NATIONAL CRAWFISH DAY

National Crawfish Day on April 17th celebrates one of the South’s most iconic foods. Each year the mudbug brings out not only a desire for newspaper-covered picnic tables but a language all its own.

A smaller, fresh-water cousin to the lobster, crawfish provide a unique flavor to many homegrown Southern dishes. Baked or boiled, crawfish is usually seasoned with a distinctive brand of southern heat. One particularly popular way to serve crawfish is a boil, paper towels required.

If you’ve never been to a crawfish boil, you don’t understand the meaning of digging into your food. An unbridled desire overcomes you as the aroma hits you to devour a massive pile of corn, potatoes, and sausage. And let’s not forget a variety of shellfish that go by names such as ditchbug, crayfish, crawdad, crawpappy, among other amusements.

Which words best complete these example sentences?

A) Sadly, divorce often fosters the ____________ of your ability to parent as you would have preferred. B) Because of his previous arrests, he had to face the ____________ of his license being suspended.

Local Genealogy Expert Explains

How to Use FamilySearch User Group on FaceBook

METAIRIE – Steve Williams, a local resident who co-founded the FamilySearch Users Group on Facebook, will speak at 7 p.m., Monday, April 17, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

The session – part of the meeting of the Genealogical Research Society of New Orleans – is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.

FamilySearch Users Group on Facebook is a forum to learn, discuss topics and help others. Williams will share his insights on navigating FamilySearch and suggest techniques for getting the most from this vast resource. His presentation will cover a variety of FamilySearch topics, such as searching through catalogs and images, making corrections, and collaborating with others using FamilySearch Tree.

Williams created FamilySearch Users Group with a friend five years ago. The site has grown to more than 17,000 Facebook users. His first experience with genealogy occurred when he was very young, following his dad through cemeteries and courthouses. Later in life, he worked as an intelligence analyst for a federal law enforcement agency, building his skills for finding information. He began applying those skills to genealogy, renewing his interest in it.

"When my dad became sick, I had a lot of free time comparing his notes with online databases," Williams says. "And since he never touched a computer, I had a clean slate to work on."

For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, Manager of Adult Programming for the library, at 504-889-8143

NATIONAL CHEESEBALL DAY

April 17th kicks off National Cheeseball Day and recognizes a party food that can sometimes be the centerpiece of a spread. You can choose from two ways to celebrate, too! Or plan your party and serve both!

  • A cheese spread comes in the shape of a ball served with crackers, most often around Christmas in the U.S. This cheeseball is commonly made with softened cream cheese and other ingredients.
  • Cheese puffs are a puffed corn snack coated with a mixture of cheese or cheese-flavored powders. Cheese puffs are manufactured by extruding heated corn dough through a die that forms the particular shape, most likely a ball shape.

No matter which one you celebrate, both make for terrific snacking.

The first episode of the HBO series ‘Treme’ aired on April 10, 2010, thirteen years ago almost to the day. By the time I moved to New Orleans in August 2011, the series was a bit more than half into a 4 season run and I had already visited New Orleans many, many times. I thought I knew so much about this city but learned more every episode of this fantastic production. The last episode of Treme aired on December 29th, 2013. Almost ten years later, I’ve been wanting to re-visit the series for awhile now and I started that journey today. Just three episodes in, I realize having lived in the Quarter for the last 12 years has given me a whole new perspective on the series. Still absolutely wonderful but now I see very familiar faces and very familiar places…each one seen with fresh eyes and all bring a new smile. But also, within these moments, from time to time, a tear will sprout from my heart. Many of the familiar faces…Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, as well as many others, are no longer with us. However, all reside deep in the soul of each of us and our beloved city, and it occurs to me, as we close in on the last day of the 40th annual French Quarter Fest tomorrow, each of these fabulous musicians still cause a stir in our hearts every time we hear their tunes.

Ain't There No More New Orleans

BBQ Cauliflower Wings

Not only is cauliflower nutritious, but it is also incredibly versatile! You can enjoy it mashed, roasted, in soup, in pizza crust, as rice, in “steak” form, turned into tots, and cooked up as wings. This BBQ cauliflower recipe from Eat With Clarity is not only delicious, but it is a great lighter alternative to chicken wings. Suffice it to say, this BBQ cauliflower wing recipe will not disappoint. Serve and enjoy immediately for maximum crispiness.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cauliflower
  • ¾ cup dairy or non-dairy milk
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 12 ounces (1 1/2 cups) bbq sauce

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Chop the cauliflower into medium sized florets.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together salt, onion powder, garlic powder, flour & milk.

Add the cauliflower to the batter and mix to coat each piece. Toss in breadcrumbs.

Add the cauliflower to a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 25 minutes, turn the oven off, then let sit for an additional 5 minutes. The wings should be golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes.

Add the cauliflower to a bowl and coat with the BBQ sauce. Serve immediately.

Katy Simpson Smith in conversation with Jami Attenberg

April 18 • 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us Tuesday, April 18th to celebrate the launch of Katy Simpson Smith’s latest novel, The Weeds!

Katy Simpson Smith will be in conversation with Jami Attenberg.

Two women, connected across time, edge toward transgression in pursuit of their desires.

A Mississippi woman pushes through the ruin of the Roman Colosseum, searching for plants. She has escaped her life, signed up to catalog all the species growing in this place. Crawling along the stones, she wonders how she has landed here, a reluctant botanist amid a snarl of tourists in comfortable sandals. She hunts for a scientific agenda and a direction of her own.

In 1854, a woman pushes through the jungle of the Roman Colosseum, searching for plants. As punishment for her misbehavior, she has been indentured to the English botanist Richard Deakin, for whom she will compile a flora. She is a thief, and she must find new ways to use her hands. If only the woman she loves weren’t on a boat, with a husband. But love isn’t always possible. She logs 420 species.

Through a list of seemingly minor plants and their uses—medical, agricultural, culinary—these women calculate intangible threats: a changing climate, the cost of knowledge, and the ways repeated violence can upend women’s lives. They must forge their own small acts of defiance and slip through whatever cracks they find. How can anyone survive?

Lush, intoxicating, and teeming with mischief, Katy Simpson Smith’s The Weeds is a tense, mesmerizing page-turner about science and survival, the roles women are given and have taken from them, and the lives they make for themselves.

Katy Simpson Smith was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. She is the author of the novels The Story of Land and Sea, a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice and one of Vogue’s Best Books of 2014; Free Men; and The Everlasting, a New York Times Best Historical Fiction Book of 2020. Her writing has appeared in The Paris Review, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Oxford American, Granta, Literary Hub, and elsewhere. She received a PhD in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars, and is also the author of We Have Raised All of You: Motherhood in the South, 1750-1835. She lives in New Orleans.

Jami Attenberg has written about food, travel, books, relationships and urban life for The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, the Sunday Times, Slate, and others. All This Could Be Yours was published in 2019 by HMH Books and Serpent’s Tail (UK), as well as in Italy, Germany, China, and Brazil. Her work has been published in a total of sixteen languages.

Her debut collection of stories, Instant Love, was published in 2006, followed by the novels The Kept Man and The Melting Season. Her fourth book, The Middlesteins, was published in October 2012. It appeared on The New York Times bestseller list, and was published in ten countries in 2013. It was also a finalist for both the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction and the St. Francis College Literary Prize. A fifth book, Saint Mazie, was published in 2015 and has been optioned by Fable Pictures. Her sixth book, All Grown Up, was published in 2017 and was a national bestseller, appearing on numerous year-end lists.

In 2024 she will publish a new novel, and also a creativity book, 1000 Words:A Guide to Staying Creative, Focused, and Productive All-Year Round.

She lives in New Orleans, LA.

FOR THE LOVE OF COLOR!

MUSEUM NOW OFFERS ENCHROMA GLASSES FOR COLOR BLIND AUDIENCES TO EXPERIENCE COLOR

As part of our mission of accessibility and inclusion, Ogden Museum of Southern Art has partnered with EnChroma to make the colors in our artwork accessible to the color blind. Color blind guests can now borrow EnChroma glasses for color blindness at Ogden Museum for the duration of their visit.

Imagine being unable to see all the colors in a beautiful painting, a flower, a sunset, or the color of a loved one’s eyes? While people with normal color vision see over one million shades and hues, those with color vision deficiency only see up to 10% of colors. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are color blind: 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%). That means that over 1.9 million people in Louisiana and over 160,000 people in New Orleans are color blind and yet until now no museum in the state of Louisiana or in the city of New Orleans included accessibility options for this significant population.

Ogden Museum is proud to be the first museum in Louisiana to offer this new option for color blind guests.

Ask for Enchroma glasses at the front desk when you purchase your tickets to experience our art in full color!

Friday Night Wine School, Premium Sake Selections with Chris Johnson, World Sake Imports

Friday, May 12, 2023

As much as we love sake here at Swirl, we understand that purchasing it can be intimidating - the labels are confusing, the information mysterious - how many times have you looked at sake on display in a store and walked away? It’s just so…foreign. And unfortunately as Americans, most of us are familiar with sake in its most common form – at the sushi restaurant, served in a plain white carafe, and usually piping hot. Drinking this type of low quality, “house” sake warm is a must, as it masks the flaws and takes the sharp edge off some of the harsher flavors. It is generally of the lowest quality, sometimes described as “jet fuel” by sake aficionados.

Premium sake is a lot like quality wine - just like great wines are defined by their terroir, premium sake is defined by local geography, the ingredients (water, rice, koji and yeast), and the personality and skills of the brewmaster, or toji, all of which play a role in shaping the palate. These sakes tend to have much more elegant and subtle flavors carefully curated by the brewers, and heating will potentially destroy those flavors. Depending on the yeast used and the polishing level of the rice, some can be more light and fruity while others more savory and full. It is a complex beverage that is fantastic for food pairings, and not just with Asian food.

Always looking for educational opportunities, we are excited to hold our first sake focused Friday Night Wine School with Chris Johnson from World Sake Imports. Chris is a saké sommelier certified by the Saké Service Institute and a certified WSET Level 3 Saké Educator, and in 2013 earned the distinguished title of Saké Samurai. He'll discuss how sake is made, the different quality levels and styles, along with wine parallels and pairings. We hope you'll join us! Go here to reserve your spots, Premium Sake

Love Louisiana Seafood?? Most of you who shop with us know they we just love giving suggestions on food and wine pairings. So when I told the staff I’d like to do a series on staff picks for specific foods and activities, I received some pretty quick answer for what they like to drink with seafood.

Seafood season here in Louisiana kicks into high gear right after Mardi Gras. Partially because of Lent and maybe a little to do with warmer temps and crawfish availability, this time of year is heaven for seafood lovers. How lucky are we to have sources for everything from blue crab to shrimp, crawfish, and oysters, not to mention the abundant selection of fish from drum, to red snapper, redfish, sheepshead, mahi mahi and more? Check out our staff picks here, Our Seafood Friendly Wine Picks

swirl + 1000 figs = yum!!

Did you know you can eat delicious food from 1000 Figs at Swirl? Here's how it works - get a table (indoors or outdoors) at Swirl, order your food at Figs and tell them you have a table at swirl. Order your wine at Swirl and have a seat, sipping on your wine til they bring you plates of heavenly food! How great is that?!?pesto & pigato I can't eat pesto without thinking of its famous home in Italy, the Ligurian coast. A small and breathtakingly gorgeous region, Liguria sits on the Mediterranean Sea in Northwest Italy. And of course the perfect pairing comes in a the form of a local wine made from Pigato...go here for the recipe & pairing,  Pesto & Pigatoneed orange?

...we have a few! As the category of natural, minimal intervention wine continues to grow, winemakers are increasingly turning to an age-old winemaking practice in their white wine production. Before we had all of this technology at our fingertips, winemaking in the ancient world was a simple practice - read moreBoozy Drinks Anyone?
