Attracting and retaining global and national brands like US Foods, Sleep Number, Inland Seafood, and more
-
Financing small businesses and celebrating as they open their doors in Jefferson Parish, including (most recently) Yakuza House, McCord Butchery, and Studio KP. Debbie on the Levee and Kingfish Cider (where we'll be hosting events later this week) were also financed by JEDCO!
-
Supporting the iconic seafood industry with strategic support and the Seafood Assistance Enterprise (SEA) Fund.
-
Assisting in the development of a 1,500-square-foot mid-century model home in Terrytown, part of the Neighborhood Revitalization Strategic Plan to make our neighborhoods and housing stock more desirable for current and prospective residents
-
Driving growth in Churchill Park, a 480-acre, master-planned site on the West Bank that was born out of the first iteration of the Jefferson EDGE, Jefferson Parish's long term economic development strategic plan. JEDCO owns roughly 25 acres of shovel-ready property with big plans for the future.
We know that economic development is so much more than business retention and attraction. Our work is about building the foundation of a community where businesses want to be. We're looking at housing, mobility, infrastructure, education, accessibility, and policy. We're connected with partners in all of those areas and so many more. We know that the work we're doing now will have a long-term impact on the future of our business community and economy.
Watch our 2022 Year in Review video for a brief look at some of our most recent wins.
We are proud to be a leader in our industry and honored to serve the Jefferson Parish business community. This would not be possible without our Partners in Progess, the many business leaders, elected officials, organizations, and employees who help drive our economy forward.
All week long, we will be hosting events to show our appreciation for the many people who make Jefferson Parish an extraordinary community with vibrant industry and global reach. Be sure to check out our events calendar below to see how we're celebrating. We hope to see you around town!

May Bourbon of the Month:
Bardstown Origin Series Wheated Bottled-in-Bond
Bardstown Origin Series Wheated Bottled-in-Bond is a premium bourbon whiskey that is crafted using the finest ingredients and traditional distilling techniques. This bourbon is part of the Origin Series, which pays homage to the rich history and heritage of American whiskey-making.
What sets Bardstown Origin Series Wheated Bottled-in-Bond apart is its adherence to the strict Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. This means that the bourbon is made from a single distillery, in a single distilling season, and aged for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse. This ensures that the bourbon is of the highest quality.
When is comes to taste, Bardstown Origin Series Wheated Bottled-in-Bond is a complex and well-balanced whiskey. On the nose, you'll detect notes of vanilla, caramel, oak, and a hint of spice. On the palate, the bourbon is smooth and rich, with flavors of butterscotch, toffee, and dark chocolate. The finish is long and warming, with a touch of sweetness and a subtle smokiness.
Stop by Bourbon House for your complimentary pour!

NATIONAL COCONUT CREAM PIE DAY
National Coconut Cream Pie Day on May 8th celebrates its own slice of deliciousness. This delicious pie is made with a sweet coconut cream filling. Pie lovers know a thick layer of real whipped cream topped with toasted coconut make this pie irresistible.
There are plenty of pie holidays on the National Day Calendar. In fact, every month includes at least one. The last pie holiday we celebrated was National Blueberry Pie Day, kicking off the blueberry season. However, unlike blueberries, coconut trees produce their fruit all year long. And the milk and meat are processed for canning and drying, making it easily accessible for year-round baking.

A circa 1892 photograph of the Clay Statue at the intersection of Canal Street and Royal Street/St. Charles Avenue. The bronze statue by sculptor Joel T. Hart was commissioned in 1856 and dedicated on April 12, 1860. It quickly became a favorite meeting place for locals. However, it was also right in the middle of the city's main streetcar artery -- notice the streetcars going around the statue in this photograph. The statue was relocated to the center of Lafayette Square in 1900 where it may be seen today.

The Butter Krisp Restaurant opened at 2010 St. Charles Avenue near St. Andrew Street, seen here on October 29, 1941, in a photograph by Charles Franck from The Historic New Orleans Collection. The first doughnut factory opened in 1933 at 1903 St. Charles serving only coffee and doughnuts. Owner/operator Frank Restel was a veteran of the bakery business.
Two years later he moved the operation to 2010 St. Charles and expanded the menu offerings for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as offering a drive-thru service. Twenty tables and also counter service served customers 24-hours a day. The neon sign atop the building seen here was replaced with a large neon clock in the mid-1940s. The business was sold to horse-breeder Ed Rodriguez who began expanding the business in the mid-1950s.
In the early 1980s, the company’s principal locations were at 3507 Veterans Highway and 1333 South Clearview Parkway in Metairie, when they embarked upon an expansion program, targeting franchise opportunities on Canal Street, at Napoleon and St. Charles Avenue, at Crowder Road and I-10, at Lapalco and Barataria Boulevard, at Gentilly Boulevard and Elysian Fields, at Hickory and Jefferson in River Ridge, and on Airline Highway. They also offered opportunities in Laplace, Baton Rouge, Denham Springs, Mandeville, Hammond, Slidell, Hattiesburg, and Bay St. Louis.
The property is currently home to Toy’s Cleaners. The building on the corner of St. Andrew Street housing Mack Tire Company was torn down and replaced with a controversial modernistic Subway shop.
The Butter Krisp Restaurant was still operating in Covington, Louisiana, at 1105 Highway 190 as the Butter Krisp Diner, but has closed indefinitely after a roof collapse in April 2022.

Even as late as 1920 unloading bananas was a labor intensive proposition, as shown in this period photograph by Arnold Genthe (Library of Congress). United Fruit Company, founded in 1899) and Standard Fruit Company, whose predecessor was also founded in 1899, dominated the business and nearly all of it passed through the port of New Orleans. In 1885, bananas were second only to coffee as the principal import through New Orleans.
In an era before containerized freight shipment, cargo at the Port of New Orleans had to be manually loaded and unloaded. This break-bulk cargo could be bales of cotton, barrels or hogsheads of sugar, molasses, rice, or flour, sacks of coffee, tea, or spices. or wooden crates of anything from champagne to shoes. Of course, we have all seen bananas being unloaded by hand from man-to-man.

“Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies” was a 1969 film starring Tony Curtis, Dudley Moore, Terry-Thomas, Jack Hawking, and a cast of other notable international stars that portrayed an automobile race across Europe in slapstick comedy fashion that was popular at the time.
In 1912, Charles Glidden led a caravan from Detroit to New Orleans called the Glidden Tour. It was by no means a direct route. Cities across the country vied for the tour to pass through their city. The Progressive Union in New Orleans made the pitch to end the tour in New Orleans at the culmination of a meeting of the National Automobile Dealers and the caravan made their final leg south from Atlanta to Montgomery to Mobile to New Orleans.
The first photograph below from the archives of the Detroit Public Library shows a group of automobiles lined up on an unpaved road outside of New Orleans – and judging by the levee in the left background it might be River Road – waiting to begin the next leg of the tour. A local resident in his mule-drawn wagon heading in the opposite direction surveys the scene.
A number of different automobile models participated in the event – the Hupmobile (whose local sales agent was former New Orleans Pelicans owner Abner Powell), Flanders, Maxwell, and Hudson, among others, had “pathfinding expeditions” out in advance to locate gasoline filling stations and to arrange for mechanical repairs and spare tires as needed

JAZZ @ THE SANDBAR
ANNOUNCES SPRING 2023 SEASON
with 7 Sessions, First Time Guests
As Jazz at the Sandbar approaches its 30-year anniversary, it continues to fulfill its mission of providing direct mentoring by acclaimed jazz masters through concert performances with UNO Jazz Studies students. These experiential learning opportunities are an integral part of the Jazz Studies program, bringing to life the ideas and concepts shared in the classroom by the program’s exceptional faculty. Jazz at the Sandbar also provides the extended UNO community with the rare opportunity to see and hear world-class artists in an intimate setting, while observing the development of the next generation of jazz presenters and performers.
The program brings acclaimed local and global musicians to the UNO campus for weekly teaching artist residencies for daytime masters classes and intimate workshops, and then evening public performances where the students perform with the guest artist in a professional setting.
Typically, each of the Spring and Fall seasons of the Jazz at the Sandbar series host six sessions. This year, in a sort of post-pandemic comeback, the program returns to present eight sessions this year, with an additional guest teaching artist, and a season closing session featuring the end of semester recitals from the student musicians.
This year's Spring 2023 Season runs on
Wednesdays
at 7:00pm to 9:30pm
from March 22nd through May 10th:
SPRING 2023 SEASON LINEUP:
May 10: UNO Student Recitals
MAY 10
UNO Jazz Studies welcomes pianist Audrey Smith and guitarist Dylan Torrence to present their graduate recitals at Jazz @ the Sandbar. In addition, the Ernest and Shirley Svenson Jazz Composition Award will be announced, and the winning piece will be premiered.
Audrey Smith is a pianist/composer from Hillsborough, NC now living and working in New Orleans. She has performed at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, New Orleans Jazz National Historical Parks, the Baton Rouge Blues Festival, and numerous small local clubs and restaurants in New Orleans and the Southeast. She has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Byron Asher, Maurice “Mobetta” Brown, Amina Scott, and Herlin Riley.
Smith's repertoire selection for this recital is influenced by her desire to forward the works of female and non-binary artists. Her current focus is on reviving the compositions of Marian McPartland as well as Mary Lou Williams’ lesser-known compositions and arrangements for piano. Smith enjoys the freedom that the piano trio setting allows, writing her own music for her group as she continues to honor the traditions of bop, post-bop, and beyond. She’ll be joined by UNO alum Robin Sherman on bass, Ronan Cowan on drums, and a few surprise guests.
Audrey holds gratitude for the honor it is to be immersed in the culture of New Orleans, a place that’s contributed so much to the development of jazz, while allowing her North Carolina folk heritage to influence her music and artistic voice. She thanks her teachers at the piano for their continued guidance and encouragement: Victor Atkins, Oscar Rossignoli, and Dr. John Salmon.
Dylan Torrance is a New Orleans-based guitarist, composer, and educator who has been involved in the Crescent City music scene for over 10 years. He received his bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of New Orleans in 2012 where he studied with Hank Mackie, Steve Masakowski, and Brian Seeger. THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

Audubon’s Cool Zoo with the Gator Run lazy river opens May 13, and it will operate weekends-only through the end of May.
"The Cool Zoo with the Gator Run offers great ways to have fun and stay cool while visiting the Zoo," said Audubon’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Uptown Facilities Daine Appleberry. "We are excited to reopen this popular attraction for the summer season."
Starting on May 29, the water park will be open daily until Aug. 5, when returns to weekends-only operation. The park closes for the season in September.
The details
Audubon Zoo guests will be able to cool off twice a day at the water park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. each day. The Cool Zoo closes every day from 1 to 2 p.m. for cleaning and maintenance.
All the fan-favorite features will be there: the alligator water slide, the spider monkey soaker, water-spitting snakes and shady spots for adults.
The Gator Run lazy river offers visitors the option to cool down by floating atop a tube along a 750-foot long course that is 3-feet deep and 10-feet wide. It also features two sand beaches and water cannons that can be used to spray other visitors as they float on down the river. It also includes showers, restrooms, lockers, outdoor seating, a private area for nursing mothers and the "Gator Bites'' concession stand.
Rafts are included in the admission price for Gator Run, and anyone shorter than 48 inches will need a life jacket supplied by Audubon Zoo.
Outside food and drinks are welcomed in both Cool Zoo and Gator Run, but the size of coolers and ice chests cannot exceed 28 quarts. Glass containers and disposable straws and lids are not permitted for the safety of the zoo's animals. Audubon may search coolers.
Get tickets
Cool Zoo tickets can be purchased online and at the zoo's front gate. Regular admission to Cool Zoo, including Gator Run, is $9 for Audubon Nature Institute Members and $12 for non-members, plus Audubon Zoo admission.
