"The Role Model Awards are a testament to the power of leadership and community impact. During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.

Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.

Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.

“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.

This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.

The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.

The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks

Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour

New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.

“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”

Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.

City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

Lafreniere Park

Lafreniere Park sparkles for the holidays with millions of twinkling lights and displays! Constructed with over 10 million LED lights, this holiday favorite features elaborate decorations, artificial snow, and festive light displays that illuminate Lafreniere Park, while adults and kids alike can watch for appearances by Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, Grinch, and Elf.

At Santa’s Express Mail Center, children are able to view Santa’s elves building toys for all the good little girls and boys. Attendees can also enjoy an interactive walking tour set to random scenes from their favorite holiday classics. Children can write a letter to Santa and mail it to him at the Elf Post Office. 

The 37th Annual Christmas in the Park will be held nightly at Lafreniere Park beginning on Friday, Dec. 1, 2021, and ending on Friday, Dec. 30, 2023.

Park Admissions & Entrances

The admission charge per vehicle is $10 in advance or $15 at the gate of the park

Credit and debit cards only. No cash will be taken at the gate. Tickets can be purchased online at https://lafrenierepark.org.

Additionally, the carousel will be open to the public every night till 9pm.

All vehicles must enter from West Napoleon Avenue and exit at Downs Boulevard. Upon entering the park, traffic will flow counterclockwise around the park. The Downs Boulevard Park entrance will close daily at 5:00 pm. The West Napoleon Avenue gate will close at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday – Thursday and 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

Lafreniere Park will be closed on Christmas Day, Saturday, Dec. 25th, and will reopen on Sunday, Dec. 26th.

Join us to build the city of Jerusalem using LEGOs, on Monday, December 4 from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Parish (St. Joan of Arc Church) in the New Orleans Riverbend.

A light snack will be provided at 4:30 p.m. before participants embark on the LEGO build from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Participants are asked to wear socks, as shoes will not be allowed during the build.

We'll close with latkes and sufganiyot in celebration of Chanukah.

Tweens, teens, adults and siblings are welcome to help us build Jerusalem during this special event.

The festivities kick off with a dazzling ceremony to illuminate the more than 2,000 lights, casting a magical glow over the Holiday of Lights event. On December 1 at 6 p.m., the Holiday of Lights Parade will take center stage on Koop Drive, lighting up the night and filling the air with holiday spirit. And guess who'll be in the parade?

• Santa Claus: Yes, the man in red himself, Santa Claus, will be making a grand entrance to join the festivities. After all, it's not a holiday celebration without Santa!
• Parish President Mike Cooper: Parish President Mike Cooper will be there to officially turn on the lights at the water tower and spread the joy and excitement of the season.
• Abita Springs Children’s Academie: These little stars will be shining brightly in the parade, adding an extra touch of holiday magic.
• Louisiana Ladies Dance Team: Get ready to be wowed by the grace and talent of the Louisiana Ladies Dance Team as they dance their way into your hearts.
• Be Hooper Be Happy Hula Hoopers: These hula hoopers are not your average hoopers; they glow in the dark, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
• St. Tammany Parish Fire District 12: Our local heroes from Fire District 12 will be there, big red fire engine and all!
• Adorable Dogs from St. Tammany Parish's Animal Services Shelter: Prepare for some heartwarming moments as these lovable dogs join the parade. Some of them are dressed as reindeer and some looking for their forever homes, making this parade extra special.

The New Orleans Pelicans are advancing to the In-Season Tournament knockout round.

On Tuesday, the Houston Rockets lost to the Dallas Mavericks. That ensured the Pelicans finished in first place in Western Conference Group B.

The Pelicans, who ended In-Season Tournament group play with a 3-1 record, will face the Sacramento Kings in California on Monday. The do-or-die game will tip off at 9 p.m., and it will be broadcast on TNT.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands 

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp. 

"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."

The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.  

“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.” 

“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”  

Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb.  Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.  

“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."

“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

Christkindmarkts are German street markets associated with the celebration of Christmas during the 4 weeks of Advent. As you travel from German city to German city you will find Christmas markets being held in town squares. Each town will have different themes and different colored mugs, which are a coveted treasure.

The markets sell food, drinks and seasonal items from open-air stalls accompanied by traditional singing and dancing. We (OMBA) hope that the “Sips of The Season” Stroll mugs will be a coveted treasure from your Christmas Past experience in our beautiful Historic Old Mandeville town.

As of 11/28 ALL purchased mugs must be picked up on the day of the event at Monroe and Girod Street from 4-9pm!

The Harry Potter Yule Festival

METAIRIE, LA – The Harry Potter Yule Festival, a program for kids, teens and adults that combines the best of the holidays with a well-loved story, will occur from 12 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public.

Harry Potter is a series of fantasy novels written by J. K. Rowling. The novels chronicle the life of a young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main story arc concerns Harry's struggle against Lord Voldemort.

Library patrons who have no knowledge of the Harry Potter or the wizarding world will feel comfortable with the various festivities planned.

The Harry Potter Yule Festival will consist of the following events.

·         Professional face painting and balloon animals.

·         Trivia, games, and a scavenger hunt.

·         Sweet treats from the Treat Trolley.

 Join us on a short train ride in our open-air gondola or caboose pulled by one of our historic diesel locomotives from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM

 Check out our historic 100 + year-old steam locomotive, SP 745 and our other rail equipment dating back to the early 1900s. You can also learn about rail safety with the Operation Lifesaver team.

 Food, drinks and merchandise are available from several local vendors. The LASTA gift shop will have 745 Shirts, Hats and holiday treasures!

No ticket pre-sales! Proceeds go toward rebuilding and maintaining SP 745, the lone surviving Louisiana-built steam locomotive!

A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.

Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.

What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.

• This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
• The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.

What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.

Harmony Street Society To Host Free Tax Workshops For Local Musicians

The Harmony Street Society will once again offer free workshops this fall and winter to assist musicians in the New Orleans area with their tax-related matters. These workshops provide valuable insights into navigating the often complex world of taxes, ensuring musicians stay tax-compliant and informed.

The details of the workshops are as follows:

Workshop 3 – How to Prepare Your 2023 Tax Return – January 17, 2024

• A step-by-step walkthrough of preparing your 2023 tax return using your phone.

Workshop 4 – How to Prepare Your 2023 Tax Return – January 31, 2024

• A repeat of Workshop 3, with additional tips for handling missing documents.

These Harmony Street Society workshops provide an excellent opportunity for musicians in the New Orleans area to gain essential knowledge and guidance on tax-related matters. 

ALL WORKSHOPS HELD IN PERSON AT THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ MUSEUM. All workshops are free to attend, and those interested should register with [email protected]. For those unable to attend in person, the workshops will also be available for viewing on Zoom, and the Zoom link can be obtained by contacting that same email.

The Rolling Stones are coming to Jazz Fest

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Rolling Stones are headed to Jazz Fest!

Officials with the New Orleans Jazz &Heritage Foundation announced Tuesday, Nov. 21 that the group will headline the 2024 festival.

Their only festival appearance is set for May 2 as a part of their Stone Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds.

“‘The Rolling Stones at Jazz Fest’ is a long-held prophecy coming true. The Festival thanks Mick, Keith, Ronnie, and Concerts West, for their steadfast dedication to making this once-in-a-lifetime Jazz Fest magic. The pilgrimage starts today, come get satisfied,” said Quint Davis, Producer/Director of Jazz Fest.
