BATHTUB PARTY DAY

Bathtub Party Day encourages us all to skip the ordinary shower and linger in the tub instead. On December 5th, add some suds to the tub and pamper yourself.

A bathtub party sounds suspiciously like a crowded affair, but it doesn't have to be. Granted, if you have young children, it's a time saver to plunk two or three of them in the tub at once. Getting them all suds up and playing with the water toys are some of the more memorable times raising children. It also saves water while everyone has some good clean fun.

For the adults, the benefits of a quiet soak in the tub add up quickly.

  • A steamy bath during cold and flu season helps to clear our sinuses and improve our oxygen intake. It also increases our circulation.
  • The warm water reduces inflammation, easing achy joints and sore muscles. It also helps relieve stress.
  • Dropping temperatures outside mean cold hands and feet, or just a chilled body in general. A soak in a warm tub warms us right up.
  • Our skin loves the steam from the bath, but be sure to moisturize, too. Add bath oil to your bathwater to gain the most benefit from your Bathtub Party.

Enjoy all the benefits of a Bathtub Party and celebrate with bubbles of all kinds!

NATIONAL REPEAL DAY

On December 5th, National Repeal Day commemorates the day Prohibition ended in the United States.

Prohibition grew out a practice of moderation rooted in the Protestant churches in America. By the 1830s, consumption of alcohol, especially hard spirits, was affecting the nation. Most participants were male. Those who supported who joined the Temperance movement saw alcohol as the root of all evil. The movement took hold at a time when women had few rights, and the country was debating slavery. Ethics and mores were changing. The Temperance movement shifted the view on alcohol use from moderation to eradication.

The following decades would see organizations such as the Prohibition Party, Women's Christian Temperance Union, and Anti-Saloon League formed. By 1838, Tennessee would pass the first legislation prohibiting the sale of alcohol. Some new states would enter the union as dry states. In 1919, the 18th Amendment was ratified, banning the production, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages. However, the legislation did not prohibit the consumption of such drinks.

The Amendment went into effect in 1920, and numerous businesses closed. Beyond the loss of brewers and bars, governments lost tax revenues. Additionally, the cost of enforcing prohibition was expensive. Those determined to produce, transport, and sell alcohol created a black market that crisscrossed the nation. Their illicit methods became notorious and the stuff of legend. In 1929, the stock market crashed.

During the years of Prohibition, use of the term "gangster" increased. The term "moonshine" reached its peak usage.

Prohibition's "great experiment" was a significant failure. The term "bootlegger" would reach its peak usage as Prohibition neared the end of its lifespan. Congress proposed the 21st Amendment to the Constitution on February 20, 1933. The amendment repealed the 18th Amendment and was ratified on December 5 that year.

An exhibit of original works by Art Deco icon Erté will include almost 170 items as well as other period pieces that characterized the movement of style and design.

"Erté and the Era of Art Deco" will remain open through Jan. 3, 2024.

Often called "the father of Art Deco," Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, was the central figure of the art and design evolution that emerged during the 1920s. The look featured stylized forms, geometric patterns, vibrant colors and sleek lines. Its influence flooded the world of art, fashion, architecture, furniture design, serviceware and more.

The Rau exhibit includes a large collection of the artist's original gouache paintings, used to create designs for fashion shows, clubs and stage performances.

During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.

Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.

Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.

“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.

This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.

The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.

The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks

Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour

New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.

“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”

Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.

Highlights this year include:

2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays

Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included

Multiple dedicated Bike Nights

Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”

Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate

Holiday-themed Storyland

Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship

New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland

“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”

City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.

WICKED, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” WICKED has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” Time Magazine cheers, “if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED—the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. It will send your spirits soaring to heights you’ll never forget.

NATIONAL SACHER TORTE DAY

If you like chocolate and you like cake, then National Sacher Torte Day on December 5th is a perfect day for you! The layered ingredients make this dessert a delicious torte!

Sacher Torte, also known as Sachertorte, is a unique type of chocolate cake. Austrian Franz Sacher invented it in 1832. Vienna considers the Sachertorte one of their most famous culinary specialties.

At the age of 16, Franz Sacher was only an apprentice to the chef when Prince Wenzel Von Metternich ordered a special dessert from the kitchen for his guests. With the chef ill, Sacher stepped in for his superior and created what is known worldwide as the Sacher Torte.

His son, Eduard, went on to perfect this decadent dessert. He created the Sacher Torte by layering apricot jam between a rich, chocolate sponge cake and topped it with a layer of chocolate icing.

The original recipe is a secret protected today and served exclusively by the Sacher Hotels in Vienna and Salzburg.

Cake vs. Torte

Cakes and tortes are very similar. In fact, tortes are a type of cake. It is the ingredients that make a torte a torte. Like the ingredients that make an angel food cake bake up light and tall, a torte's ingredients give it a heavier base and a tighter crumb. Additionally, tortes tend to be layered crosswise with ganache, frosting, or fruit. Tortes use very little flour and use ground nuts or breadcrumbs instead.

There are various tortes to make. Some tortes only have a couple of layers. However, others stack up thin, beautiful layers full of rich flavor.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."

The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.

“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”

“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”

Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb.  Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.

“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."

“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

MARKETS THIS WEEK:

On the first Wednesday of the month from August through December 2023,

Orleans Parish residents with one proof of residency

will get free admission with up to four guests to Audubon Aquarium.

We hope you can join us in shaping the future of City Park!

The second public meeting for the City Park Master Planning process will be held this Wednesday, December 6 at Warren Easton Charter High School from 5:30-7:30pm. At this meeting, the results from the first survey will be shared and the Project Team will be looking for public feedback on potential improvements to how visitors get to City Park (Access) and how they move through the Park safely (Circulation).

These improvements could include adjustments to roadways, bike lanes, and pedestrian paths, as well as to the connectivity of the north and south sides of City Park.

The format for this meeting will be “Open House” style – allowing guests to arrive at any time and come and go as they please. The Project Team will facilitate six stations that cover different topics and enable multiple opportunities for discussion and feedback, including:

  1. Online Survey #1 Results: Results and key takeaways from our first survey through infographics.
  2. Improve Access to the Park: Understanding how visitors currently get to the Park (driving, public transit, biking, walking) and will highlight initial opportunities to improve access.
  3. Make Safe Ways for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Analyzing the existing circulation network (roads, bike paths, and pedestrian paths) in the most historic areas of the Park south of I-610, creating safer biking and pedestrian experiences as well as a more efficient and intuitive roadway system.
  4. Create New Visitor Experiences: Introduce improvements to the visitor’s arrival experience and a new promenade that will prioritize wayfinding, comfort, and safety for visitors.
  5. Create New Park Connections: Existing circulation networks (roads, bike paths, and pedestrian paths) within the Park and introduce three different schemes that rethink the circulation networks to expand engagement with the Park’s landscapes.
  6. The Wooded Island: Introduce the “Wooded Island” which, as proposed in the original 1933 Master Plan, was a central destination for City Park surrounded by the waters of the Bayou. It is currently a challenge to access, but it could provide an immersive experience of native Louisiana landscapes that would only otherwise be experienced outside of the city.

It is the second in a series of six public meetings. For more information and details on what will be presented, click here.

DELFEAYO MARSALIS

& The Uptown Jazz Orchestra

EVERY WEDNESDAY in DECEMBER!

That's right!  After nearly 4 years, Delfeayo and the Big Band return home to Wednesdays at Snug Harbor!

Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers, and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…” (Los Angeles Times), he is “…one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” (San Francisco Examiner).

Early influences on Delfeayo's style include J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, Tyree Glenn, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington’s trombone masters. From the age of 17 until the present, he has produced over 100 recordings for major artists, including Harry Connick Jr, Spike Lee, Terence Blanchard, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and his father and brothers.

In January 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton, and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, thus dubbing them

"America's First Family of Jazz."

On packing a full jazz orchestra into a tiny historic jazz club: "Whatever you have to do," the trombonist says philosophically. But when the band plays the swing and bebop hits from the 1930s through the 1960s, the music is just as tight. From Mardi Gras music to modern jazz, this band does it all.

An intimate experience like no other!

“In an increasingly globalized world, it seems we are all looking for something authentic and different. That’s what the wines of Portugal can offer.” These were the opening words of Dirceu Vianna Junior, Master of Wine, as he addressed the audience at his masterclass at the Wines of Portugal tasting in September. And he’s not wrong.

Portugal is not a large country, but its selection of native grapes, planted across its plethora of soils and structures, and under incredibly distinct micro-climates, continues to offer new ideas and tastes every vintage. One of the most successful aspects of the rise of Portuguese wines is that producers are embracing the native grapes up and down the country. Wines of Portugal recognizes over 250 native varieties, with research into clonal selection producing a vast number of permutations available to growers.

An explosion of international interest has transformed Portugal over the past 10 years. It was voted the “Best Tourist Destination in Europe” for the fifth time in a row in the World Travel Awards 2022 and has become a paradise for freelancing nomads and tech entrepreneurs. It is also a melting pot of winemaker and culinary talent, where pioneers are expanding the boundaries of Portuguese wine and food, reviving ancestral techniques while finding new ways to express the diversity of unique regional terroirs; from the mountainous Douro, Trás-os-Montes and Dão to the wild Atlantic Bairrada, Lisbon and Azores.

Going hand in hand with this international interest is a vinicultural revival where younger winemakers are taking charge of their families’ estates or bringing their own independent projects to fruition. A new generation is making wine unlike the Portuguese table wine we’ve come to know, particularly in the Douro Valley, the oldest demarcated appellation in Western Europe. The Salazar dictatorship (1930's to late 1960's) had a heavy influence on the country’s wine industry, by monopolizing legislation that benefited co-ops over individual producers. This led to a drop in quality, until the 1980s, when Portugal joined the E.U. and small producers received subsidies and grants to improve their vineyards and winemaking facilities. Today, Portuguese winemaking is in its prime and the wines are ascending to new heights with subtle, savory and mineral-driven high-quality wines. WHAT NOW? Julia and Emily Save Christmas!

What Now? is a comedy show celebrating the darkness the dysfunction the mania in all of us. It’s about sitting in the shit and still finding laughter and levity.

Comedians Julia DeLois (Reductress The Air Sex Championships) and Emily Slazer (Edinburgh Improv Festival San Francisco Sketchfest) are back with their quarterly show that audiences have described as “like being at the funnest sleepover ever with all your best friends.”

Each show is an ALL NEW ALL UNHINGED hour of scenes sketches and interactive segments. This installment WHAT NOW? Julia and Emily Save Christmas! is a downward spiral into holiday hysteria and the mania that only December can deliver.

What Now? is built around audience connection so we can’t do it without you. But don't worry - no terrifying or hacky audience participation required. You're free to be a part of the show as much or as little as you like - but we promise you'll have more fun if you are.

See you there future besties. ❤

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”

The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.

Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

We're happy to bring a piece of the past back to WYES starting this weekend. GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS, the vintage TV series that began WYES’ legacy of award-winning nationally broadcast cooking shows, returns to the station – 40 years after its debut. Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.

Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. It begins Saturday in the kitchen of the legendary Chef Warren Leruth, and you'll see many other local icons below in the weeks to come. For all the episodes, the distinctive voices of Mary Lou Conroy and Andres Calandria narrate, with original music from the Charlie Byrd Trio, the Dukes of Dixieland and Banu Gibson. 7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

JACKSONVILLE STATE GAMECOCKS AND LOUISIANA RAGIN' CAJUNS ACCEPT INVITATIONS TO 2023 R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns accepted invitations today to compete in the 23rd Annual R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Saturday, December 16 at the Caesars Superdome. The game will kick off at 1:15 p.m. CST and will air on ESPN and ESPN Radio.

“On behalf of the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Committee and staff, it is a pleasure to host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in New Orleans for this year’s game,” said R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Chairman Sheriff Paul Valteau. “We look forward to an exciting game and a week full of celebrations for these outstanding programs.”

Jacksonville State finished its final year of transition to FBS with an 8-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in Conference USA play. This will be the Gamecocks’ first bowl appearance in program history.

“We are excited to be headed to New Orleans to represent Jax State in its first ever bowl game,” Head Coach Rich Rodriguez said. “I’m happy for our team, especially our seniors, for earning this opportunity in our first season in FBS. It will be a great week and experience for our players, staff and fans.”

Jacksonville State is one of only eight teams since 1970 to win at least eight games in its first season playing an FBS schedule. The Gamecocks finished third in Conference USA, falling to New Mexico State (10-4, 7-1) and Liberty (13-0, 8-0), who met in the CUSA championship game on Friday.

Under Head Coach Rich Rodriguez, the Gamecocks ranked second in CUSA in rushing, averaging 232.2 yards per game. Redshirt senior running back Malik Jackson ranks second in the league in rushing yards per game, and his 6.4 yards per carry was best in the conference.

Jacksonville State averaged 29.8 points per game, tied for third-best in the conference.

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns concluded the regular season with a 6-6 overall record and 3-5 in the Sun Belt, making them bowl eligible for the sixth straight year, a record for the program.

“We are excited to make the trip to New Orleans and play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl,” Head Coach Michael Desormeaux said. “The New Orleans Bowl Committee puts on a great event for our student-athletes, and we are looking forward to playing a great opponent in Jacksonville State.”

Louisiana’s rushing attack is also formidable, averaging 182.7 yards per game, second-best in the Sun Belt. The Cajuns’ 32.3 points per game ranks fourth in the league. The Cajuns are outstanding on special teams, with coverage units that lead the SBC in kick return and punt return yardage allowed.

Louisiana will make its record seventh R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl appearance. Its five wins are the most in the game’s history.

Exciting news from the Office of Lt. Governor and the Office of Tourism! We're thrilled to announce the stunning new design for our float as we gear up for our 3rd year in the 2024 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language." Our float features a larger-than-life Mardi Gras jester, fleur de lis, second-line inspired umbrellas, and lots of purple, green, and gold.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Professor Carl Nivale

Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!

#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique

https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...

A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.

Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.

What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.

  • This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
  • The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.

What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
