. NATIONAL HARD CANDY DAY
A favorite of young and old alike, National Hard Candy Day on December 19th, recognizes the sweet tooth in all of us.
Most hard candies are 100% sugar with flavoring and colors added. To achieve a hard candy, confectioners boil a sugar syrup to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is reached, the hot, pliable sugar is poured into molds or rolled and folded into shapes and left to cool. Once cool, solid sugar becomes hardened and brittle.
The first hard candies, such as lemon drops and peppermints, were likely prescribed as a remedy for stomach ailments.
Hard candy became popular in the seventeenth century as sugar prices fell. Previously, hard candy was something that only the well-to-do could afford. By the mid-1800s, over 400 companies were manufacturing this popular treat.
In 2015, Jolly Rancher surpassed Werther's Original as the best-selling hard candy. Other popular hard candies include Dum Dum Pops, Life Savers, Tootsie Roll Pops, and Charms Blow Pop.

Gretna plans to buy an abandoned hotel off West Bank Expressway for $5 million. Here's why.

The city of Gretna is planning to spend $5.335 million to purchase a long-abandoned Holiday Inn off the West Bank Expressway with hopes of demolishing the property to make way for a new commercial development.
Vacant for much of the past decade, the 300-room hotel at 100 West Bank Expressway has in recent years become a "public nuisance," said Gretna Mayor Belinda Constant. "Today, it houses vagrants."
Given the property's layout, it has been difficult for Gretna to market the hotel to major flagships, Constant said. Much like a motel, you enter your room through a door that's accessible from the parking lot.
"None of the major hotels will support a hotel that is that unprotected," Constant said. "If you think of hotels today, you walk into a lobby as the only point of entry. That’s impossible to create on this site. It's a security and safety issue."
Constant said "third and fourth tier" hoteliers have expressed interest in the site but said they don't command the name or reputation that's required to fill out a 300-room hotel.
"It's a huge property," she said. "It's not a boutique property."
Gretna's decision to acquire the property is the latest in a string of government-funded real estate projects in the city. Jefferson Parish government is spending $2.78 million to renovate a 113-year-old Gretna building into a co-working space. The Jefferson Parish Council is also hoping to spend $8 million to construct a brewery on what is now a parish-owned parking lot in Gretna.
The hotel Gretna is planning to purchase was built during the oil boom of the 1970s, when "people were coming and going from all over the place" and needed somewhere to stay, said Gretna City Council member Jackie Berthelot. After the price of petroleum plummeted in the 1980s, causing widespread economic pain in Louisiana, the hotel lost much of its customer base, Berthelot said.
The site is now a hotspot for crime, Constant said. "People are arrested there every other night," she said, adding that homeless people often sleep in the abandoned building.
The vacant hotel is located less than a mile away from the Oasis Motel, which has come under scrutiny from city officials for the quantity of 911 calls and overdose deaths at the site.
Constant said she's already signed a purchase agreement for 100 West Bank Expressway and expects the deal to close sometime early next year. Joseph Silberman, the Brooklyn-based businessman who owns the property, didn't respond to a request for comment.
Berthelot said it will cost around $1 million to demolish. Still, it's unclear how Gretna will leverage its new asset.
"Maybe we stay the property owner. Maybe we lease the property," Constant said. "There are lots of things we need to evaluate."
Constant said she hopes whatever comes next will be a boon for Gretna taxpayers. "We see it as a huge economic opportunity because it is our biggest commercial corridor in the city," she said.

What is the definition of "prolix"?
Frustratingly slow
Short and concise
Excessively fast
Tediously lengthy
What is the definition of "prolix"?
Tediously lengthy
prolix pronunciation: proh-liks
Definition: excessively lengthy or wordy in speech or writing, often to the point of being tiresome or boring
Origin: The word "prolix" originated from the Latin word "prolixus," which means extended or prolonged.
Example: After listening to the prolix speech, the audience began to lose interest and grew restless.
"Tediously lengthy" perfectly encapsulates the definition of "prolix." When something is described as prolix, it means it is excessively long or wordy, often causing boredom or weariness. A prolix piece of writing or a prolix speech tends to be drawn out, using an unnecessary number of words or details that may detract from the main point or message. The term "tediously lengthy" accurately portrays the tiresome nature of prolixity, highlighting the potential monotony and wearisome experience it can bring to the audience or reader.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in a New Adaptation by Patrick Barlow
Join us as we bring to life the classic tale of 'A Christmas Carol' at the Marquette Theatre on the Loyola campus.
About the Event
Celebrate the holiday season with Crescent City Stage in what we hope becomes a new annual tradition.
The Performance
Patrick Barlow, writer of the Broadway and West End hit The 39 Steps, has retold Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. This thrilling adaptation uses only five actors to bring some of Dickens' most beloved characters to life. From Scrooge and Tiny Tim to Bob Cratchit and Mrs. Fezziwig, Barlow's A Christmas Carol uses nothing more than some simple props, fresh physicality, and the power of imagination to convey this timeless story of redemption. Witness Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from a stingy miser to a man who generously celebrates the spirit of the season all year long, in this highly theatrical adaptation.

NATIONAL OATMEAL MUFFIN DAY
Enjoy a delicious breakfast or snack on National Oatmeal Muffin Day. It's an excellent way to celebrate on December 19th annually.
Known for its health benefits, millions of people start each day with an oatmeal muffin. Oatmeal includes health benefits for our hearts. Finding ways to incorporate it into our diets increases the opportunities to reap those benefits. Oatmeal muffins are another way to enjoy oatmeal.
The American muffin is similar in size and shape to a cupcake. Recipes for oatmeal muffins began to appear in American cookbooks in the mid-1800s. Raisins, bananas, blueberries and other healthy fruits often compliment oatmeal muffins. Add nuts for even more health benefits and texture, too.

But he also predicted shortages of all kinds of paper products. Shortages did materialize and shoppers faced empty shelves from coast to coast. Suppliers and purchasing agents were unable to fill orders.

Twas the night before Christmas an' all t'ru de house,

De chirren been nezzle good snug on de flo',

De Mama in de fireplace done roas' up de ham,

Den out on de by-you dey got such a clatter,
Make soun' like old Boudreau done fall off his ladder.
I run like a rabbit to got to de do',

As I look out de do'in de light o' de moon,
I t'ink, "Mahn, you crazy or got ol' too soon."
Cux dere on de by-you w'en I stretch ma'neck stiff,
Dere's eight alligator a pullin' de skiff.
An' a little fat drover wit' a long pole-ing stick,

So he run out de do' an, he clim' to de roof,
He ain' no fool, him for to make one more goof.
He jump in his skiff an' crack his big whip,
De' gator move down, An don' make one slip.
An' I hear him shout loud as a splashin' he go,
"Merry Christmas to all 'til I saw you some mo'!"
"Laugh and the world will laugh with you."
Don't laugh .... go away you are no fun.

Photo dated: December 18, 1972
An Old Vegetable Cart, loaded with farm produce and drawn by a mule, makes its way through neighborhood streets in vicinity of St. Claude and Elysian Fields Avenues.
The man holding the reins cried out about his fresh cabbages, turnip greens, lettuce and other commodities as housewives came out of their homes to buy.
It was once a common scene in New Orleans, that has just faded away.

French Quarter - New Orleans
1300 Royal Street
Famed photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston moved to New Orleans in the latter part of her career.
Her home was located on 1132 Bourbon Street.
Early Career
She took portraits of many famous contemporaries, including suffragette Susan B. Anthony, writer Mark Twain and Booker T. Washington, principal of the Tuskegee Institute.
Well connected among elite society, she was commissioned by magazines to do "celebrity" portraits, such as Alice Roosevelt's wedding portrait.
Having grown up in a family that traveled in elite circles of the capital, Johnston built on her connections and familiarity with the Washington political scene: she was appointed as official White House photographer for the Harrison, Cleveland, McKinley, Roosevelt, and Taft presidential administrations.
Although her relentless traveling was curtailed by gasoline rationing in the Second World War, the tireless Johnston continued to photograph.
She bought a house in the French Quarter of New Orleans in 1940, and retired there in 1945.
She died in New Orleans in 1952 at the age of eighty-eight.
A remarkable woman who lived a full life

City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks
Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour
New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.
“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”
Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.
Highlights this year include:
2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays
Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included
Multiple dedicated Bike Nights
Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”
Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate
Holiday-themed Storyland
Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship
New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland
“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”
City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.
Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.
Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.
“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.
This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.
New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.
The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.
The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.
"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."
The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.
“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”
“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”
Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb. Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.
“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."
“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

DELFEAYO MARSALIS
& The Uptown Jazz Orchestra
EVERY WEDNESDAY in DECEMBER!
That's right! After nearly 4 years, Delfeayo and the Big Band return home to Wednesdays at Snug Harbor!
Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers, and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…” (Los Angeles Times), he is “…one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” (San Francisco Examiner).
Early influences on Delfeayo's style include J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, Tyree Glenn, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington’s trombone masters. From the age of 17 until the present, he has produced over 100 recordings for major artists, including Harry Connick Jr, Spike Lee, Terence Blanchard, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and his father and brothers.
In January 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton, and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, thus dubbing them
"America's First Family of Jazz."
On packing a full jazz orchestra into a tiny historic jazz club: "Whatever you have to do," the trombonist says philosophically. But when the band plays the swing and bebop hits from the 1930s through the 1960s, the music is just as tight. From Mardi Gras music to modern jazz, this band does it all.
An intimate experience like no other!
Shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm.
Doors at 7:00pm & 9:00pm.

We're happy to bring a piece of the past back to WYES starting this weekend. Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.
Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. It begins Saturday in the kitchen of the legendary Chef Warren Leruth, and you'll see many other local icons below in the weeks to come. For all the episodes, the distinctive voices of Mary Lou Conroy and Andres Calandria narrate, with original music from the Charlie Byrd Trio, the Dukes of Dixieland and Banu Gibson. “The holiday season can be challenging for families facing financial hardships, and we firmly believe that every child deserves the joy of unwrapping toys and gifts during this special time,” said Elroy James, President of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, Inc.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with Toys for Tots to spread cheer and ensure that the
joy of the season touches every child, regardless of their circumstances.”
Since joining forces with Toy for Tots in 2006 and with the help of generous donations, the annual event has yielded thousands of toys for children in the New Orleans community. The Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, Inc. remains dedicated to giving back and creating a positive impact on the lives of those in need. This event exemplifies our commitment, aiming to bring joy and happiness to families during the holidays.
About the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, Inc.
The Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, founded in 1909, is New Orleans’ largest predominantly African American carnival organization
known for its iconic Mardi Gras day parade and the most sought-after parade throw, the hand painted coconuts. Inspired by theater, the
Zulu tradition started from humble beginnings with costumes designed to pay homage to the members’ African ancestry. The history
is illustrious and at times colorful but has remained an integral part of the New Orleans culture for more than 100 years. For more

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Professor Carl Nivale
Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!
#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique
https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...
A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.
Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.
What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.
- This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
- The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.
What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
