NATIONAL MUTT DAY
National Mutt Day encourages us to embrace, save and celebrate mixed breed dogs twice a year on July 31 and December 2.
Desperately longing for a new home, millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs in shelters wait for someone to come and adopt them. National Mutt Day provides an excellent opportunity to find the perfect canine companion. Despite the name, a mutt learns, obeys and trains much like purebred animals. While their lineage cannot be traced and their features a bit murky, their companionship will be faithful.
According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year. When these abandoned and often abused animals find their way to a shelter, each one needs a forever home. Whether you know it or not, their potential is limitless. Some of the benefits of adoption are often hidden. Human and canine both enjoy increased physical activity.
Another boost is social interaction through daily walks. While humans develop patience, their four-legged companion learns to trust and new limits. For example, as dogs explore the many scents of the human lifestyle, they usually discover shoes are off-limits.
No matter the breed, size or demeanor of the human, er, canine, the shelter will take the time to find the right home for their animals. They schedule visits and have procedures in place to promote healthy adoptions for families and individuals. While some dogs experience injury or illness, the shelters work with veterinarians to heal the animals before making them available for adoption.
Of course, shelters always welcome donations and volunteers. Dogs love walking, playing and being loved even if they haven’t found their forever home. Every moment they spend socializing increases their opportunity for adoption.

With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.

25 Years Later, Madonna's 'Sex' Book Is Still Pop's Most Radical Moment
"Sex" and "Erotica" marked the most daring chapter of the singer's career. Spoiler alert: She survived.
Twenty-five years ago, Madonna put the world in a trance with the release of Sex. Well, she put some of the world in a trance: During its first day in stores, the $50 coffee-table book, which lived up to its carnal title, sold 150,000 copies, and it soon topped The New York Times Best Seller list. Of course, because it was mainstream art promoting libidinous pleasure, a puritanical outcry followed. Many critics, cultural theorists and fans alike found the BDSM-themed photo collection scandalizing, even repulsive. In their eyes, Madonna, who already faced accessions of overexposure following a decade of chart-topping provocations, had crossed the line.
Today, Sex is still the most radical career move a pop star has ever made.
During Madonna’s imperial phase ― the ephemeral period in an artist’s career when everything turns to commercial gold ― she sang about teenage pregnancy, introduced the famous cone bra, burned Christian crosses, simulated masturbation on an arena tour and made a video so prurient that even the youth-centric MTV refused to air it.

As Thanksgiving comes to a close, I am writing a special edition “Sunday Night Highlight” on some reasons I am grateful to be working in economic development in Greater New Orleans at this moment. It has been a long weekend (Family! Turkey! Turducken! Bourbon! Family!), and so this list is extemporaneous, and certainly incomplete. Write me with your additions, and we will compile and post on our website and socials. Most of all, we at GNO, Inc. are thankful for you – the thousands of people at home and abroad who support our mission for a greater New Orleans. 🧡
This Thanksgiving, I am excited and grateful for:
-
Future Energy – Our region and state are poised to lead the nation and world into an “all-of-the-above” balanced, cleaner energy future. The recent billion-dollar announcement of Woodland Biofuels, who will build the worlds-largest carbon-negative gas facility, exemplifies this promise
-
Global Trade – The new $2 billion Louisiana International Terminal, which continues to progress, will ensure New Orleans and Louisiana’s future as a great trade entrepôt, capable of handling some of the largest ships in the world
-
AI – Watch these pages. Louisiana is about to take a leadership role in the next wave of tech, a revolution considered by many to be as great as the printing press
-
Higher Ed – GNO, Inc. finds some of its greatest partnerships in our 13 schools of higher education – second only to Boston, per capita. In fact, the value of our universities is so good that New Orleans was recently named the #1 City in America for College Students and Graduates by Forbes
-
Inclusive Innovation – Greater New Orleans is Top Ten in the USA for women and African Americans in technology jobs, per capita. And with the recent launch of Startup Noir NOLA, GNO, Inc. has created a program to build on this momentum via programs like our HBCU Innovation Internship program
-
Urban Investment - Over $3.5 billion in real estate investments are driving development in the urban core of New Orleans, creating new office, entertainment, and living spaces. For example, the River District, located on the Mississippi River waterfront, will be one of the most exciting new mixed-use neighborhoods in America
-
The Nation’s Investment – In the nearly two decades since the engineering failure of Hurricane Katrina, the United States has invested billions into south Louisiana, recognizing the economic, cultural, and national security importance of our region. These investments, like the $14B Hurricane Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS, aka, the “Great Wall of NOLA”) have radically improved the storm-hardiness of our city and region
-
Quality of Life – With substantial support from the state and Governor Landry, New Orleans continues to enjoy major quality-of-life improvements, including over 550 infrastructure projects underway for Super Bowl LIX. Also, New Orleans is Top Five in the nation for decline in violent crime, with homicides and carjackings down nearly 50% and 70% versus 2022
-
Super Bowl LIX – Did someone say, “Super Bowl?” Yeah You Right! In ten weeks, New Orleans will host a record-tying 11th Super Bowl, which will be seen by up to 200 million people around the world. The Super Bowl will be an unmatched opportunity to showcase why New Orleans is “Built to Host,” including the “miraculous” renovation of the iconic Super Dome, per NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell
-
The Suis Generis City – All of us who live in the New Orleans region have experienced it: You are traveling, someone asks where you are from, and their eyes light up: “Oh, I LOVE New Orleans!” And then the stories follow. This is why New Orleans continues to be named one of the truly unique and most desirable cities in the world

The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans-based sextet that specializes in ‘jump’, the jazz-based rhythm and blues that bridged the gap between swing and rock & roll. To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,December 2
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL FRITTERS DAY
National Fritters Day on December 2nd allows for no frittering away of the time. So make haste and get them while they are hot!
Fritters come in various forms, from morsels dipped in flavorful batters to bits of dough stuffed or filled with delicious surprises. All of the varieties are deep-fried and served hot with dips, drips, or dustings of seasonings, sweets, or sauces. Cultures all over the world make some kind of fritter. May believe Ancient Romans first consumed fritters. They then introduced them to Europe. Most commonly filled with fruit or cheese, fritters can also be filled with savory meats, seafood, and vegetables.

What does "lagniappe" mean?
Sleep
Gift
Person who smells bad
Eccentricity
lagniappe Pronunciation: lan-yap
Definition: a small gift or bonus given to a customer as a token of appreciation or goodwill, especially in the context of a purchase or business transaction.
Origin: The word "lagniappe" originates from Louisiana French, derived from the Spanish phrase "la yapa," meaning "the addition" or "the extra."
Example: After purchasing a new phone, the store manager surprised the customer with a lagniappe, offering a free phone case as a gesture of appreciation.
A gift is indeed the essence of what "lagniappe" means. It represents an additional item or bonus given to a customer beyond what they expected. This practice is often employed by businesses as a way to enhance customer satisfaction, loyalty, and to create a positive shopping experience. By giving a small gift, a company acknowledges the customer's importance and adds an element of surprise and delight to the transaction, fostering a stronger relationship between the customer and the business.

When the kids were all fed
And after draining the bath water
We would all climb into my dad’s car
And head down to the French Quarter
My parents enjoyed all the excitement
After working long days
We’d head down to Morning Call
For chocolate milk and beignets
Morning Call. Morning Call
Chocolate milk and beignets
Served with lots of powdered sugar
Made life better in so many ways
If you grew up in New Orleans
Car service was the way to go
They hooked a tray to your car window
To serve your beignets, don’t you know
It was a big family tradition
Always part of our celebrations
My parents did it when they were kids
A tradition going back for generations
Morning Call. Morning Call
Chocolate milk and beignets
Served with lots of powdered sugar
Made life better in so many ways
Each of us got an order
Three beignets, never four
Even though we were full
It seemed we always wanted more
We dipped our fingers in the water
To clean the sugar off our hands
When it came to eating beignets
We were Morning Call’s biggest fans
Morning Call. Morning Call
Made life better in so many ways
Our nightly dreams always included
Chocolate milk and beignets

⚜️⚜️1880: West End Fountain
One of a series of stereographic photographs produced by George Francois Mugnier and issued by the Rowles Stereograph Company, this one showing the three-tiered fountain at the resort area of West End. The New Basin Canal is barely visible in the right background as well as the arched entrance to the property. The building in the left background is the soda and ice cream pavilion and the West End Opera House. The perspective is looking toward Lake Pontchartrain.
| |
1955: Bucktown
Photographer William Russell captured the essence of old Bucktown in this 1955 image of a row of houses built out over the water. In fact, this is just how the small community began back in the middle of the 19th century. In 1853, the Jefferson and Lake Pontchartrain Railroad opened, connecting the area to New Orleans and boosting economic activity. This led to the construction of more camps and docks along the lakefront and the 17th Street Canal.
Bucktown became known for its fishing industry, with residents building boats, making nets, trapping crabs year-round, and hauling in shrimp in the spring and summer. The area also had seafood processing plants and was a hub for hunting ducks and deer in the winter. The Prohibition era was a significant time for Bucktown, with speakeasies, gambling parlors, and dance halls attracting visitors from New Orleans. The area was known for its lively atmosphere and was even captured in songs like "Bucktown Bounce" by Johnny Wiggs and "Bucktown Blues" by Jelly Roll Morton.

Every autumn the Louisiana Renaissance Festival creates the English village of Albright, with more than 600 artisans, entertainers, and educational demonstrations welcoming you to the best parts of the 16th century: fun, clean, safe, and educational.

New Orleans holiday parade 2024 will fill the streets with hot-air balloons. See the details.
Children's Hospital sponsors this procession, featuring Frosty, Rudolph and more.

For the third year, the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will get the yuletide season rolling, Crescent City style. With 30 themed floats, ridden by costumers tossing a blizzard of throws, plus 27 bands and marching groups, the parade is like a preview of Carnival. But there’s a difference.
No other New Orleans procession includes giant lighter-than-air balloons, bobbing along the route amid the other attractions. In the past two years, a 40-foot Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, a gargantuan candy cane, a snowflake, a gingerbread man, a Hanukkah ornament and Frosty the Snowman have floated over the crowds.
This year, parade producer Barry Kern promises there will be a few new balloons in the mix. In addition to floats bearing a red toy train, a Christmas alligator and Santa on his sled, Kern said parade-goers should look for giant self-propelled snow globes this year.
The parade rolls through the French Quarter and the Central Business District at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7.
Patients at Children’s Hospital are creating custom-decorated plastic ornaments that will serve as signature throws this year. Each ornament will be marked with the patient’s name.
Rolling fundraiser
Unlike the Mardi Gras season, during which commercial advertising is prohibited, the floats in the holiday parade are sponsored by businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the commercial tie-ins benefit Children’s Hospital. WDSU television plans a telethon-style broadcast to accompany the event.
With support from the state’s Explore Louisiana tourism campaign, the parade is meant to help promote New Orleans as a holiday season destination, according to parade organizers.
Grinchy power lines and rain
The first two Children’s Hospital Holiday Parades succeeded despite complications. During the first parade, the hovering balloons were forced to limbo beneath streetcar power lines on St. Charles Avenue, slowing the procession. The problem led to a new route in the second year. Rain pelted the 2023 parade, though the event still drew crowds.
Unlike in past years, there will be no post-parade party in Lafayette Square.
The parade will line up on Elysian Fields Avenue near Washington Square Park. It will proceed uptown on North Peters Street, merge onto Decatur Street, turn right on Canal Street, U-turn at Burgundy Street, turn right on Tchoupitoulas Street, ending at Andrew Higgins Drive.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians
The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.
Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.
Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.
And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
