NATIONAL VINYL RECORD DAY
Get spinning on August 12 with National Vinyl Record Day! Whether it's the Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Monkees, Johnny Cash, or the Bee Gees, vinyl records have a sound all their own. Most will agree, vintage vinyl is as classic as the bands themselves.
The day encourages listening to all kinds of music on vinyl records. Spin a disc on a jukebox or show off your style by demonstrating your hip-hop moves.
About Vinyl Records
When vinyl records first came on the market they had other names. Some of them were a gramophone record or a phonograph record. They are also called records for short. The analog sound storage medium consists of a flat disc. The sound is recorded by inscribing it on a modulated spiral groove.
Depending on the speed at which the sound was recorded, the vinyl record will need to be played at a corresponding speed on the record player. This is referred to as rotational speed. The revolutions per minute (RPMs) of the more popular vinyls are:
Other features of vinyl records included reproductive accuracy or fidelity (High Fidelity or Hi-Fi, Orthophonic and Full-Range), their time capacity (long-playing or single), and the number of channels of audio provided (mono, stereo or quadraphonic).
Vinyl records were also sold in different sizes such as:
By 1991, vinyl records left the mainstream. However, manufacturers continue to produce them. Collectors and audiophiles increasingly desire the unique sound that only vinyl can produce. Since 2006, vinyl record sales continue to increase according to Pitchfork.com. Even more dramatic sales started hitting the markets beginning in 2012.

NATIONAL MIDDLE CHILD DAY
Each year on August 12, National Middle Child Day honors that in-between child in the family. Of course, larger families celebrate more than one middle child, too!
Many believe birth order plays a pivotal role in the personalities of children. For example, the Middle Child Syndrome describes the firstborn as the leader and the role-player. Meanwhile, the youngest one earns the title of the baby family. Therefore, the middle child's role remains undefined.
Birth order may also contribute to the Big Five personality traits: extroversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. One personality study also claims that middle children tend to be artistic and creative.
No matter what the personality tests and therapists say, the day directs us to focus on the middle child. The day directs parents and siblings to pull out all the stops. Make your middle-born family members feel special.

Perseid meteor shower 2024: How and when to view the brightest, most colorful shower of the whole year
The Perseids will hit their peak next week across the Northern Hemisphere. Here’s how to see it where you live.
Cassie Morris·Reporter

On Aug. 11 through Aug. 13, the Perseid meteor shower will be visible in night skies all across the Northern Hemisphere — no telescope required.
The Perseid meteor shower, commonly known as the Perseids, is considered the brightest, most prolific meteor shower of the year. With about 50 to 100 visible meteors per hour streaking across the sky with long “wakes” of light and color, it’s one of the most plentiful showers.
Because of this, the Perseids are the highlight of many a meteor hunter's calendar — but you don’t have to be an astronomer to spot this cosmic display. Here’s how to see the Perseid meteor shower in your own backyard.
☄️ What is the Perseid meteor shower?
The Perseids, named for the constellation Perseus (the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to come, called the radiant), are leftover particles ejected from the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Earth every 133 years.
Behind these particles trails a cloud of dust and debris — the Perseid cloud — which Earth passes through every year. As our atmosphere collides with this debris, the comet particles disintegrate, creating fiery, colorful streaks in our sky.
Because of its high amount of fireballs — large explosions of light and color — the Perseids are one of the most vibrant showers. These explosions appear very bright and persist longer than those in the average meteor shower.
🗓️ When is the Perseid meteor shower?
The Perseid meteor shower is active and visible annually from mid-July to late August.
This year, the shower will peak between Aug. 11 through Aug. 13, with visibility a few days on either side of that date range.
NASA predicts that skygazers might be able to see 100 meteors per hour during this peak.
⏰ Best time to see the Perseid meteor shower
The Perseids are best viewed from midnight to dawn, when the radiant is highest in the sky — though it is possible to view meteors from the shower as early as 10 p.m.
You will see the most meteors right before dawn, so set your alarm clock early — or be prepared to stay up late!
🔎 Where to look for the Perseid meteor shower
Although the constellation Perseus is the radiant point of the shower, it is not the only place in the sky you should look. So long as the sky is clear, and you’re far enough away from light pollution, the meteors can appear anywhere.
And the more sky, the better: Find an area with a clear view of the horizon, away from trees and tall buildings.
As for how to see the Perseid meteor shower, your naked eye is best. Binoculars and telescopes will only restrict the size of the sky visible to you.

8 AM - 12 PM
Uptown Square
200 Broadway Street at the River
Directions and Parking Tips
The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.
RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.
From I-10
From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

Equinophobia or hippophobia is a psychological fear of horses. Equinophobia is derived from the Greek word φόβος (phóbos), meaning "fear" and the Latin word equus, meaning "horse". The term hippophobia is also derived from the Greek word phóbos with the prefix derived from the Greek word for horse, ἵππος (híppos). An example of the phobia can be found in Freud's psychoanalytic study of Little Hans. | | | |

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 5
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL JULIENNE FRIES DAY
Each year, on National Julienne Fries Day on August 12, everyone fries up skinny sliced potatoes for a delicious and crunchy treat. We love food holidays of all kinds, and National Julienne Fries Day!
Cut into thin, uniform matchsticks, julienne fries tend to be crispier and are often called "shoestring fries." It's no surprise this delicate and precise cut is a French favorite. Just look to the 1722 edition of Francois Massialot's Le Cuisinier Royal et Bourgeoi for the oldest known written reference to the julienne cut.
Origins
Although no one knows the origin of the julienne cut, Eneas Dallas, in the book Kettner's Book of the Table written in 1877, analyzes the sources of the julienne cut. One recipe interests him, called Julienne Soup. The recipe calls cooks to cut all the vegetables,(such as turnips, carrots, potatoes), into long strips or straws. Another recipe may share a clue. A woodsorrel soup recipe required two cuts to be made on each leaf. Not one or three, but two. By doing so would create a trefoil or a trinity, which would be significant to some Christian or superstitious cooks.
According to Dallas, the people of Europe knew the woodsorrel by many names. The French knew it as La petite oseille and surelle (among many others). In England, it was called stubwort, sour trefoil, or cuckoo's meat. Another unusual name for the woodsorrel was Alleluia or Allelujah. By this name also it was found in Italy and Spain. The word would often become corrupted or manipulated. For example, the scientific name for woodsorrel is Conserva Lajulce. Dallas carries this point to Italy, where the name becomes Juliola.
Dallas also suggests that when woodsorrel is cooked, the leaves cook away. The soup leaves only the twigs or the representative julienne cuts.
Despite all these possibilities, National Julienne Fries Day promotes noshing, not superstitions. However, sharing the origins may impress your friends.

In 1936, Coca-Cola was already a staple in American culture, well on its way to becoming a global icon. The sight of Coca-Cola delivery trucks loaded and ready to hit the road was a common and welcome scene, emblematic of the brand's extensive reach and the burgeoning consumer culture of the time.
The 1930s were a pivotal decade for Coca-Cola. The company had survived Prohibition by marketing itself as a wholesome, non-alcoholic beverage, and the end of Prohibition in 1933 allowed it to resume its full marketing strategies. By 1936, Coca-Cola had solidified its status as a beloved refreshment, thanks in part to its innovative advertising campaigns and the expansion of its bottling system.
Coca-Cola trucks from this era were often brightly painted with the brand's iconic red and white colors, featuring the unmistakable logo that promised refreshment and quality. These trucks were crucial in ensuring that Coca-Cola was available in stores, soda fountains, and restaurants across the country, maintaining the supply chain that kept the fizzy beverage in constant circulation.
The delivery trucks of 1936 were more than just vehicles; they were mobile advertisements, spreading the Coca-Cola brand wherever they went. Each truckload represented the meticulous efforts of bottlers, drivers, and salespeople working together to ensure that this beloved drink reached every corner of America.
During this period, Coca-Cola was also involved in significant marketing ventures, including sponsorships and tie-ins with popular events and celebrities, further embedding itself in the fabric of American life. The trucks, loaded and ready to go, symbolized not just the distribution of a product, but the widespread influence and presence of Coca-Cola in daily life.
These scenes of loaded trucks ready for delivery encapsulate a moment in history when Coca-Cola was cementing its legacy as a global beverage leader. The image of these trucks is a reminder of the brand’s deep roots in American culture and its journey towards international acclaim.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. An eclectic group of adults… playing six mid-pubescents, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. [Rated: PG-13]

So if you want a hot pizza for the whopping price of $10, come at 12:30, buy a glass of wine and settle down in the AC. Just want a slice? $3 each. The only rule (we hate rules) is that you eat your pizza in-house while drinking our wine. Pretty simple…please respect the rule :)

Another big piece of the Saints 2024 schedule has officially been finalized, with dates and times established for each of the Saints' three preseason games.
The team will have its first two preseason games out west due to their training camp being held in Irvine, California.

As is typical with the preseason, start times and days are all over the map. The Saints will kick off their preseason slate with a Saturday night game, and also start an hour later than a typical Sunday kick in the finale, hosted at the Caesars Superdome.

When in Irvine, the Saints will hold two days joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 in leadup to their Aug. 18 preseason showdown at San Francisco.

2024 Full Moon schedule
(all times Eastern)
- Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
- Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
- Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
- Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
- Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.
To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.
Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail
Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
