NATIONAL HARD CANDY DAY
A favorite of young and old alike, National Hard Candy Day on December 19th, recognizes the sweet tooth in all of us.
Most hard candies are 100% sugar with flavoring and colors added. To achieve a hard candy, confectioners boil a sugar syrup to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is reached, the hot, pliable sugar is poured into molds or rolled and folded into shapes and left to cool. Once cool, solid sugar becomes hardened and brittle.
The first hard candies, such as lemon drops and peppermints, were likely prescribed as a remedy for stomach ailments.
Hard candy became popular in the seventeenth century as sugar prices fell. Previously, hard candy was something that only the well-to-do could afford. By the mid-1800s, over 400 companies were manufacturing this popular treat.
- In 2015, Jolly Rancher surpassed Werther’s Original as the best-selling hard candy. Other popular hard candies include Dum Dum Pops, Life Savers, Tootsie Roll Pops, and Charms Blow Pop.

Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean / La Nueva Orleans y el Caribe españoles
A bilingual exhibition / Una exposición bilingüe
December 20, 2022–January 22, 2023 /
Tuesday/martes–Saturday/sábado, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m; Sunday/domingo, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
520 Royal Street, Tricentennial Wing, 1st Floor
Free ticketed admission / Acceso gratuito con entrada
About the Exhibition / Sobre la exposición
New Orleans has long been identified—by locals, tourists, and historians alike—with its French heritage. A groundbreaking exhibition at The Historic New Orleans Collection restores balance to that assessment. During four decades under Spanish rule (1762–1803), the city experienced natural disaster, diplomatic tensions, and demographic transformation. Despite numerous challenges, Spanish New Orleans morphed from a poorly managed outpost on the edge of an empire to a highly urbanized colonial capital—one enriched by the racial and cultural diversity for which it is celebrated today.
Rare Artifacts come to New Orleans for Exhibition on Spanish Colonial Era
Free bilingual display on view Oct. 20, 2022–Jan. 22, 2023
Features more than 120 objects — including maps, documents, furniture, paintings, books and more — from THNOC’s permanent holdings as well as from several institutions in Spain, Mexico and the United States. The display is the first and only time this selection of objects will be presented together in one space.
In a first for THNOC, “Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean / La Nueva Orleans y el Caribe españoles” will be presented in both English and Spanish.
“Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean” will be on view on the first level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal St. in the French Quarter from Oct. 29, 2022, through Jan. 22, 2023. Admission is free. Advance reservations are recommended and may be made at my.hnoc.org beginning Thursday, Oct.13, 2022. For more information, visit www.hnoc.org.

The Historic New Orleans Collection
Join us in celebrating the New Orleans debut of "Notre-Dame de Paris: The Augmented Exhibition," an interactive experience that offers a glimpse into the past, present, and future of a landmark that has weathered wars, witnessed Napoleon's coronation, withstood a devastating fire in 2019, and is now undergoing a meticulous restoration to return the structure to its former glory.
Each visitor will be issued a HistoPad as their portal into the past that offers unique insight into the cathedral's historical timeline, plus fun activities for the entire family.
After stunning audiences in Paris, Dubai, and Washington DC, we are excited to be only the second US institution to host the exhibition, which will be on view through March 1 in THNOC's Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street.
Admission is free, with timed-ticketing reservations required. Learn more and reserve tickets: hnoc.org/notre-dame

NATIONAL OATMEAL MUFFIN DAY
Enjoy a delicious breakfast or snack on National Oatmeal Muffin Day. It’s an excellent way to celebrate on December 19th annually.
Known for its health benefits, millions of people start each day with an oatmeal muffin. Oatmeal includes health benefits for our hearts. Finding ways to incorporate it into our diets increases the opportunities to reap those benefits. Oatmeal muffins are another way to enjoy oatmeal.
The American muffin is similar in size and shape to a cupcake. Recipes for oatmeal muffins began to appear in American cookbooks in the mid-1800s. Raisins, bananas, blueberries and other healthy fruits often compliment oatmeal muffins. Add nuts for even more health benefits and texture, too.

December 19th Celebrated History
1843
Chapman & Hall of London publishes the novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The holiday classic continues to be a perennial favorite.
1918
Robert Ripley begins writing his “Believe It or Not” column for the New York Globe.
1973
During his monologue on the Tonight Show, Johnny Carson jokes about shortages. “You know what else is disappearing from the supermarket shelves? Toilet paper! Ha, ha, ha! You can laugh now. There is an acute shortage of toilet paper in the good ol’ United States.” In the days preceding Carson’s monologue, Representative Harold Froehlich (R) of Wisconsin predicted a toilet paper shortage due to paper pulp shortages and pulp exports. But he also predicted shortages of all kinds of paper products. Shortages did materialize and shoppers faced empty shelves from coast to coast. Suppliers and purchasing agents were unable to fill orders.
1980
Raging Bull, starring Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, and Joe Pesci, is released nationally in the United States. Directed by Martin Scorsese the film follows the life of professional boxer Jake LaMotta who held the world middleweight boxing title from 1949-1951. The film won Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Film Editing.
1984
Twenty-three-year-old Wayne Gretzky, playing for the Edmonton Oilers, becomes the youngest and the 18th National Hockey League player to score 1000 points.

We wanted to put up the ticket link for the "DONNA'S REVISITED" show that is taking place at Chickie Wah Wah on Thursday, Dec. 29 from 8-11pm. It's going to be a fun night of music featuring the Leroy Jones Quintet, the swinging band from back in the day when we used to play every Saturday at Donna's Bar & Grill which was on Rampart Street and Saint Ann. There's going to be lots of original music we used to play from the Leroy Jones songbook along with our very swinging arrangements of some great New Orleans music.
Donna's was the place where real and good New Orleans music was played and it was the place where musicians would hang out after or before and sometimes during their gigs. It was the brass band headquarters for many years then Donna and her husband, Charlie, who did all the amazing cooking from that little kitchen in the back, started having bands like Leroy's and Bob French's. It was a very important establishment in the New Orleans music scene for lots of years and it was always very friendly to musicians and the music lovers who hung out there. We all met some incredible people and established some life long
friendships. Lots of bands developed their sound in that small soulful room.
So on Dec. 29 we will be reminicing about Donna's Bar and Grill with music and Free Red Beans ( I would say like Charlie used to do, but he would never share his recipes, but if anybody happens to know his recipe, maybe we could get you to cook them).
The band that played and traveled the world together is Leroy Jones - trumpet, Gerald French - Drums, Mitchell Player - bass, Paul Longstreth - piano, Craig Klein - trombone.
Come get some of this....
$15 presale/$20 at the door. (thats inexpensive prices BTW)

LSU will play Purdue for the first time ever on January 2 in the Citrus Bowl
LSU will cap off coach Brian Kelly’s first season in the Citrus Bowl against the Purdue Boilermakers on Jan. 2.
The game is set for Noon CT in Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida and will mark the third time the Tigers have played in the bowl game since 2016.
After dropping back-to-back games to both Georgia and Texas A&M to end the season, it was inevitable the Tigers’ lofty bowl expectations would diminish, pushing them to a Citrus Bowl berth.

NOLA on Tap Returns
Yeah You Right Events tabbed to bring back Louisiana’s Largest Beer Festival
New Orleans, LA. – NOLA on Tap, the beloved beer festival in support of the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA), will return to the festival calendar in 2023.
Yeah You Right Events, a new partnership between Top Taco and Food Fight producer Shane Finkelstein and restaurateur and Cinco de Mayo Fest producer Oscar Chimal, will take charge of the popular homebrew and craft beer festival. While some changes will be in store for NOLA on Tap, the LASPCA will remain sole beneficiary of the event.
Top Taco and Food Fight have become can’t-miss food festivals in the city. Yeah You Right Events aims to make NOLA on Tap look more like those events while still retaining many of the features that made it one of the largest beer festivals in the country.
Homebrewers will still battle it out for coveted awards and top-notch live musical acts will still grace the stages, but NOLA on Tap will now be a 21 and over ticketed event, and move from City Park on the fall calendar to Lafreniere Park on March 18th, 2023 from 2pm-7pm.
“We really wanted to take NOLA on Tap out of hurricane season,” said event producer Shane Finkelstein. “We love Lafreniere Park for the type of events that we do and its proximity to the city. It really is the perfect venue for medium-sized festivals.”
Other changes will include an all-inclusive ticket package for beer-lovers and a VIP Experience that will include a crawfish boil, open bar, signature beers, lounge seating, private restrooms, and additional food and entertainment.
Early bird tickets will start at $10 for “Designated Drivers” and $35 for unlimited beer samples, while all-inclusive VIP tickets will start at $95 and end up at $125 at the gate.
“We are so excited to have Yeah You Right Events bring back NOLA on Tap,” says CEO of the LASPCA, Ana Zorrilla. “We couldn’t have asked for a better group to bring it back after a 3 year-long hiatus.”
When NOLA on Tap was conceived back in 2009, Abita Brewing was the only brewery in Louisiana. Today, there are over 40 breweries in the state and dozens more around the Gulf Coast. The goal of Yeah You Right Events is to have every local and regional brewery represented at this year’s festival.
“From Gnarly Barley and Urban South to NOLA Brewing Company and Bayou Teche, we now have some of the best breweries in the country right in our backyard,” said Oscar Chimal.
A craft beer competition will be added to NOLA on Tap so festival-goers and celebrity judges can vote for their favorite Pilsners, Lagers, Porters, Sours, and Stouts.
Another feature added to the festival will be the Doggie Drag Show presented by Petcetera. Come out and watch our lovable pups strut their stuff on the runway and sign up to be a foster for those waiting to be adopted.
The goal is to raise $100,000 for the LASPCA so they can continue to do the important work they do in our community.
Tickets will go on sale on December 15th.
